Hi, I have a partition in which I defined the permissions incorrectly. I have defined some kind of read permissions for the administrator, and now I can't access the partition. It says "<Drive>: is not accessible". Does anyone know how to reset ntfs permissions for a directory? Would really appreciate some help on this. Thanks

Even after one successful logon, they shutdown their PC and start and can successfully logon. Strange 137GB problem on Windows 2000
by Guest Erik- 4 replies

Hey there, I have a windows 2000 advanced server computer running with 2 drives in it, one (the one smaller then 137GB as a boot disk with windows installed on it, the second one is bigger then 137 GB (200GB). It's an old computer so the BIOS doesn't support a 48-bit LBA and there aren't BIOS upgrades that do support it. So I bought a IDE/SATA raid controller with a PCI slot, after I connected the drive the windows 2000 advanced server installation cd (including SP4) could easilly recognize the disk at full size so I formatted it into 1 partition. After creating the registry key 'EnableBigLba' all worked fine and windows could recognize the big HDD.…

I have a 500GB Iomega USB Drive with about 60GB of files. It is formatted in FAT32. Have heard that NTFS gives better performance, so I am considering using the DOS command convert to switch. Question 1) if I do so, will I lose the files? 2) is it worth it?

Hello, My father's old Dell Optiplex GX260 with Windows 2000 SP4 (all updates) gave an "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE" error. It happened right after the loading graph reached "C" in "Corporation". I had to use a non-Dell 2000 (I don't think it is slipstreamed with a SP) CD and go to its recovery console (not repair install) and do a repair. After it was done, it said it finished repairing some issues (didn't specify what type of issues). Machine was rebooted automatically and Windows 2000 SP4 booted up fine. I did not see any problems after that. I checked the event logs and didn't see anything about the issues I ran into earlier. I did notice the OS was…

Any utilities that I can use to 'only' affect users home folders (even if this means I move all users home folders to one area). Thanks,

How do I temporarily disable a domain controller (without turning it off!)
by Guest KingCronos- 4 replies
We have two web servers in an offsite location. One is a domain controller that is used by the web services on both boxes. I hope to install a new seperate DC, and to test that web services can use that, I want to disable the box that doubles as a web server and DC. Obviously, as it is hosting websites, I do not want to switch it off. Is there an easy way of doing this? Thanks, KC

ALT+TAB mini window won't go away
by Guest A win2k user- 4 replies

There are certain circumstances which I don't yet know how to duplicate, that reult in the mini-window for the task switcher staying on screen, and staying on top. Task switching then still works, but the mini window will not go away. The only clean workaround is to reboot. How can I make the mini window go away? Or kill the mini window process? -- It will be interesting to see how long the meek keep the earth after they inherit it.

event viewer (application) not recording anything
by Guest jbclem- 4 replies
I'm trying to figure out why my computer is locking up occasionally and I was hoping to spot some error in the Event Viewer (application). In the past there has always been a long list of application events. Now there is nothing there, even after I refresh it. Looking at the Event Viewer (system) there is also nothing showing, but when I refresh it the listings show up like they should. Could there be a corruption in the Event Viewer system, and how could I fix this if it is. John

Where should I post my question?
by Guest Clueless in Seattle- 4 replies

A few days ago I posted a question that has so far garnered no responses. So I'm wondering if there might not be a more appropriate group for my question. I'd be grateful for any and all suggestions on where I could post. Here's the question: "Can I filter items in Start Menu Documents list?" "November 29" "The Documents list on the Windows 2000 Start Menu is quite a handy way to access the files I use often. But the problem is that when I play MP3s, each MP3 ends up on that list, and soon the MP3s have crowded out all of my useful files. "Is there a way I can tell Windows to ignore my music files when I play them and to not add them to the Docume…

I have a problem when trying to add a local user to a local group using "Computer Managment" tool on a Windows 2000 Server. First off: The existing group memberships are not displayed. Second: After hitting the Add... button an error message pops up and tells me "An error occurred attempting to create the Object Picker". Third: When trying to delete a local user, an error message pops up saying "An error occurred while attempting to delete a user: An invalid Active Directory pathname was passed" Has anybody had this problem? What can I do (besides reinstall)?

Anonymous access to Share
by Guest Doc- 4 replies

We have a Windows AD 2003 domain with a share on a Windows 2000 SP4 server that needs to be accessed by XP machines that are not part of the AD domain. If I set the share to Everyone/Full Control, the XP machine gets access. However, if I attempt to tighten-up the security by removing Everyone/FC, I cannot gain access to the share. I have looked at giving the Anonymous user permission but cannot get this to work even hough I think this is the way to go. Guest account is disabled. Can anyone point me in the right direction on this ?

Taskbar - how to move?
by Guest Blithe- 4 replies
W2K Help says - to move the taskbar: Click an empty area on the taskbar, and then drag the taskbar to a different location on the desktop. However - that never works for me. I prefer it at the bottom of the desktop but it jumps on occasion to the right side where I cannot drag it back. How do I get it back and lock it? (In the past, it jumps back to the bottom at random. Only once or twice I can recall that it will drag back but maybe that occurs about one out of 100 frustrating attempts - so I just live with it) Thanks - Blithe

Trouble installing 16-bit ms-dos applications in Windows 2000 Pro
by Guest flamejob- 4 replies

Microsoft's Help and Support website states that some 16-bit applications may install and set-up successfully on some Windows 2000 equipped computers, but not on others. I followed the instructions re: clearing the "hidden" attributes on both "autoexec" and "config.sys", which is supposed to allow the changes necessary to load these applications, but I am still having problems. The pop-up message I receive reads: "16-bit Windows subsystem" - "c:\winnt\system32\autoexec.nt" - The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft applications. Choose 'close' to terminate this application." The software manufacturer has tried to help but they …

Cannot copy file_name: Access is Denied
by Guest MadDog- 4 replies

I have a user that tries copying files into a shared folder and she gets: "Cannot copy <file_name): Access is Denied. Make sure that the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use." I've tried taking ownership, which allows ME to move the files. I give her ownership and she still can't complete the above task. The disk is not full or write protected and the user has the appropriate share/ntfs perms. Any suggestions?

Interrupts Time Placeholder very high %cpu usage
by Guest jbclem- 4 replies

Once or twice a day my cursor will become catatonic...I will move it and 15 seconds later the little arrow will move. This will go one for five minutes or so then things will go back to normal. The only clue I have is that I've noticed (using TaskInfo) that when this happens the Interrupts Time Placeholder will be using up to 95% of the cpu%. This may also be related to the 1-3 times a day lock up I'm getting...I'll be moving the cursor/mouse and either in mid movement or as I start to click on an icon or menu item...the cursor will freeze in place. I've waited for an hour and more to see if the computer will unlock but it never happens, I always have to reb…
