by Guest Tony- 4 replies

For backing up my data files, I see lots of 3rd party software to do backups. Is there anything wrong with the backup program that I see up under System Tools that comes with Windows 2000? Can anyone tell me if there are any limitations about this program? Tony

Hard Drive Running Constantly - Win2K-Pro
by Guest Gordon- 4 replies
This is a new (clean) installation and it seems as if the hard drive is running all the time. I checked the Windows Task Manager and there is one process, svchost.exe running in multiple instances and has a high CPU usage at times. I checked Google and this appears to be a common problem (I hope) but I am not clear about the solution. Is there a solution for this? Thank you Gordon

W2K fails to properly distinguish between Permanently Delete and Sendto Recycle Bin.
by Guest baobob@my-deja.com- 4 replies

I just upgraded from Win 98 to Win 2000 SP4, and I continue to be absolutely sickened at the lack of attention to vital detail in the UI. In File Explorer, on highlighting a file and pressing Del, it asks whether you want to send the file to the Recycle Bin. Fine. Perfect. But on pressing Shift-Del, it asks whether you want to DELETE the file. Everyone KNOWS that Windows has the virtue of saving things for you in case you accidentally DELETE something. Everyone KNOWS that "delete" means merely to send to the Recycle Bin. The phrase they're looking for, PERMANENTLY DELETE, is abandoned, thrown out, not in the picture. Do more recent versions of Window…

MS-Config
by Guest Roger Fink- 4 replies

I just unchecked a few items under the "Startup" and "Services" tabs of MS-config. Now, whenever I open it, whether I make a change or not, I get a message after closing (unless I close by selecting "cancel") that I have to reboot for the changes I made to System Configuration to take effect. I also get a message after I reboot (or log off and log on) informing me that I have made changes to the system configuration and to check the box if I don't want the configuration utility to launch on reboot or see this message again (these messages would be normal if I had made changes). The items I unchecked in Startup were related to nVidia features and also mobsync…

Problems with installing win2000 server on new Dell
by Guest bill allemann- 4 replies
I had an unused win2000 server package so I wanted to save some $ and use it for a low-tech server. I bought a new Dell SC440 and it comes with a "Server Assistant" software package on the install CD. I used the software to config a mirror RAID configuration with the 2 identical SATA hard drives. The BIOS boot screen shows one drive now, and displays a Ctrl-C prompt to access the RAID config. I created a C drive of about 5gb and left the remainder in an unformatted partition for now. The Server Assistant software will only install Win2003 as an OS, so I needed to do the usual setup with the Win2k CD. I downloaded a driver file for the SAS 5i/R RAID co…

How to stop connections to Microsoft
by Guest AndyHancock- 4 replies

I disabled the automatic updates because it was setting off the firewall too often (I haven't found enough details to make the proper firewall rules). There are still attempts to connect to microsoft IP addresses. What else can be causing these connection attempts? I don't use instant messaging, my browser is firefox, and thunderbird is my email/usenet reader. Thanks.

Can't upgrade 2000sp2 to sp4
by Guest muzikhed- 4 replies

I had a W2k sp4 OS which crashed - failed to boot after attempting to fix Adobe program. With help from Dell I've wiped the c: clean & reformatted. I had much trouble getting it to boot at all. Would not complete the Win2K setup from CDrom. Finally I partitioned my Heardisk0 into 2 virtual drives: C: and H: and I set H: as the systemroot. Then I was able to get through the Win2k Setup sucessfully. Using Windows Update - I sucessfully installed Internet Explorer, but SP4 pack fails repeatedly. svcpack.log says: "Apply failed: c: <temp>\download\ntdll._p on h:\winnt\ntdll to get c:\<temp>\ntdll..dll" and repeats a similar message f…

Virus W32.Virut.B
by Guest Bill Norton- 4 replies

I have a server that got infected by the virus W32.Virut.B and was able to clean it from all the infected files except one. The file that I cannot clean is winmgnt.exe When I run Norton on it, it finds the virus but cannot clean or quaranteen the virus and leaves it alone. I've tried to run Norton in " Safe Mode " and also in " Safe Mode with Networking " but to no avail. Thanks, Bill url:http://www.ureader.com/gp/1338-1.aspx

two operating systems???
by Guest Julia- 4 replies

My stepfather tried to to a system repair with windows 2000. It would not do a repair so he reinstalled windows. He now has 2 operating systems on his machine. Can one be removed and how or does he reformat and start over. If that is the case where is the best place to get step by step directions. Should he download drivers to a disk as well? He will not have access to the internet while his system is down. It is an older machine but the only one that is in the budget.

IIS 5.0 W3Svc will not start eventids 202 116 7023
by Guest RM-admin- 4 replies

I have a single Windows 2000 Server in a small domain. The local Intranet site is hosted off of this Server with IIS 5.0. The server is updated to SP4 with all security patches. The IIS service sometimes starts after reboot but the admin page is inaccessible as is the IIS Admin mmc. I am not sure but it seems to be an issue with the registry or metabase. I have resinstalled IIS 5.0 several times to resolve and looked at several KB articles. Where should I begin? I have a MPS report if needed. --------------------- Event Type: Error Event Source: LicenseService Event Category: None Event ID: 202 Date: 11/27/2007 Time: 11:39:37 AM User: N…

Options for Logging On
by Guest Thomas- 4 replies

On Win 2K Pro I have 2 Administrator Accts. + 2 Other. On another HD, I have Vista Ultimate & w/ Vista when I boot up I get three icons from which I can choose & check: 1 for Admin., 1 for my User Name; and a Third for Guest. Can I get the same sort of options on boot-up to Win 2K Pro's screen? NOTE: I do not need or use Passwords, so none are required for booting to either HD. However w/ Win 2K Pro, it just boots right into my Wallpaper, Start Menu, Desktop, etc. WITHOUT giving me an option which of the accounts I might wish to utilize. I want to be able to access the other accts. sometimes. Thanks for any clarity on settings or whatever it…

CMD command string limit - 2047 bytes
by Guest JaimitoP- 4 replies

Hi all, I've read a MS article ( Article ID: 830473 ) that CMD is limited to 2047 bytes; that limit works when i type all those characters in a CMD window. It also worked when a legacy app uses CMD to run a command (it was about 4 months). Server and client stations have always been W2K SP4, with all critical updates installed until today... But now, the same legacy app can issue a 4060-byte lon command string with no problem!!!! Does any one of you geniuses know if it's been modfied in a W2K update/service pack? I made some chages/restrictions into my app based on 2047 limit and now i have to explain why thaty limit has benn iincreased!!!! Help P…

Mixer Device
by Guest Roger Fink- 4 replies

I'm having a problem with an application, but I suspect it's an OS or hardware problem, so hopefully this is the correct place to solve it. On my W2K desktop computer, I have a program for digitally recording and cleaning up analog audio sources such as cassettes and vinyl ("Golden Records" from NCH Swift). At the start of a conversion, a wizard appears. In the box where the record level is set there is a click bar, "Open Windows Record Mixer". But when I click the bar I get an error message: "There is a problem with your sound hardware. You may install mixer devices from the Add/Remove hardware wizard in the Control Panel". Trying to follow through on the…

How do you make NTBACKUP back up open files?
by Guest BadBoy House- 4 replies
We use ntbackup to back up our server each night. Normally this works fine but since introducing a remote access solution for staff it seems that if staff leave a server based program open on their workstations the backup system doesn't back the files up. This is beginning to get problematic as some important data is being excluded from the backup. Other than trying to make sure that staff close programs is there anything else I can do to make sure that the data is backed up successfully? Is there a way of automatically closing programs at a certain time? thanks in advance.

Services.exe-entry point not found.
by Guest Ushnell- 4 replies

After updating my Windows 2000 Pro with update rollup 1 and the service pack, I realized my hard disk's space went down gradually so later decided to uninstall both to find out which one is the cause. After uninstalling the service pack though, it demanded that the computer be restarted. Windows restarted but a dialog screen popped up with the message: the entry point: IsWellKnownIs could not be found in the dynamic link library ADVAPI32.DLL. because of this Windows now starts up slowly, network connections, printers and multimedia are not available and Explorer generates errors when I do right-click commands. This problem has caused my computer to b…

Selection of graphic software for picture display
by Guest Beyond X- 4 replies

I want to know how to set up my Win2K so that a particular graphic software is selected to display a picture file (e.g. -.jpg) by clicking it in Win Explorer. Presently the bulky Photoshop is automatically selected and loaded after long wait before the picture is shown. If I can somehow change the setup so that Paint is selected, for instance, waiting time should be a lot shorter.
