Chkdsk runs twice?
by Guest void.no.spam.com@gmail.com- 4 replies
- 372 views
If I tell Windows to do a chkdsk on my C drive and D drive on restart, and then I restart my computer, it will chkdsk the D drive and then chkdsk the C drive, and then it will restart again and then chkdsk the D drive again before finally loading up Windows. Is it normal for it to chkdsk the D drive twice? Is it safe to tell it to skip the second chkdsk of the D drive?

Problem deleting large files
by Guest ejohnson@unitedwww.com- 4 replies

I'm running a windows 2000 server with NTFS as the filing system. It's an email server. I'm having problems deleting some large files that are on this server. It seems that if a file is in excess of 500MB, then I can't delete it. I've tried deleting one via windows explorer and the server's UI hung. I've tried deleteing another through the command prompt, and the same thing happened. Some more info: * I was actually attempting to DELETE the file, not move it to the recycle bin. I held down the shift key so it would actually delete the file. * I shut down all the mail services before I attempted to delete the files so I knew there were no processes wi…

BSOD STOP 0x0000001A from CPU test
by Guest George Orwell- 4 replies

My PC froze when I tried to watch a DVD. I ran dxdiag and it also froze the PC. So I started to check things. I ran two free CPU testers (BURNMAX and CPUSTABTEST). They run for 5-10 minutes and both give the same Blue Screen Of Death: STOP 0x00000001A MEMORY MANAGEMENT does this suggest some hardware is on the way out? Note CPUSTABTEST was only running the simple test, not one of those CPU stress/heat options. How to differentiate windows 2000 from XP
by Guest Sriprinks@gmail.com- 4 replies
Hi, I have a software that can check for system process running on a computer. I wish to use this software to differentiate between a windows 2000 system and windows xp. Is there a system process that is specific and found only in Windows 2000 and not in windows xp? If there is one, then I can prevent windows 2000 systems from coming on to my network by first checking for this process and then blocking network access. Appreciate ur thoughts on this..

Were are the install files for Win2K?
by Guest misterrogers@no-email.com- 4 replies
- 390 views
When I bought my computer it came with a registered version of Windows 2000 installed. I did not want to use Win2K at that time. I have always used Win98 and I just unplugged the Win2k harddrive, which was only 10 gigs anyhow, so I had no need for it. I installed a larger harddrive and installed 98 on it. Recently I was having some hard drive problems, so I plugged in that Windows 2K drive to determine if the problem was my hard drive, or something else. It was the hard drive, so I was stuck using Win2k for a few days until I got things repaired. In the process, I got to like Win2k, but I also want to keep using Win98. Thus, I want to make a dual boot …

Formatting CDs
by Guest Joe McGuire- 4 replies
I am trying to copy files from my Win2000 desktop to CD, but all the brand new CDs I install are not recognized. The CD drive will read CDs with data on them, so that much of the device seems to work. How can I format the CDs so they will be recognized? I'm not sure if there is a dumber question, but I have wasted the better part of an hour trying to find the answer, to no avail, and my colleagues have ordered me out of the building since I was yelling at the computer so much. Help!

[OT?] CD-ROM and Hard Drive on Same Cable
by Guest W. Watson- 4 replies
I can't find a suitable PC hardware NG that looks current, so I'll post here until someone directs me to a better NG. It's been awhile since I played hook up with drives. Here's my problem. I have a CD-ROM drive at the end of a cable. It works fine. I thought I'd stick a HD in as a slave. It doesn't get detected. I made it a slave. However, I have no idea what the CD-ROM thinks it is--Ah, master according to BIOS. It looks like it has two jumpers. (What are the jumper possibilities for it?) It's a 56x Disc shown in BIOS as G6D M1.30. I'm pretty sure the cables are 48-pin. The HD is a boot disk from an older system, and is in a removable drive (handle on…

C2 compliance?
by Guest Ham Pastrami- 4 replies
I have read some articles about Windows NT/2K C2-compliance. The part that interests me is object reuse protection. Supposedly this means that disk space is initialized to 0 when it is allocated. However, I don't see this happening on my 2K system, not as far as I can tell. Wouldn't zeroing (for say, hundreds of megabytes) imply a long write to disk everytime a new file was created? I initially thought that C2 compliance could be achieved through configuration, but did not ship that way out of the box. Some of the articles state that the evaluation applies to off-the-shelf products, which is ambiguous as to whether that means default configuration or simply a l…

I have to defrag all the Windows 2k machines hence the previous tech only defrag once performance was affected. I know how to created a scheduled task but need to know if it will run under admin even if the computer is login in by another user other than the administrator. Or if the scheduled task will only run if the computer log out and at the login prompt. Any insight would be great.

other partition corrupted if (32GB) FAT32 filesystem filled >= 29GiB
by Guest Daniel B.- 4 replies
Is the following bug known (and is there a fix)? On Windows 2000 with SP4, if I create 32GiB partition, format it as a FAT32 file system, and try to fill it past a threshold that is somewhere between 28.75 GiB and 29 GiB, Windows overwrites the beginning of different partition (the C: volume) (writing over the FATs and the root directory). It seems that when Windows tries to write files beyond that point in the partition, something in memory gets corrupted and it decides to write over the C: partition. The problem seems stable (not intermittent). (Testing by copying 1-GiB files to the 32GiB partition showed the threshold was between 28 and 29 GiB. Re-st…

Shortcut to change password dialog
by Guest rvaas- 3 replies

Hi everybody, I want to create a shortcut to open the change password dialog for the current user. The users can´t use Ctrl-Alt-Del because they only connect via Terminal Server - and they asked whether they could change their passwords whenever they want (it works when the password expires, but they want to control when they change it). Is there a way to open that dialog via explorer with command line options or WMI call (maybe via VBS) to open that dialog? Kind regards, Rudi
