Desktop icon font colour?
by Guest h.stroph- 3 replies
Greetings, How do I change the colour of the icon font on the desktop? The current white is just too diffivult to see on a weak older back-lighted lcd. Properties | Appearance | Item | Icon - allows a choice of font, size, bold and italic, but the colour pull-down is greyed-out. I'd like the font under the icons on the desktop to be black while preserving all other current characteristics such as background colour. Changing the background colour to black or a darker colour makes the white fonts much more visible, but I find the tone to be too somber for my tastes. Changing the font colour is all I desire, but can't find out how to do it without your help. …

imaginary sound card keeps installing itself?
by Guest jbclem- 3 replies
Everytime I uninstall it, and reboot, this non existent Yamaha DS1 sound card installs itself. This is preventing my real sound card that I just bought (Turtle Beach Santa Cruz) from installing itself. The old sound card managed to co-exist with the imaginary one, but the Santa Cruz won't. I've gone through the registry and removed all references to Yamaha (some keys wouldn't delete until I changed their permissions). That takes 30 minutes...then on the next reboot they/it reinstall. I've uninstalled the Yamaha in Device Manager but it comes right back. Is there a way I can prevent plug and play from reinstalling this Yamaha sound card. It is not present on t…

On a multiboot system, how can I edit the registry on the second partition from the first? Regedit (or Regedt32 as far as I can see) doesn't have a regular <File Open> dialogue and <Connect Network Registry> won't let me connect to the other partition on the same machine.

Windows installer launching whenever I try to open a file
by Guest glorywest- 3 replies
I've searched Microsoft, the web and groups but can't find this same problem (similar, but not the same) with a solution, so I'll try here to see if I have better luck. Within the last two weeks whenever I double click to open a file in Windows Explorer, Windows Installer launches and tries to install Contribute 3. I have not recently installed Contribute or performed any other software installations or updates other than Firefox. I have not done any recent MS auto updates either. It first began when clicking excel files, but now is happening with other MS files types and plain text files. I have to keep trying to cancel to get the dialog box to disappear. …

I have a new harddisk. I have formatted it. I wonder if it's better to do a check disk as well in case there are problems with the disk. Would the formatting step have handle all the errors that could have been picked up by check disk ? Thanks.

How to do a repair/install in Windows 2000 Pro
by Guest Victek- 3 replies
I'm getting ready to do a repair/install of Windows 2000 Pro. I've done this many times with XP, but this is the first time with Win2000 and I wonder if there are any unique issues I should be aware of? Assuming the process doesn't crash can I trust that installed applications and data will be unaffected? Any advice appreciated.

"full-screen" DOS window doesn't fill screen
by Guest ynotssor- 3 replies
I have an old DOS program that runs in a cmd.exe window which can be made to use the full screen with Alt-Enter. This works properly on another win200 machine, but on a Toshiba laptop the full screen mode fills the width but NOT the height of the screen. I've made sure that the Properties and the Console Windows Properties of the C:\winnt\system32\cmd.exe window are the same on both machines, using Raster Fonts 8x12 and the same Layout, Screen Buffer 80x420 and Window Size 80x25. Still, the fullscreen mode on the laptop doesn't fill the vertical of the screen for any cmd.exe application, even just a command prompt. What am I mssing here, please?

Windows 2000 Professional Printing Problem
by Guest roback@earthlink.net- 3 replies
I have a printing problem. I use a simple visual basic program to do some billing for my office. I went to print a form out of it this morning and did not put in a specific date range to print. Instead of a blank form, pages and pages of random printer/printing information started to pour out of my printer. I tried to print a word doc just to see if it was a os issue or program specific, and it did the same thing. I don't understand it. Is there some kind of endless loop spool file that no matter what I try to print now gets sent to my printer??? What do I do? I tried unplugging the connections from the printer and rebooting with no avail. The o…

Setting the Clocks Back and Windows 2000?
by Guest Victor- 3 replies
O.K., here we are, November 4, 2007. Daylight Savings time is over, and it's time to set the clocks back. What's different this year is that, even after a reboot, Windows 2000 did not prompt me to accept a new clock change, nor did the clock on my computer go back automatically. It did go back on my XP computer, though (no prompting to accept the update). In Win2K, when I go to Settings > Date/Time Properties | Time Zone, "Automatically adjust clock for daylight savings changes" is checked. I don't want to manually adjust the Win2K time back one hour unless I'm sure that the time won't get set back automatically at some later date. What gives? H…

multi boot thinks 98se is win2k
by Guest Quaestor- 3 replies

I have run win2k & win98se before with this system, multibooting just fine. After reinstalling w2k, I found that win98se would no longer boot, with the complaint that ntoskrnl could not be found (a w2k problem). Reinstalling w98 did not help. No matter how I try to deal with it, trying to boot w98 from the multi-boot menu runs into the problem that it thinks I'm trying to boot w2k. Here is the boot.ini, which according to all I've read (and that's a lot) should be working: [boot Loader] Timeout=7 Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [Operating Systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="XXCLONE: (Cloned Volume) [d:0,…

Year changing after reboot
by Guest rammer007- 3 replies

Every time I reboot the computer the date/time calendar year changes from 2007 to 2005. It has been doing this the last 4 to six weeks. What causes this and what can I do to stop it. I know the year has changed because I keep getting certificate expiration notices, which force mean I have to go to control panel/date-time/ and change the year which for some reason goes to 2005.

Networking Does Not Start After Reboot
by Guest John A. Bailo- 3 replies
We have several Windows 2000 servers on a subnet. Every weekend we do a maintenance reboot. The problem is that typically one or more servers don't connect back to the network and have to be rebooted again. They all have static IP addresses. They are on the same subnet, connected to the Internet and to another subnet via a router. Why won't the network start on reboot? Is there a way to have the server restart it's networking without a full reboot (something that I could put into a script or in the scheduler to happen five minutes after boot)? This issue has been plaguing us for years and I have never found an answer...
