by Guest Lincmark- 13 replies

I recently installed a new, larger hard boot drive and cloned all the data from the old drive to the new. When I tried to access Microsoft Windows Update, I got the following message: Thank you for your interest in obtaining updates from our site. This website is designed to work with Microsoft Windows operating systems only. To find updates for Microsoft products that are designed for Macintosh operating systems, please visit http://www.microsoft.com/mac/. I am running Win 2K sp4 on a dell pc. Might anyone have a suggestion on how to fix this?

W2k Pro - Logon via dial-up only
by Guest David Patnaude- 13 replies

A user took a laptop home this weekend and had trouble logging on. On the next attempt, he checked to box to login via a dial-up connection even though ther is no way this would have worked. Now there is no option to logon to the domain or the local machine, only the dial-up connection. My understanding is that you would need the ERD, be able to login via dial- up, or remotely connect to the machine to correct the registry setting. We don't have an ERD for this machine, no dial in connections, and the machine says that it is unavailable for remote connection in the office. Do I have any other options to get this machine back onto the domain? Thanks, …

All I get is a blinking cursor. Here's what happened: Just finished a fresh single-partition NTFS-format and Windows 2000 SP4 install on a Maxtor 80gb IDE drive, fully Windows-Updated it, and loaded up a suite of programs. During the numerous reboots required, it always booted fine and everything was running smoothly. From the C: drive Properties/Tools menu in Explorer, ran Error checking (with no switches); it reported no problems. Then ran Defragment in analyze mode. It reported bad fragmentation, so I booted into Safe Mode (for access to as much of the disk as possible), deleted as many temp files as I could find (Temp Internet files, \Docs & Se…

remote Shutdown Command
by Guest Haggis- 13 replies

I have an odd issue. the scenario is this. i have a server (A) connected to a UPS that is set to run a batch file when the battery power gets to some predetermined level. THis batch file is a remote shutdown command to bring down the another server (B) connected to the UPS. As part of the test i send a command line email before and after the remote shutdown command so that i know that it has run. Now the remote shutdown command runs properly when i test it on the Server (A) and both emails are sent. When i test it on the UPS, the emails are sent but the remote shutdown command fails. I cannot understand why, it is obvious that the command is running bu…

Lost Hibernate Tab
by Guest mickey- 12 replies
I'm running windows 2000 professional. Sometime ago I noticed that the notebook refused to suspend. Further investigation revealed that the "Hibernate" tab under the control-panel power-option disapeared. I tried updating the OS with the original CD, but that didn't work. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can regain the "Hibernate" tab, without re-installing the OS?

windows 2000 AS showing disk is full when it shouldn't be
by Guest group22- 12 replies
Hi, I have a Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP4. Windows is saying the disk was nearly full. (about 32GB used) The disk is roughly 34GB and I didn't see any large folders or files on it. If I look at the properties of all folders (including hidden) the folder sizes add up to about 6GB. This morning, I ran a utility called i.disk that displays folder size graphically and it is only showing about 6Gb of disk space used. I have scanned for viruses and found none. I scanned for rootkits and it came up clean. I ran a file system check on boot, that didn't clear it up. Any ideas as to how to proceed? Thanks, Rob

Unable to open files after chkdsk
by Guest Chris- 12 replies
We have a windows 2000 PC running in our office where all our common files are stored. Basically all our word documents, spreadsheets and our databases. The system reported a problem on the one hard drive where all the files are stored and requested that chkdsk be run on reboot. This was done and windows went ahead and repaired a number of files. All the files are still there, and even the correct file sizes are displayed, however we are unable to access 50% of them. When you try open a file in word, word tries to import the file saying it doesn't recognise the file type. The same with excel, PDF's, and JPG's. As Murphy’s law would have it, it seems i…

I often have to synchronise some folders on my desktop and notebook. So far I was simply copying the contents of one folder into another. This takes time. How do I synchronise the folders without replacing the files which have not been changed? WindoewExplorer-Tools-Synchronise does only some synchronisation with the Internet

Wireless problem
by Guest Sirius- 12 replies

Hello Well Respected Microsoft MVPs. Did I post to the right group or should I try somewhere else? I just purchased a refurb. wireless PCMCIA card for my notebook. Netgear WN511b and Compaq Presario 1700 17XL265 Win2000 sp4. I followed instructions, installed newest drivers, put the card in when prompted. Got a strong signal and the status is "Connected to router" It should however say "connected to internet". Because of this webpages do not load. It works with a wire. The manual that I also downloaded says in the troubleshooting section is that this would be a network configuration problem, but then how come it works with a wire. I took off the firew…

Operating System: Windows 2000 Pro Service Pack 4 RAM is now 512MB Okay, I receive a Error Message stating that "There is not enough memory to run Word" so I took the computer in to have more RAM installed. Increased it from 128MB to 512MB by removing old 128MB card and installed 2 - 256MB cards for a new total of 512MB. Tried to open Word and received the same Error message. The computer shop told me to un-install Office and then re-install. The un-installed seemed to work fine, but now when I try to install Office 2002, I just get a quick flash of the Windows Installer and then absolutely nothing happens. I then tried to download nad install the Windows …

Boot problem
by Guest Paul Floyd- 12 replies

Hi I'm trying to revive an old PC. It works fine with Solaris, Linux, FreeBSD and OS/2. However, it won't boot Windows 2000. In the past, it worked OK with windows. I've tried safe boot and LKG. After the login screen, I get a blank desktop for a couple of minutes, then it falls back to the login screen. Partition Magic 8 finds no errors on the 2 partitions (D: boot, F: data, on 2 disks). Same thing for chkdsk from the recovery console. And though I can login to the recovery console, I can't perform a repair or even reinstall (in both cases, the W2K installation can't be found). My next line of attack is likely to be to either mount the boot partition f…

W2K SP4 dual boot problems
by Guest legg- 12 replies
I've been nursing along a W98 2ed (on C:) W2K SP4 ( on D:) dual boot system since Y2K. My back-up method involved ternary rotation of hard drive sets. This produces a working hard drive for C and D, a most recent individual back up for each, and a previous back-up of each. Backing up involves cloning the current drive's contents onto the oldest back-up drives, installing the recent clones into operation, and retiring the working drives to most recent back-up position. Every time I do this, I get some kind of problem. Usually this involves an inaccessible W2K or W98 OS. Repair usually involves using W2K setup disc set, to fixmbr (default) from the command co…

(sorry for the repost - lost first message) I took home my old work computer for my daughter. I wanted to eliminate the password prompt at start up, went into the control panel and made changes in "passwords". I changed to administrator and left the passwords blank (thinking I would just hit enter when/if password was prompted) and check 'home computer". Well when I restated it prompted for password and now I'm lock out. No matter what I do I cannot get back into windows. HELP PLEASE

Hard Drive Replacement
by Guest Norm Cook- 12 replies

Hi experts: I have 2 physical internal hard drives: c: 30GB single partition - operating system d: 80GB single partition - data Have ordered a Seagate 320GB. My plan: 1) copy everything from d: to my usb external & delete all folders/files 2) copy everything from c: to d: 3) shutdown & install the 80GB drive as master (c:) and the new 320GB drive as slave (d:) Is this doable or will I have to do a clean/reinstall windows etc on the 80GB. If this plan won't work, I will likely just leave the c: drive as is and replace the d: (80GB) with the new 320GB drive. Thanks all--

can not create folder called scripts anymore

Hello, Since two days I realised on my windows 2000 server that every folder called "scripts" is disappeared and when I try to create a file or folder called "scripts", doesn't matter in which directory, I get the following error message: Cannot rename New Folder: A file with the name you specified already exists. Specify a different filename. I did a search in the registry for "scripts", I killed every unknown process, I disabled every unimportant service, I searched for alternate NTFS Streams, hidden files, Viruses and Trojans... no success.. I still can not create a file or folder called "scripts". I can create "skripts, "script" e.g. but no "…

My father recently accepted an automatic MS update on his computer, running Windows 2000 with all updates up to that point. His desktop and documents disappeared, with the login now looking like a new user. Turns out that C:\Documents and Settings still has his original profile directories under User, including his document files (phew!), but now also has an empty profile consisting of User.ComputerName, which is where he somehow gets placed when logging in using his user name (as judged by where Windows Explorer opens up to, in Start Menu). We created a new user, and Win2K creates another profile file set under NewUser.ComputerName, and then appears to disr…
