Windows 2000 Pro, SP4
by Guest Bill Watt- 11 replies

My daughter has a Dell 1GB desktop that came with Win 2k Pro SP3. The new printer requires SP4. Would like to know where I can get it. Does it automatically install or is it a download to install. I would like to download it with my Win 98SE machine to a CD and then install it on her machine. Her machine is running well so I'd prefer not to install any other patches other than SP4. They use the machine for business so it's important to keep it up and running. Would appreciate help with this. I searched the group but found no specific info. Hard Drive partitions
by Guest Ushnell- 11 replies

I just bought a used Gateway computer from a neighbor and I've bumped into a problem that's causing myself to ask: what the hell was this person thinking! The Gateway contains Windows 2000 on it on a 9.52 or 10.00 Gigabyte hard drive but the big mistake he made is that he created three other partitions on the basic disk of the drive and the main drive C:\ where Windows stores the software files is the one that's loosing all the storage space and the rest are all beefed up. I've tried to fix this problem using Disk Management in the Administrative Tools section of the control panel and tried to see what happens by deleting the E:\ partition. I taught t…

Folder locked as Read Only
by Guest Danno- 11 replies

Somehow I've gotten my Program Files folder marked as Read Only. This of course prevents me from updating data files, or deleting anything under PF. I tried using the properties tab to uncheck RO, but that didn't work. Tried the same thing in safe mode, but it didn't work either. I restored the registry to a time before the problem using ERDNT, but it didn't work either. I tried changing the attributes using CMD, and I booted up in Command mode only. Neither one would let me change the attribute. HELP! Thanks in advance, Dan Hacker W2000ProSP4 -- ----------- Thousands of years ago cats were worshipped as gods. Cats have never forgott…

Downloads often halt at 50KB. (Attempt #2.)
by Guest Robbie Hatley- 11 replies

(Second attempt. Hmmm... No responses at all to first attempt. Ok. I'll try again. I'll also post to the IE6 group, though I'm not really sure if this is an IE6 problem or a Win2000 problem; the two are so tightly intertwined.) I've been having a problem recently on two different computers, both running IE6 and Windows 2000 Professional: when downloading files from the Internet, the download often stops at 50KB, with Windows thinking that the download is complete, even if the actual file size was 1.38MB or 11.85MB or whatever. Once this happens, it can take many further attempts to get the download to complete. I did find a partial work-around, by acci…

autoexec.nt elusive
by Guest John B- 11 replies

I am running under Windows 2000 Pro + sp4. I have gone into a CMD window and typed "autoexec.nt" + [enter]. A file executes OTHER than the one and only autoexec.nt file that I can find in my computer... The one I find is at %systemroot%\system32\autoexec.nt. How can this be? Can anyone refresh my memory? It seems there were various "autoexec" files under Windows 95...a long time ago. I have used "attrib" to scan the system32 directory, which should ferret out hidden files, but I only see autoexec.nt...the same one I can edit. TIA John

Pushing Buttons
by Guest Sid Elbow- 10 replies

Something that's bothered me for years and I wondered if anyone could shed some light: Not infrequently when I use the mouse to push a screen "button", I'm perhaps a bit sloppy, the button-push isn't seen and I have to do it again more carefully ... ..... and yet, sloppy or not, I actually *see* the button depress. Thus Windows sure as heck knows I pushed it so why doesn't it respond? It's almost like pushing a button on the TV remote and not pressing hard enough. Surely Windows buttons aren't pressure-sensitive. This kind of reminds me of a problem I used to have in Win3X days where a double-click wouldn't take. After messing with the double-clic…

Reinstall Win 2000 Pro
by Guest leapjay- 10 replies
After considerable discussion, Tech Support in my ISP suggested that I reinstall Windows. I have Windows 2000 Pro, and have the install CD -- in fact I have 2 CD's: one that is labelled "Windows 2000 Professional Step by Step Interactive", and a second one, labelled "1-2 Processor Edition" that was shrinkwrapped with a Quick Start Guide, and has a "Includes Spervice Pack 2" sticker on the outside of the envelope. Which one should I use, and are there any tips to look for? I searched the Microsoft web site for 2 hours but could not find one article on reinstalling Win 2000.

"Socket 0 Error" / IRQ conflicts
by Guest David D.- 10 replies

I have W2K Pro SP4. My system frequently crashes with a "Socket 0 error". It does not crash if running in safe mode with no internet connection. IRQ conflicts might be the culprit (although I could be wrong about that). Laptop HD upgrade, NTLDR is Missing!!
by Guest Stephen- 10 replies

I have a Compaq Evo N600c laptop, with Windows 2000 Pro. The existing 30GB HD gave me a scare the other day when the machine started and wanted to scan the drive for errors. It had previously shutdown normally. The scan showed 32K of bad sectors, so I thought it time to replace it. The original drive was a Hitachi Travelstar, but I could get an identical new one, so I got a Hitachi Travelstar 60GB drive instead. A sector-by-sector copy was taken using Ghost 8.5, and this was put onto the new drive. When mounted in a USB casing the new drive functions fine, and all the files in the new drive are accessible. However the laptop will not boot from it. I have …

W2K SP4's Task Scheduler won't start because of "System error 1083has occurred." Hello. I am having a problem with an old Dell Optiplex desktop that is using old Windows 2000 SP4 (all critical updates). I noticed event logs say it has problems starting Windows' Task Scheduler service. I can't turn it on manually through GUI and command line. HD formatting problem
by Guest r2d2- 10 replies
I have purchased a Samsung SATA 160GB HD to be added to an existing windows 2000 having one SATA 80 GB partitioned disk (2x40GB NTFS). I have partitioned the new HD in 2x80 NTFS but I can only format one partition. The other one refuses to be formatted. Then I created a single partition (1x160) but it refuses the format process too. I have used Paragon Hard Disk Manager 8.0 and also the Windows Format command. The funny thing is that Format starts formatting but ends with the "unable to complete the format" error message after what seems to be a normal formatting time. Any idea on what´s wrong?

Win98 to 2000
by Guest Cottonmouth- 10 replies

I've been using W98 for years without problems, but it's getting so there's too many things I can't use/access with W98. My sister has offered me Win2000 so to bring me out of the dark ages. The questions I have are; is W2000 a memory hog(384meg); would it be better to make it dual bootable with W98 so if I had problems I'd still be able to fall back on W98? Are all the patches readily available for download or on CD? It's been a long, long time since I've upgraded and I'm a little nervous about jumping into it. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Growing slowness, can't find solution
by Guest Daniel Kaplan- 10 replies

Hi, Have a Win2000 machine, not much ram, 8Gbs of free HD space left. The computer's slowness has been growing and growing. I run on a regular basis: * NAV full scan (once a week) * Defrag (once a week) * and lately Ad-Aware and Spybot. It's gotten so bad that I went an ddeleted all offline content (the user of that machine was playing an AOL game alot). So today I noticed that the Recyle Bin icon showed full, but there were no items, and saying "Empty Recycle Bin" did nothing. So I went and changed the Virtual Memory size to the bare minimum, rebooted, was then able to "Empty Recycle Bin" and the icon showed ok. Reset the VM size to the…

PLEASE HELP! My System is Hijaked!
by Guest Bryan Elwood- 10 replies

My Windows 2000 system has begun to spontaneously dial a foreign country through my dial-up modem. It occurs at random times throughout the day. If I am dialed in, the offending entity will hang up with my ISP, then begin dialing on its own. The bug will make 11 or so attempts before giving up until later. Watching Task Manager closely during an episode, there is no noticeable activity under Processes. However, I believe I have halted the bug in mid-stream by closing all instances of Internet Explorer 6, unless of course the bug simply reached its set number of attempts. My Norton AV expired some time ago, but I am up to date with Windows Updates. I did…

Computer reboots on Shutdown, locks up on Stand By Am working through various KB articles troubleshooting an APM issue with my Win2K computer. Two problems occur: 1. When it's powered down via Start/Shut Down..., Shut down, the shutdown proceeds normally, Windows closes out and the power goes off, but as soon as the fans stop spinning (~3-4 seconds after screen goes black), the motherboard fires up again and reboots, back into Windows. 2. Standby mode: computer appears to go into standby mode successfully (popup reports going into Standby, screen goes black, disks stop spinning, and CPU fan shuts off. But then the CPU fan and disks fire up again, the fron…

*** VIRUS WARNING!!! ***
by Guest Terry Mester- 10 replies

I have discovered how Spammers are able to access people's Computers to spew out their Spyware garbage, and it is Microsoft's OS which has made this possible! Spammers utilize two commands: the "nslookup" Command and the "ftp" Command found in c:\winnt\system32 -- which you can review in the Windows Help Menu. Spammers can also use a HTML E-Mail you open on your Computer while logged onto the Internet to download a Virus. Those E-Mails you get from friends telling you to forward it on to others, in order to get good luck or money, are nothing but a SCAM perpetrated by the Spammers! DELETE those E-Mails -- DO NOT open them!!! Last month after separat…

When I try to install saved program updates to Office 97 by launching them from my hard drive I get the following message: Error: Setup could not find a drive with [xxxkb] free disk space to install the program. Please free up some space first and retry or press cancel to exit setup. As an experiment I transferred the files to a flash drive. When run from that location they installed with no problem. I then tried to install a large update to Paint Shop Pro 7 from the hard drive and I got the following message: Error: The file C:\Winnt\System32\msvcp60.dll is in use and cannot be installed. Please exit all other applications and retry. Press Ignore …
