Mistakenly deleted User Account
by Guest Ushnell- 1 reply

I decided to edit the User Accounts in the Control Panel to just change the original owners name Edwin to my name and though that the System would transfer those settings to my account so I deleted the original owners account; what a big mistake! I tried to solve this by creating the same user account under that same name but the System creates a folder in the Documents and Setting named Edwin.000 with it's fresh setting of desktop wallpaper image, my documents folder contents and Start menu items that are the default settings. One thing that I saw that makes me feel lucky though is that in the System Properties where User Profiles is, the system con…

IPP problem - page cannot be displayed
by Guest Bill Fisher- 1 reply

I am trying to set up my win2k pro machine as an IPP print server but I can't get the printer web page to load,. instead, I get an http error # 500 "page cannot be displayed". When I browse to http://printserver/printers I get the prompt to enter the user name and the password and then I get the above described error. I get this error when browsing from both the client (an xp machine) and the server (the win2k machine). Note that in my router setup I have forwarded TCP port # 631 to the win2k machine. Other web pages on this IIS server work fine. I can access them without any problems so there is nothing wrong with my IIS setup.(or so I think). If anyon…

Protection against rouge use of admin password
by Guest rubberlugs- 1 reply
I know this may be unethical, but I know for a fact that our network techie was stupid enough to give the admin password out to someone who shouldn't have it. I don't believe he would do anything vicious with it like harvest details etc but he would use it for his gossipy fishwife ways. I feel put in a hard position, I don't want to be the local snitch and would rather batten down my hatches so that I am protected. We all leave our machine on overnight and that's when he would remote in and nosey around. Is there anyway I can keep this person out of my machine and that idiot of a techie too? I sometimes remote onto my machine myself for work reasons so don…

I have an old (6+ years) Dell desktop with Win 2000 Pro. I think it was fully updated to about a 2 years ago, so I'm guessing SP4 is installed. It's just been too long to remember and I can't find out because of the "Problem". Haven't a clue where the install disks are or even if I had any - you know Dell. It has worked flawlessly always This computer is a stand-alone and used by my wife in our business. I've tended to ignore it for a while now, as all she uses it for is to check her emails and read the news. It is protected by Norton AV (currently out of date), Spyware Doctor (same), and Spybot. I have it set up with rather draconian settings in IE6 …

Migration from Server 2000 w/IIS 5 to Server 2003 w/IIS6.0 ISAPI f
by Guest Ubiquitor- 1 reply

I installed an ISAPI filters (Oracle SSO) on a Windows Server 2000 system wih IIS 5, which serves classic ASP from an ASP application. This configuration functioned without fault. After an upgrade to new hardware and Windows 2003 SE SP2 with IIS 6.0 the old ASP application was copied to this new server. After installing the ISAPI filter (Oracle SSO), numerous worker process errors have started to appear. This is a major annoyance and often results in an IIS 6.0 crash. Is there a configuration or compatibility problem?

Windows 2000 Pro Troubleshooting
by Guest paul- 1 reply

I sent a couple of older IBM Thinkpad laptops out to some customers in the field. Both had Windows 2000 installed. Before I shipped them out, I downloaded current Norton antivirus signatures and also checked the Windows Update site to ensure both systems were up to date. I get a call today that one of the users is receiving a message to insert the Windows 2000 CD. I didn't send that with her. Anyone know how I can disable this or correct it without having to interact with her? Would a generic Windows 2000 Pro CD work? Any suggestions would be helpful.

Domain Controller Issues - Urgent Help
by Guest bcurran@gmail.com- 1 reply

Due to some issues with a failed domain controller upgrade to new hardware, I am having an issue with my domain controllers. I demoted one of my DCs after this upgrade and had many issues. I restored the DC from backup, however now that DC does not appear in the Domain Controllers group under AD Users and Computers. My question is, can I just run DCPROMO again to make it a domain controller again. I have another DC that is functioning and is authenticating users and allowing for Exchange mail delivery just fine. The only issue I have is that when our users change their passwords, through Netware, and try to sync them with windows, their Windows accounts keep gett…

SD card reader + Flash drive do NOT work with 2k, but OK with XP
by Guest kimiraikkonen- 1 reply

Hello, I have a system it has been working OK with several USB devices such as flash drives. I've bought a SD card reader and connected, it's recognized successfully but it generated lots of event id: 17 and 168 error logs in "event viewer". I couldn't mean because i was copying bi- directonal good with no error logs. Additionaly, i connected my flash drive while USB SD card reader is being connected, but it couldn't be recognized... If i unplug SD card reader, flash drive works very good. I have SP4 and i tried these hardwares on another XP SP2 machine with NO problems. Why does Windows 2000 have lots of bugs especially for new drives like SD readers? …

Bypassing Administrator Logon

I had to rebuild my windows 2000 system, and now it waits for me to logon (press the enter key) during startup. My old system went ahead and booted up to the desktop and I didn't have to logon - I forgot how I got it to do that - does anybody know what I have to set to make it go ahead and LOGON without waiting for my to respond? I am logon on as administrator and the PC in question is not connected to the internet (I bypassed the network setup).

I have always used Win98se. I just bought a used computer with Win2k on it. I know 2K is similar to XP. so maybe someone can help. On my Win98 computer I had a C: drive that was my boot and programs drive. Then I had a second slave drive that was all my storage of pictures, music and dwnloads. It was split in 3 partitions (one for each catagory I just mentioned). I was using Win2k and had my camera card reader and a flash memory stick plugged in, which were listed as D: and E:. When I plugged in this storage harddrive, I thought it would end up being D: E: and F: (like it was in my old computer). Instead it became F: G: H:. Because those USB devices wer…

Writing perfomance data to a log file

Hi, I'm using the performance data helper library to write some performance counters to a log file but the only format available to me seems to be the CSV format. Is there a way I can have the log written in PERFMON format? ////// start code pdhStatus = PdhBrowseCounters(&pdhBrowseDialogConfigurationBlock); if (pdhStatus == ERROR_SUCCESS || pdhStatus == PDH_DIALOG_CANCELLED) { DWORD dwFlags = (PDH_LOG_WRITE_ACCESS | PDH_LOG_CREATE_ALWAYS); DWORD dwLogType = PDH_LOG_TYPE_CSV; // PDH_LOG_TYPE_PERFMON not supported? Server not responding
by Guest Apollo- 1 reply

Hi, got a very weird thing happening with a new HP server. Every week we need to reboot it as it stops responding. It replies to pings, and you can log on locally (although all you see after entering username and password is a grey screen). Users typically can not log on to the domain in that site and a reboot cures the problem. Have looked through the event logs and absolutely clean. The server room is locked and two other servers are unaffected by this. Any ideas....?

Serial/USB Cable Difficulty
by Guest W. Watson- 1 reply

I have a Belkin serial/usb cable and it works fine most of the time. If I try it with program A, it works fine as com3. If I use it on program B, without A around, as com3, it fails. I bought a Cables Unlimited ser/usb cable, and it fails the same way. It always fails with B. Someone told me that w2k is not quite so friendly with drivers as XP, and that in this instance it may require tampering with BIOS. How to stop share to prompt for credentials

I'm having a problem which no ones seems to resolve. I've been in few forums and no luck. Thus, I hope this forum to be my last one... it is simple... I have a 2003 Ent. SP2 box (let's call it MYBOX) which is a member in a 2003 AD domain. I have a folder which I am sharing on this member server and I want users, coming from different subnets and with PCs not joined to the AD domain where MYBOX, to be able to get into the shares without being prompted for username and password. How can I accomplish this? These are the thing I've already tried: under Configuration >Windows Settings >Security Settings >Local Policies >Security Options: …

I'm MCSE 4.0, but I went developer and everything has been fine for so long that I need some systems advice. I've been networking and using Windows 2000 since release, etc... I want to make this as simple as possible, and I'm sure anyone would understand. i have a BIOS drive C: first channel IDE that is divided into two partitions. C: (primary) and E: (extended data) ... the total is 8GB for the drive C: is a system partition of only 1GB and the E: is the rest of 8GB. C: contains my system files ( NT 2000 Workstation) . This workstation is my life's blood. Please imagine how important this process will be. I need to recombine the C: and E: partit…
