Search function not Searchin'...?
by Guest Kenneth- 10 replies

Howdy, I just reinstalled Win 2000 Pro on one of our systems. Nearly all of its software is loaded, and working properly. A few minutes ago, I needed to locate a particular file on the system, and so, clicked Start | Search. In the appropriate field, I entered *.PST and launched the search. To my surprise, perhaps three seconds later, I saw "Search Completed, no files found" (or some such wording.) It seemed that the search ran with remarkable speed, and I know with certainty that the system had a PST file because it was running Outlook 2000. I assumed that I had entered the search criterion with a typo, and so, tried again, with greater care. …

BigLba problems
by Guest mike000777- 9 replies

Ok I installed a new 320GB HD in Win2k by doing the EnableBigLba registry change and everything worked fine. Two days ago I reinstalled Win2k and of course it didn't recognize the drive above 128MB, nor did it recognize the formatting. So, I did the registry mod again and it still didn't work. I was messing around and made the new drive "active". I confess, I didn't know WHAT I was doing, I was just trying to get it to work. I still dont' know what that does. :( Well I later learned that I needed SP3 or greater for BigLba to work. So, I downloaded SP4 and a rollup, etc etc etc... fully updated and now it still shows the orig 128 MB partition 'active' and an…

I am using ADSL, 2Mbit / s connection. Lately am having much difficulties in downloading big files. Downloading stops at around the point of 50 MByte or so. Just stay there, no error message, just stay there. Nothing. At first I thought it was IE that went nuts. So I tried downloading with FireFox. Same things happen. Then I tried Opera. Same thing ! If I use download manager like WellGet, the file can be downloaded, no problem. But if I try downloading large files with browsers, it just stay there, around 50 MBytes, it didn't say "error" or something, the download line still open, but even if I left it overnight, it still stays there. Dunno what t…

I have an old Sony PC with a Promise hard drive controller, Maxtor hard drive and another (old) hard drive. The promise drivers show on-screen, but halfway through the Win 2000 Pro boot up process the machine stops (blue screen of death) with Inaccessible boot device. Use Chkdsk /f ... I attempted to boot from a floppy or (Win 2000) CD, but that results in a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner. I looked in the BIOS to make the boot order: removable devices, then CD, then hard drive. The floppy I have contains the following hidden files: boot.ini ntdetect.com ntltr I can access the BIOS. It shows the correct time and har…

missing pagefile.sys
by Guest h.stroph- 9 replies

On reboot yesterday, the first in some weeks, Windows 2000 5.00.2195 SP4 encountered the subject: error exactly as described in http://support.microsoft.com/?id=315270 Efforts to follow the remedy stated are meeting difficulties. The pagefile is indeed defined and of size 800-1000 MB , the computer name is "w2k2." as it's been since inception several years ago. The difficulty starts in Step 3-f, as we don't have a "Computer Name" tab in the System Properties dialog, but it's possible to rationalize using the "Network Identification" tab instead, as it's the only possibility that makes sense. The larger difficulty comes in step 4, as there is no "File menu"…

Hi I just had a Raid 1 failure for one of the disks. Is it difficult to change the disk? What are the steps involved? Or should I get a professional for this task? I have the urge to try it out but afraid I might lose all the data. Many thanks in advance for any advice. Richard

Net Framework Initialization Error
by Guest ms- 9 replies

Awhile ago, when Net. 1.1 started to be used for utility installs, I installed Net. 1.1. I no longer use Net-required utilities. This AM, I uninstalled Net 1.1. I used Revo Uninstaller, removed leftover debris from registry. On reboot, now I see a screen: Net Framework Initialization Error, to resolve this install Net.1.1... The screen requires Cancel to continue to load windows. I will not reinstall Net, the invasive nature of Net utilities is why I avoid them. How to remove the screen? It apparently did not uninstall cleanly and Revo did not remove all of it. ms

Paging File
by Guest Sid Elbow- 9 replies
I suspect this is a dumb question but .... I was doing some defragmenting yesterday and elected to have the page-file defragged as part of the process (PerfectDisk 8). It needed to do it at boot time so I re-booted and dutifully sat for 10 - 15 min while the page file was defragged. At this point I began to wonder why this was necessary. I thought the page file was just to offload the system memory when it gets full. Is there any data in the page file that needs to survive a reboot? Could a defrag not consist of simply clearing or deleting/recreating it? (Come to that, couldn't windows itself do that as part of the boot process)?

WinSxS, functional under 2k ?
by Guest Steph- 9 replies
Using windows 2000 Pro SP4. After a reinstall and some cleaning, I noticed I "caught" a winsxs folder, which some research shows to be for use with Windows XP and later side-by-side DLL storage. Was this function somehow retro-fit to Windows 2000 by a Windows update (which I doubt... but safer to ask the experts) ? Am I free to simply delete the contents of the winsxs folder ? Regards -- Steph (no working email)

Access to Network and Dial-Up Connections blocked
by Guest Roger Fink- 9 replies
I am in a losing battle with my IBM laptop over access to Network and Dial-Up Connections (shades of HAL 9000), which it will not let me into come hell or high water from either of the two administrative profiles on this machine. I even created a third administrative profile in an attempt to outsmart it, but access to this is just blocked, period. I'm not sure if the IBM "Access Connections" program on the laptop, which does seem to work, covers the same territory, but I'd like to be able to fix this, which is the only listing in Control Panel I can't open.

Windows can't see large disk... (but used to)...?
by Guest Kenneth- 9 replies
Howdy, I run Win 2000 Pro SP4 on one of my systems, and had in it a 250 gig Western Digital disk that failed. I replaced it with a 500 gig drive, but Windows can only see 127 gig on that disk. Here are the things I am sure of: The bios (the most recent available) sees the disk as 500 gig. The registry has the appropriate 48-Bit LBA Support for ATAPI Disk Drives. I have checked that both by simply viewing the appropriate registry key, and also by running a tool that looks in the registry to see if the key is set correctly. I have partitioned and formatted the disk. I have tried to add another partition, but (beyond the 127 gigs) there is no ext…

Windows 2000 Server StandardEdition /PAE Question
by Guest Microsoft- 9 replies
Hi. I have a Windows 2000 Server Standard Edition, with 4GB of RAM installed. I also have SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition installed on the same server. I'd like Windows to 'see' all $GB of RAM and I've read articles on /PAE, but unfortunately some of these articles imply that Windows 2000 Server Standard Edition cannot use /PAE. So I have a couple of questions that I hope the group can answer: 1) Does Windows 2000 Server Standard Edition only support 2GB of RAM out of the box? 2) Can /PAE be enabled on 2000 Server Standard Edition to allow it to utilize all 4GB? Thanks in advance. PJ.

by Guest mtj7009- 9 replies

All of a sudden, we are unable to RDP to a Windows 2003 Server. It could possible be a windows update that caused the issue but not sure which one. I have run Wireshark to make sure that tcp port 3389 traffic is hitting the server and it is. On the client it says unable to connect to RDP. Short of rebuilding the server are there any options or troubleshooting steps i should take? Windows Server 2003 SP2. Firewall is off completely. Thanks

Hi to all, for some reason my Compact Drive labels changed to xm/sd and I can't change them back. the other drives in my folders give me the option to rename, and the general tab in the properties box of the other drives allow a label change but not the CD labels. I have tried this in both the folders list and the 'my computer' box. I also tried to change it in the registry with the same results. (I restored the registry) thanks to all for your suggestions, bob

Can't revert to "Show Hidden Folders"
by Guest rubyjack- 9 replies

I have previously posted this problem, but now I have some new info. As the subject says, I can't revert to "Show Hidden Folders." I have gone into Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>View> and ticked "Show Hidden Files and Folders -On." Everyone suggested that I check this first. However, when I was poking around in the registry I found the following settings. It seems to me that they are not correct for showing hidden folders. I have played around with them some, but to no avail. I thought someone more knowledgeable than me might spot a problem. Thanks for any help, Dan Hacker Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Softwar…

Multi Boot Problem
by Guest Sid Elbow- 9 replies
My first hard drive looks like this (in sequence): - Partition-1 ... Primary partition OS Win2K-1 - Partition-2 ... Primary partition, empty, formatted - Partition-3 ... Extended partition containing two data drives - partition 4 ... Primary partition OS Win2K-2 All this works fine as a multi-boot. I'm trying to install XP to the empty partition (Partition-2). The install goes fine, the XP partition is added to the boot menu and XP and Win2K-2 are both bootable. However, Win2K-1 on Partition-1 fails to boot with the error message: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM Any ideas?
