We use to be a Novell network for years and years. For the past 5 years we were running 70 stations on Windows 2000 Pro with no issues. In March we switched over to a Windows 2003 server network. Our main DC we installed 64bit Windows 2003 SP2. All the stations stayed unchanged other than we had to create new profiles on the domain. All the stations ran fine for weeks then about a month after the switch over we had a handful of stations when the user's logged on a new profile was automatically created for them. When the server switch- over was done the new user profiles were all "U_Username", they did not show up as the usual "U_Username.domainname". When t…

Not Saving User Settings?
by Guest Reid- 1 reply

In restoring a single, multi-user, desktop computer seem to have somehow locked the desktop and start menus of all the users. Any changes the users make to their desktops or start menus are not saved after they log out. The recycle bins do not "work" either. Dragging a an icon onto a recycle bin doesn't work. The bin does not become highlighted and the dragged icon ends up resting atop the bin's icon. View settings in windows explorer, internet option advanced ticks aren't saved either. Thanks.

Microsoft's Internet Information Services (IIS) has come a very long way since its beginning both in terms of stability and performance. IIS 6.0, which is the latest and greatest version of IIS, rolls out with Windows Server 2003. How does it compare with earlier versions? Have the knowledge... http://it-techexperts.com/MCSE/GAIIS014.asp

Program dominates screen, wants to always be "on top"
by Guest jbclem- 1 reply

I have a stock market real time program that is very annoying in the way that it wants to be always "on top". While I can understand needing some priority when live real time data is coming in (during market hours), other similar programs don't have this problem. What I am talking about it that if I am in another program, the click on the desktop icon...this program will pop up on top. Same when I'm switching from one program to another one (which this real time program is running). Most obnoxiously, when I'm closing down this program (it takes 1-2 minutes), I can't do anything else because everytime I switch to another program this one will pop up "on top". …

Repeat on boot-up
by Guest William- 1 reply

Hey all...I have a kind of old HP at home with Windows 2000 Pro. I ran a virus scan the other day and found I had infected .dll files that couldn't be repaired. I chose to delete some of them, stupidly, and now the system goes into a loop when I power on. It shows the HP logo, then the WIndows 2000 loading screen (the bar fills up all the way), and then a blue screen and repeats over and over again. The F8 options do nothing. Is there any way around this without having to reinstall Windows, because it wasn't mine and therefore don't have the reinstall software. Thanks!

Our Domain Controller is requesting certificates every minute to our old CA (which isn't a CA anymore). How can I determine what is causing these requests? The requests are failing with the Message: "Denied by policy module 0x80094800, The request for a cerificate template that is not supported by the Certificate Services policy: Domain Controller." Moving user to new domain
by Guest maitakeboy- 1 reply

I have small regional offices that are configured as separate domains from my headquarters, all in the same forest, though. I have configured logon scripts in each of those domains to map network drives. Each of them are, of course, different. When I move a user from one office to the other, is there any way to get them to use the logon script besides moving them from one domain to the other? And is using the ADMT the only way to move the user, besides deleting and recreating the account in the new domain? Obviously, this is a problem because it also deletes the email account. If ADMT if the only or preferred way, what are the specific instructions for ju…

Hi Everyone, I just reformatted a PC with WIndows 2000 and now I, for some reason, am getting the following error: WinMgmt. exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created. Does anyone know the cause of this? Or perhaps the solution? I've read other feeds mentioning a virus but I JUST reformatted (an hour ago) and have only accessed the internet to run Microsoft updates and install Firefox. any help you can give is greatly appreciated!!! Thanks, Angela

Windows 2000 Processes get shortened
by Guest USN9AWM@gmail.com- 1 reply

I am using Nagios and nsclient to monitor an old windows 2000 box. I am using the check to pull the process list, and verify if an .exe is being executed. On one of my Windows 2000 Server machines, I get false negatives. A service is started, and the executable name is something like longservicename.exe. When I log in, the service is running. If I pull up task manager, I see "longservic" and that's it. So its causing my check to fail. Any reason Windows 2000 is cutting the process name short??

Windows 2000 Pro reboots after shutdown
by Guest hemlockgrove- 1 reply

Running Windows 2000 Pro SP4 on Pentium II 233Mhz. All storage peripherals are SCSII. After installing older version of Backup Exec (V4.0 (OEM)) that came with Seagate tape drive, whenever I try to shutdown, it goes thru normal shutdown process and then reboots rather than powering down the computer. If I go to Control Panel | Power Options | APM tab, Enable Advanced Power management checkbox is checked. Unchecking that does not show "it's now safe to shut down computer", but still reboots. I know that I had this same version of Windows 2k pro install with same Backup Exec running & it shut down & powered off properly, although the sequence of ins…

only some IP clients fail with gethostbyname: unknown error, butbrowsers & nslookup fine... Greetings On Windows 2000, using putty, or the flashfxp ftp flient, we started getting the message, "gethostbyname: unknown error" when attempting to connect to any host, using fqdn, or ip, same error results. This just started out of the blue, and was not an issue before. These clients had worked fine for years. The strange thing is that from the same machine, we can access any web site via any browser. Also, when using the command prompt we can ftp into the any site that flashfxp could before. nslookup works fine too, making it even stranger, is it som…

HELP - Corrupted User Accounts?
by Guest Tom- 1 reply

On my Windows 2000 Pro laptop with my HD partitioned as C: and D:, I just repartitioned the D: drive to give me more space using V-COM's Partition Commander (I booted from the PC CD). While using the boot CD, I saw a menu item labelled "Change SID". I figured that it would present me with a dialog that would show the present SID for my hard drive. However, I got an hourglass and I guess it must have changed it without asking - damn! After booting, I logged in as a Administrator and did some disk defragging (DiskKeeper). I also installed the lastest MS updates using Windows Update (except for the .NET updates). Horror of horrors, I've lost my non-Administra…
