Opening and saving files
by Guest Ray K- 1 reply

In the good old days (up until about three weeks ago), when I went to open or save a file, the dialog box would display the existing folders in alphabetical order, followed by files in alphabetical order. Now, with some programs, the dialog box shows the files and folders (in the list view) in what appears to be in random order. While the dialog box is in view, if I click on View Menu, choose Details, then click on the Name column, the folders will appear first in alpha order, followed by the files in alpha order, just as I want. But the next time I try opening or saving a file, the dialog box doesn't remember my last settings, but reverts to showing fi…

nVidia drivers for Windows 2000
by Guest phantom- 1 reply

Did nVidia stop making drivers for Windows 2000? I've noticed the latest driver for my video card (a GeForce 7900 GTO) is from May, last year: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_94.24_2.html Exploring their list of 8xxx series video cards reveals they have never released drivers for Windows 2000 for that entire line of cards. Following ATI's example, they are just moving away from the last good Windows operating system, now only supporting Windows XP and Vista (my previous ATI Radeon card's official drivers were last released in February 2006). Are these companies choosing the right path in ditching Windows 2000? Alot of people still use it. I bet nVidia ge…

Upgrading..
by Guest phantom- 0 replies

I'm planning on updating my computer, and want some opinions and/or suggestions. Note that I am an Intel/ATI person, although considering how AMD bought ATI you might be able to convince me to choose nVidia (although I didn't leave Google even though they partnered with AOL <.<). Currently I am on: 2.6 GHz Pentum 4 1.5 GB DDR RAM (I think it's 400 MHz) 256 MB ATI RADEON 9550 AGP video card http://beatme101.com/images/xblade.jpg An old, but still quite good 17 inch Compaq FS740 monitor that maxes at 1280*1024*32@60. I have 3 hard drives, which I plan to transfer to the new rig. They're fast drives (all 7200 RPM), 2 IDE and 1 SATA. ~740 GB (40 + 300…

Upgrading windows 2000 forest to windows 2003
by Guest guv- 0 replies
I am looking into upgrading our windows 2000 domain and forest to windows 2003 native domain and forest. We have 2 windows 2000 domains, I have run the adprep command in our root domain. I have other questions regarding our servers: 1. We have 1 windows 2000 domain controller. Its also a windows 2000 TS licensing server and a DNS server. I want to demote this server by using dcpromo as I dont want to upgrade this to a wiindows 2003 domain controller, I want to leave it as standard windows 2000 server. The question is, is there any issues with demoting a DC. Also once demoted will it still run as a DNS server and a terminal licensing server. We h…

Power Saver in Display fails often
by Guest nesredep egrob- 0 replies

Just a bit annoying that I have to reset the power saver from time to time - in fact very often. When I set it - it will usually work 2-3 times and then pack in with the screen showing as I return. Unfortunately the Acronis backups I have are endowed with the same trouble - I suppose that I might have to reinstall OS but really I do not want to do that if it can be helped. Print dialog too big
by Guest bomberer4@yahoo.com- 0 replies
I recently added a new printer to my W2K machine. I'm not sure if this is the cause of my problem or not . . . When I try to print from OutlookExpress 6 the print dialog is too big to fit on the screen. I'm running 800x600 due to vision problems. The print dialog has changed recently: the border of the entire box is now much larger than necessary to contain the elements within. As such, there is quite of bit of flat gray area to the right the information/setup areas and between the Page Range/Number of copies areas and the Print/Cancel/Apply buttons (they are off the bottom of the screen.) The print dialog in MS Word does not have this problem. Anyone k…

Exchange 2000 Send As permission
by Guest Krykino- 0 replies
I'm using windows server and exchange 2000. In order to have the send as permission for user A on mailbox of user B, I go to AD, search for user B's user account and under security tab, add user A and selected the send as permission and restarted the information store. After half an hour, I realized that the user A is not in the list anymore. I thought that I didn't add into it. So I repeated the same step again and again and the same thing happen. Why will this thing happen? The user A will keep on disappear from the list and i need to add it manually. "Allow inheritable permissions from parent to propagate to this object" is not selected. Any help would …

File handling question for Dave Patrick!
by Guest JR- 0 replies

Thanks for help on Cd's - message on that post but, one you may be able to help with for a chap across the water from you in Watchet. This win2kpro machine has a couple of 16bit applications (Corel 5 is one) and when using the 'file open' command, there are no drive letters shown in the drive box. If full path typed into file name box, finds file OK. All other programs with 32 bit use a different file open box and are fine. Tried old registries and no difference. Do you know what files/dll/reg entries control this 16 bit open box and how they find drive lists??? Just a nuisance fault but would love to find what caused it!!!!!

File Ownership
by Guest Triage- 0 replies

We have several GB of used space unaccounted for on one of our volumes on a W2K server. When the dir tool is run with the /Q switch, a line of 3 periods (...) appear where the owner entries should be. Is there a solution for this? Also, instead of dir, I'd love to use the fileowners.pl tool. However, I cannot seem to locate it within any of Microsoft's resources. Please advise. Thanks! -- "I enjoyed my youth so much that I decided to bring it along with me." -G.C.

File Synch won't stop for deleted profile
by Guest JPW5345- 0 replies

My Windows XP notebook at one time had a user profile of UserA. He has been deleted. I have gone into Offline Folders and manually deleted any and all files related to him. When my machine synchs when connected to the network, it synchs my local files to my home directory on a Windows2k server. This is good. However, it continues to synch UserA's files to his home directory. I have enven hacked my laptop registery to delete references to Usera. What reference to him might remain on my laptop? How do I stop it from synching with his home directory? -- Thank you. John

DCOM error. The Diskeeper Module DkService.exe has reported the error "The remote procedure call failed and did not execute. Hi Folks; I have Diskeeper installed on Windows 2000 AdvSrvr. Whenever it defrags the system I get this error; DCOM error. The Diskeeper Module DkService.exe has reported the error "The remote procedure call failed and did not execute."(0x800706bf) while calling SetData on clsid {00130608-0000-0000-0002-000001000000} This error occurs on any Windows 2000 Server I install the program on. I realize that this is actually a Diskeeper problem but if anyone could help me resolve it I would be eternally grateful. Thanks! Dave

Recycle bin - interesting problems
by Guest JR- 0 replies
After a recent crashed install of norton systemworks, completely lost the recycle bin - probably from a lot of manually deleted registry entries. Couldn't use the registry backup just before the install as it would not ''find'' the keyboard (even though device present). ugh? Could create shortcut to re/bin but showed as hidden and could be edited.... Went through earlier registry and exported all the keys relating to th re/bin on the desktop (namespace and the clsid entries) and imported to current registry. Now have desktop re/bin back with full and proper function. However, do NOT have same in explorer view. For example, rename desktop re/bin t…

HIstory Folder Issue
by Guest Mike MIlano- 0 replies
I am very puzzled by the lack of items in the history folder; both internet sites visited and other docs. I open IE 6 and only sometimes i see some of the sites that I have visited but most of the time it is empty. And if it does shjow something, I open another instance of IE and there there won't be anything there!! Strange. I have seen after some search that maybe the History folder is corrupt and needs deleting, I tried that but I cannot do it obviously becasue it is a system folder, and even if I log on as the administrator, and so a different user, and insure that the folder is shared, it will give me an error message that it cannot be deleted as it …
