After I type a few characters on the Windows 2000 DOS shell, pressing the <tab> key does not expand for more characters to complete my typing. Using the same procedure, i.e. pressing the <tab> key on the Windows XP DOS shell will expand for more characters to complete my typing. Please help to fix my Windows 2000 DOS shell tab key problem. Thanks.

Windows Time Service
by Guest Mark Blain- 7 replies

I've got an old standalone pc with a dead RTC battery running Win2K Pro. I'm migrating off of it, so it's not worth replacing the battery. Since I have an always-on internet connection, I thought it would be educational to enable the Windows Time Service and set the time on each boot instead. My firewall is allowing SNTP and I'm connecting successfully to tick.usno.navy.mil, but on startup, my event log says "Attempt to set time which differs by more than 12 hours aborted". How can I set the time on boot with the built-in service despite the large difference due to my dead RTC clock? I have a workaround using a third-party utility, but this is bugg…

Show Desktop does not work
by Guest Todd Cary- 7 replies

By mistake I tried to install an older version of Sim Town on my Win 2K computer and the "Show Desktop" no longer works. The Microsoft site mentions this problem, however I have followed their instructions along with other suggestions and there appears to be something else missing. I even reinstalled IE. One suggestion was to use this command: REGSRV32 /n /i:U shell32. I used that and it did produce the icon, but clicking on it does nothing (it's contents agree with other documentation I have found). What other process could be missing? Many thanks.... Todd

Scanreg for Windows 2000?
by Guest John John (MVP)- 7 replies
No, Windows 2000 does not have a similar utility. To back up your registry create an Emergency Repair Disk (ERD) and select to backup the registry at the same time. Keep your ERD up to date, when you do major changes to your system create a new ERD. John DaffyD® wrote: > Windows 98 had a DOS utility--I think it was scanreg--for returning to a > previous good copy of the registry. Does this also come with W2K?

Best NTFS Cluster Size for boot drive?
by Guest Tony- 7 replies
My Windows 2000 Pro laptop has a c: partition and a separate D: partition.for data. I've been searching for a reference on the best cluster size for a Win2K partition, but can't find anything. The C: partition is a 12G NTFS partition with a 512 byte cluster size. Would 2K be a more desirable cluster size for faster performance? Thanks!!!

How to install Win2000 on e: after installing XP64 on c:
by Guest Zootal- 7 replies
I have XP64 installed on my c: partition. I want to install win2000 on my e: partition, which is a 30GB ntfs partition. I did so, and 3/4 through the install it locked up. I rebooted, and it was unable to continue the install. So, I booted back to XP, and much to my surprise, I get a Win2000 could not start error. My boot.ini seems to be intact. As near as I can tell, the Win2000 install to e: wiped my XP install on c:. Is this a known issue with win2000? Was I just lucky (un)? I'm thinking I should install Win2000 first, then XP.

C:\ partition with a interemittent bad sector
by Guest jbclem- 7 replies

My WIn2000 PIII computer has 2 hard drives and 2 Win2000 installations (C: ands E:). So I can always boot up in E: when this intermittent problem happens. There seems to be a bad hard drive sector near or at the beginning of the C: and when it's bad I can't boot up in C: . I can run Partition Table Doctor's surface test(from E:) and spot the bad sector, and today when it happened I couldn't access anything on C:, and My Computer was showing zero bytes on C:. I could still access other partitions on that hard drive, D: and E:. Usually when this happens I can't boot up in C: but I can access files in that partition so I assumed that the problem was only in the …

Wireless PCI adapter for Windows 2000
by Guest void.no.spam.com@gmail.com- 7 replies
- 510 views
I am looking for a wireless PCI adapter that supports WPA on Windows 2000. Since Windows 2000 does not have the Wireless Zero Configuration service like XP does, then the wireless PCI adapter needs to come with its own utility that lets you use WPA. I also would like the adapter's software to run as a Windows service (as opposed to running only when a user logs in) - that way the system can respond to pings or share requests if no one is logged in. The software should also allow limited user accounts to use the wireless connection. Any recommendations?

Moving from W2k to XP with a Big HD
by Guest W. Watson- 7 replies

Back in August I had some concerns about installing W2K on a modern motherboard and a large SATA hardrive (HD). After getting some help here, I summarized the process as below. However, I just left the HD size as W2K had set it, and did not use any tool to increase the size to it's full size. I'm now going to move the OS up to XP. Will it do this for me? If not, what's a recommended way to get XP to use the full capacity of the HD? =============Basics on How to Install W2K================ Rev. Aug. 18, 2007 I've learned a bit more about this, and it's reflected in this revision post. [start of an Aside on How This Got Started] Learned from various so…

How to cancel a CHKDSK /F in progress?
by Guest void.no.spam.com@gmail.com- 7 replies
- 415 views
If I am doing a chkdsk /f, and the power goes out, I will have a few minutes to shut down the system before my UPS battery runs out. How do I gracefully stop the chkdsk process? Let's say I'm running the chkdsk from the recovery console. What if I'm not doing it from the recovery console, but I had scheduled it to run during a restart? Would it be possible to stop it gracefully in that situation?

Reboot?
by Guest Sid Elbow- 7 replies

I have an odd situation that may (or may not) be related to my Win2K configuration. I run AVG antivirus on 4 machines all with Win2K. AVG is set to update automatically each day. Recently, on one machine only, the update software is demanding a machine reboot to complete the update. It didn't used to do this and none of the other machines do it and they are all receiving the same updates. This leads me to believe it's a difference in OS configuration which is necessitating this reboot. It's a minor nuisance but does anyone have any idea what might affect this?

Windows Update
by Guest V Green- 7 replies

So, I haven't updated my laptop for years (literally). I'm an MSDN member, so I got SP's that way. I am already at SP4. I just checked in with Windows Update, and, of course, the Win Update stuff was out of date, so I let it update. When I rebooted, the dreaded Automatic Update service was turned back ON, so I quickly turned it OFF and disabled it - Auto Update is a DISASTER - foisting off things like WMP 11 as "critical" when it is not (not to mention that WMP 11 is just a POS downgrade from WMP 10 as well). Of course, visiting the Windows Update site now results in a 0x8DDD0018 error. I am NOT gonna let Auto Update download stuff and THEN ask me …

Slow startup
by Guest Don Eilenberger- 7 replies

Folks, one of my W2K Servers (running DNS and AD) has started taking 30 minutes to complete the "Starting Windows 2000" screen. The activity bar at the bottom moves at normal speed to about 2/3rds done - then it sits there for almost exactly 30 minutes and finally completes and W2K starts. Any ideas? It didn't always do this. BTW - configuration includes 2 network cards, one for our internal network (192.168.0.subnet) the other for outside connectivity to our T1 connection. The server runs one basic program - MailTraq - which is our mail server software. Any ideas?

Logon Help Needed
by Guest Sturdy- 7 replies
Hi all, After a bout with operator head space, I have managed to make my dual-boot W2k Pro box unbootable. Now when I try to logon, the logon dialog returns after a few seconds. Oddly both OS present the same issue so it is likely related to a common cause. Here is some additional info: 1) I had re-sized partitions on physical drive 0 when this happened (using GPartEd). Somehow my old C: is now F:. The new C: is an old data drive (I:). No partitions were moved, just deleted or resized. I can boot into F: using a modified boot.ini on a boot floppy but it comes back to the logon. 2) I also resized partions on drive 1 where both OS shared a swap file. On…

by Guest Michael- 7 replies

Hi I have downloaded SP4 and am trying to install it on a laptop that does not have web access (yet!). The process stops with a setup error telling me to go to the W2k Service Pack Web site and select the 'Problems Downloading the Service Pack'. Apparently, I can get information about downloading a version of the service pack that does not need a Web connection. I CAN'T EVEN FIND THE SP WEB SITE!!! Can anyone help an aging newbie please? Best wishes Michael

Antivirus program won't let me disable automatic service
by Guest jbclem- 7 replies
Antivirus programs usually set up services(such as updating) so that they start up when Win2000 starts up and run automatically. I always stop these from running and switch them from automatic to manual. Today I updated my Avast antivirus, and it's found a way to prevent me from changing or disabling two services that it wants at startup. In other words, it's taken control of my computer away from me. Before I uninstall this arrogant program, can someone help me figure out how to undo this. What happens is that when I go into the Microsoft Management Console, and look in the Properties for either of these services, I can change the "startup type" from automati…
