I have a W2K server that I am trying to maintain for the next 2 years. I am considering buying a spare server to cannibalize for parts if I need to. Can I replace the system board if it fails with my spare without reinstalling Windows ? What would I need to do ?

Mysterious "invisible" folder
by Guest Ray K- 7 replies
I was infected with a virus that put over 22,000 ZIP files in a folder called c:\...\Fonts\', which I found by using Search to detect the *.ZIP files. (Note the apostrophe following Fonts\; it's the folder name, not a typo on my part.) Yet when I tried navigating to that folder using Explorer, I couldn't find any subfolders of Fonts. I have Folder Options/View set to "Show hidden files and folders" and do NOT have the "Hide protected operating system files" box checked. So why won't Explorer show the Fonts subfolder that Search found? Thanks, Ray

Hello, I have applications developed in CLIPPER and they were developed in DOS. In Windows98 there were commands to charge the OS in high memory to run DOS programs. Commands like: DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS /TESTMEM:OFF DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE AUTO RAM DOS=HIGH DEVICEHIGH /L:1,15872 =C:\DOS\DISPLAY.SYS CON=(EGA,,1) But in Windows XP how that works?... Now, i'm having problems running such applications... Any ideias will be appreciated. Thanks, Nuno Gomes

How to automate Network Password on bootup?
by Guest zeke7- 6 replies
After installing the Gmail Notifier tool, every time I reboot my Windows 2000 Pro, the "Enter Network Password" menu pops up awaiting a response from me. My username and password are filled in in the menu cells just fine, but I still need to click the button to get logged on and close out the popup window before I can see my desktop in its entirety. Is there a way to automate this procedure so I don't have to click the Log-on button and instead have the window close out automatically? I'd like to be able to boot up and see my desktop, not a menu awaiting action from me. Thanks for any suggestions.

Hard Drive
by Guest MichaelN- 6 replies

I have an old computer with 2 hard drives running Windows 2000. I believe they are both SCSI. My C: drive is a Healthy Boot NTFS (Disk 0) and working fine. It is only 9.32 GB. I said it was old! My other drive (Disk 1) is the problem. Part of it is Healthy (active) with a primary partition of 9.32 GB. It is mirroring my c: drive. It has no drive letter assigned to it. The rest of the Disk 1 drive is 47.9 GB and contains some important storage files that I would like to access (but not enough to spend the $$$ for data recovery, as I have backups of the important ones). It used to be my d: drive, but something happened and it no longer shows up in Wi…

Reboot / Restart --- continuously
by Guest dvandusen- 6 replies
I have a continuous reboot/restart on a W2K server after an update. The boot process goes past the bios, then the boot up of the loader (the ........... at the bottom of the screen when allowing an F8), then through the windows 2k load (the splash screen with windows 2k with a progress bar at the bottom), past the keyboard initialization (the lights on the shift led's), through the final splash screen, and to the change to the light blue screen where the pointer is supposed to show. It restarts after 2 seconds, just before the point where the pointer icon displays. There are no devices on this machine other than a Raid card that is/was working fine. Th…

W2K Defrag Exclusions
by Guest Roger Fink- 6 replies
In order to defragment my hard drive I need to exclude the file gobackio.bin (the file Goback writes to, which takes up 10% of the drive space). I can do this for my Fix-It Utilities defrag program, but I haven't been able to figure out how to do it with the OS System Tools defrag program, which I think is a better choice here. How do I do this?

Hi Hope someone can point me in the right ditrection. I have 5 W2K server (all fully patches), DC1 & DC2, then three member servers - 1 running exchange, 2 running 3rd party apps. I have been having an issue on the Exchange server with the Exchange services failing to start. I change the services to manaul start, reboot and then start services manually, seemed to sort things out. Not really a situation I want to embrace after server running OK for over three years so I have been trying to track down the cause but the issue has been getting worse whilst going through this process. I am now in a situation when I cannot start the services at a…

Still unable to connect to XP
by Guest Ian D Samson- 6 replies

My main computer is running Windows 2000 Pro SP4. My standby/new machine runs XP Home. While I can see the computer in the list of computers, I cannot connect to it because it says it is unable to connect to the workgroup 'home' - the name I have given the workgroup on both machines. Both machines are connected via 100Mbps Ethernet Cat5 cable to a router, the router is connected to the internet via ADSL line. I have set up each Drive C for sharing and set the correct permissions, but when I type \\<pc name> on my machine, I get an error, and when I type \\<mymachinename> on the other PC, I also get an error. Is there something inherently wrong with tr…

Windows 2000: missing CD/DVD drive
by Guest Turkk- 6 replies
I've posted this before but it seems to have gotten lost. Neither the CD-drive nor the DVD-RW drive are showing in Windows Explorer, & they don't work. I've recently uninstalled several programs (including iTunes), but don't know exactly which uninstall caused the problem (if that is what caused it). Have tried all the usual troubleshooting, uninstall/reinstall, etc. I see several posts for a solution to this problem for Windows XP, but can't find one for Window 2000 Professional. What do I need to do? If it involves using Regedit, please direct me to proper steps for backing up, restoring, etc. Many thanks. -- Turkk

Strange Case of the Disappearing Partition.
by Guest Sid Elbow- 6 replies
My second IDE HD (160 GB) has but two (primary) partitions (both NTFS): DATA ... 8 GB BIGSPACE ... the remainder (EnableBigLBA is set) It's been running happily for a couple of years until yesterday or today when the BIGSPACE partition disappeared. In Disk-Manager it just showed up as "unallocated" space. The data on it wasn't especially crucial (and in any case I recovered about 90% of it with a file recovery program) so I thought ho-hum and proceeded to recreate and format the partition. This went fine, the partition was created with no reported errors. Then I rebooted and the partition was gone again! I've tried creating the partition both …

I'm running a WIN 2000 PC with a wireless connection to Internet via a private wireless WLAN router and an ADSL modem. To the same WLAN is connected a MS Vista LapTop as well. Until recently, I was able to see the Vista LapTop computer name under My Computer - Computers Near Me and My Network Places - Entire Network - Microsoft Windows Network - Workgroup but now, all I get is an error window message showing : "Workgroup is not accessible. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently avialable." What can I do to in order to be able to access the other computer via the WLAN ? How to change Windows Explorer's default directory?
by Guest baobob@my-deja.com- 6 replies

In Windows Explorer, the Explorer Bar displays Folders. Every time I launch Explorer, "Local Disk (C:)" is selected and expanded, which I don't want. I want some other default location under My Computer to be expanded. But I can't find any place in the UI to do that. Where do you specify default directory in Windows Explorer? Thanks. ***

Yes, if you go to the Appearances tab and select Icons from the drop down, you cant set the font size (and the font itself) there. .... and registry cleaners are frowned upon around here :-)

Event Viewer Errors
by Guest Sid Elbow- 6 replies
I'm getting a couple of persistent event viewer errors lately: An application error: " WMI ADAP was unable to load the ASP.NET_2.0.50727 performance library because it returned invalid data: 0x0 " A system error: " The ASInsHelp service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified. " I don't know if these two are related (I suspect not because the first has been going on for much longer than the second). I haven't noticed anything untoward with the system operation, but can anyone shed any light on these, whether they are critical and how I might avoid them?

Major Startup Problems
by Guest Ray K- 6 replies

Probably due to the win32.agent.cmn virus that got me earlier today, despite using several programs to remove it, including SpyBot, I can't boot properly, Once I get past the splash screen, I see the desktop and all the icons. But once all the startup items are loaded, I see a series of newly opening dialog boxes that say c:\WINNT\Syustem32\command.com. After dozens open within about 45 seconds, I get an Program Error dialog box that says "explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You need to restart the program." Hitting Cancel closes this box, but I'm left with original dozens of boxes. If I use Task Manager to try to close them, I eve…

installing w2k alongside Vista
by Guest aa- 6 replies

I have a brand new HP computer with Windows Vista pre-installed. I need also w2k on the same mashine. I made a peimary partition using Vista built in Desk Manager. Now I have booted from w2k cd. Now I remembered from my experience with w2k-XP installations on one computer that they both use NTDETECT and NTLOADER files and is w2k is installed after XP, the XP would not boot because NTDETECT and NTLOADER installed by w2k are not compatible with XP. Questions: 1. Is it OK to have both Vista and w2k onthe same mashine? 2. Does Vista use NTDETECT and NTLOADER ? If it does, where do they reside so that I could back them up? I failed to find them, but this is…

I am trying to obtain a copy of Windows 2003 service pack 1 for installation on my 2003 server. When I use windwos update, it only has an option for Service Pack 2 which I do not want to install at this time. Is there a way to force it to ignore service pack 2 and show Service pack 1?? OR does someone have a link to where I can downlaod SP1 from?? Many thanks, Brad
