Off topic to this NG

Scanning problems, old system, Dell 4100, ME, IE6 SP1. 3rd party issue with Visioneer 6100, USB connected with Paperport 6.1software. Problem just started with no changes to the system. Scans do not work in black/white mode from TWAIN tool dialog box. Grayscale & color is OK, meaning scanning a B/W article in the color or grayscale mode scans OK, but not in the B/W mode. Been using the system for 7 yrs without problems. Unless someone in this NG could have tips, could someone point me to a techie message board? tia

screen images and font distorted
by Guest ckg1971- 3 replies
When I turned on my computer today, the size of desktop screen was distorted--everything---icons, font and screensaver pic all look stretched out width ways. And it is the same with all screens I open--internet explorer, all websites, e-mail etc. I have to keep scrolling over on the internet now to see the full screen because it is all stretched out! I have no idea why this suddenly happened or how to change it back! I would be very grateful for any input.

problem in running DOS program under windows ME
by Guest khanikim@gmail.com- 3 replies
Hi, I have an old DOS program which runs fine in every version of Windows EXCEPT WindowsME !. The error box I get is here : "This program has performad an illegal operation and will be terminated.Quit all programs and then restart your ...." and it also shows under its details button : "The program encountered a general protection exception Fault location 10F0:0138 Interrupts in service: None" Thus, it leads me to believe that WindowsME does not do as good of job translating the FAT 32 stuff into compatible FAT16 calls needed by the DOS program. Is there any cure other than dumping WindowsME and putting a different version on all the new machines? …

Using USB Intelligent Stick with laptop (Windows ME)
by Guest bgormley- 3 replies
I'm not sure what the problem is but I've been trying to transfer an Access database to my Windows ME laptop from my desktop using a GE Intelligent Stick USB device. I have Office 2000 installed on the laptop so it has Access 2000 on the laptop. So why can't I open the database when I try to? I keep getting the message 'c:\ohiotraders_be.mdb' is not a valid path, etc. I've tried opening it from the E drive (the external device) and also from the C drive, where I've saved it. Maybe someone will have an answer for this. I want to be able to take this database on the road with me.

Boot Up Problem with Win ME (AV Related?)
by Guest Ben Alias- 3 replies
I have a friend who has an older computer, running Win ME. He has left town to go to Chicago, but in the mean time a 21-year-old intern has come to live at his place and needs to use his computer. His computer had an old version of Norton AV on it, which was not updated since 2004. So I advised the intern, Ellen, to remove Norton and install AVG instead. She does this. Unfortunately, she is not a computer-savvy person, and previously had only used Macs and XP machines. So, sometime after installing AVG and perhaps after installing Firefox, she starts getting these error messages, which she basically ignores. One of these messages said something about ins…

Slow XP Computer
by Guest jeremiah wright- 3 replies
Most of us have a slow XP computer. We bought it recently, and have done nothing in the way of keeping it cleaned. We have bigger hard drives, so we store more stuff. And the more stuff we store, the larger the chance is we are getting bogged down. And since we are always deleting files, creating new files, installing software, and uninstalling software, we are going to have some issues where the computer gets overloaded with the data on it, and the result is a slow XP computer. Good news, though! There is a simple fix. But before I tell you about it, let me go over some of the typical solutions you may hear. Update the Windows system: You should do this. But th…

How Come I Need A Registry Cleaner For My Windows Computer?
by Guest jeremiah wright- 3 replies
You need a registry cleaner for your windows computer because of the numerous errors, which occur from registry problems. You see, the registry is the place where your computer stores the configuration information about your computer and your installed programs so that your operating system can use them. It is the basic blue print, or directions, for your computer. So, if these get messed up, you are in trouble. To steer clear of these types or problems, keep a registry cleaner for your windows computer installed at all times. Maintaining the windows registry is an important step in keeping your computer healthy and running error free. Registry problems can inclu…

Changed .exe files
by Guest Gary Waterbury- 3 replies

I attempted to reinstall Windows ME from the Options direstory in Windows and then all my .exe files became .lnk files. I cannot rerun Setup.exe nor Restore nor run any .exe file. I cannot connect to the Internet. The good news is, I can boot up in Safe mode or Regular mode. And I can view pictures by right clicking on a file and clicking Open With -> Irfanview. The same with .htm files Open With -> Internet Explorer. I can't open .html files. My file associations must be deleted. I need to associate .exe files with a program to run them. A Ubuntu disk works ok, but I don't want to install it because it won't access the Internet. And it erases my hard disk. …
