Re: The Color 'Red' is missing
by Guest webster72n- 2 replies

Re: The Color 'Red' is missing FIPO: The missing color red was not the cause of my failing monitor, but the setting 'without restart after a color change', which can affect certain programs, in this case the display itself, triggered the discrepancy. Choosing to restart after a color change instead, eliminated my problem entirely on the spot. Quite a learning experience, when considering it worked for so long. Thanks for all positive contributions. Harry.

The newer ver. 4.1 of SpywareBlaster is available. Recommended course of action: 1. Download ver. 4.1. 2. Disable all protection of ver. 4.0. 3. Uninstall ver. 4.0 via Add/Remove Programs. 4. Install ver. 4.1 and enjoy. A request for donations is always attached. Harry.

Hi again, It's been a while since I re-installed ME. Full install, not an upgrade. I was trying to recall if you have to Activate ME with Microsoft? Did it have that requirement back then or was this introduced with 2000 or XP? Please advise. Thanks! Lynn

by Guest Nicdig- 2 replies

Hi, I have an older pc running ME. One day i was just exploring this unit and found a way to change the 'sounds' on it. I chose the 'animal' type sounds. But I just want to go back to defaults or other sounds of my choosing. I hate these monkey, tiger, jungle type sounds every time I click with my mouse somewhere for a command. ANy ideas? I am used to using my xp pc's and cant remember what I did with this one. NOTE* THis never bothered me before, but i unmuted my pc to listen to music and remembered that I still have these annoying sounds. THanks in advance

windows ME 'died'
by Guest Marcy- 2 replies

Ok, I had a spare Windows ME pc Emachines tower that I was handed down to me. After having used it spareingly for 2 years, it died; we had a black out and I think the machine fried because it was not on a surge protect outlet. But the machine was off. Anyways, before I part it out, or store it, or trash it, I want to remove the hardrive to ensure security. This pc was not used but for occasional surfing but i did make a few payments on it and saved the pages to "my documents".... So my question is what do I remove to ensure that no documents, pictures, or anything compromising stays on the computer? I already know how to open the tower but dont really k…

USB Jump Drive
by Guest Al- 2 replies

I have a Gateway Performance 500 computer about 8 years old and using ME . I would like to start using a Jump memory drive (I don’t know the mfg.) After I installed the Jump memory drive and restarted the computer, I got a message that said “cmdnist caused an error in user.exe.” I found the USB disk and clicked on update driver, but I don’t know what to enter. I would like to find a new driver (free, I hope) that I could use. I would appreciate any help I can get? Thanks

Ugrading from Windows ME to XP
by Guest laura- 2 replies

I gave my stepmother an old computer. The computer originally had Windows 98 on it and upgraded it to XP Home addition. She recently passed away and we are disposing of the computer. This computer is actually older than my father's computer which has ME on it. Can I take my operating disks from the the computer that will be disposed of and install them on my Dad's computer which has Windows ME on it? The system was licensed to the old computer. If we can't do that, we probably will switch out the drives, but it will still be easier to upgrade my Dads than doing all the switching. When I upgraded the computer I gave to my mom, I put in a new hard…

Power Point Viewer 2003
by Guest Ed Meza- 2 replies

I have a question regarding PPV 2003. I've received a couple of presentations that *do have music,* - however I can't hear it. When forwarded to folks, they are able to hear the music. Yet, 99% of the other PP presentations that do have music in my system - I can hear them perfectly! I have tried to Google downloads for update versions, and the only free download I could find was PP Viewer 2007 - which requires Windows 2000 SP4. Since I'm running Win ME, I am unable to find an upgrade. Does any of you have any ideas as of what could be wrong? Or do I have to accept the fact that I indeed need to 'dump' Win ME and upgrade to a more current system? Lastly, …

Hibernate & Garbage Collection & Finer Points
by Guest Bob- 2 replies
My oh my, the activity on this group seems to be getting thin like my hair... When you "hibernate" primarily for garbage collection ( the analog to memory as scandisk is for disk), one would rather not have their system take a nap. One just wants ME to clean up its used-memory and unused memory linked lists and then let the user do what ever they want. Unfortunately, as the name of the mode says, one will have to hibernate until taking the few steps required to wake up from hibernation. Those steps might easily take a minute or two. (On our computer, I have to go get a finger nail clipper but that's another story). I know everybody (except me, apparently)…

Programs Folder
by Guest Ed Meza- 2 replies

When pointing to Start | Programs , most all the folders like Accessories, Avast, CCleaner, etc. have a yellow folder *blocked* by a square that appears to have a diagram on it. When displaying Folder Options, I see this diagram on the General Tab and *Use windows classic folders* is checked. I don't know what changed the appearance of these folders. There has to be a way to get such programs folders displayed just as *solid-yellow color folders*. I have tried just about everything and have not been successful to change them. Would appreciate any help. Thanks, Ed

My father's computer won't start windows. I am going to use the reinstall disk that came with the computer, but would like to try to save his files first. I have located everything except the address book used by outlook express. Can anyone tell me the default location of the file? Please note that I cannot use the OE program to export it, as I cannot start windows. Thank you Bruce Nelson

WinME internal use of ports?
by Guest Greegor- 2 replies
I've been using Tiny Personal Firewall, AVG and Spybot S&D resident. I keep seeing various programs that are part of Windows attempting to access IP addresses and ports that do not make sense to me. One of the programs was an AVG file itself, but trying to talk to some stange IP address when nothing like that should have been taking place. I suspect something has burrowed into AVG itself. Has this sort of thing been known to happen? Is the autochk program supposed to talk to 255.255.255.255 to request my own dynamic address? My immediate question is this: What programs should be accessing what IP addresses? Scandisk shouldn't have to access …

Re: Belarc Advisor

Re: Belarc Advisor When asking about the content of the new updates, I received this answer from Belarc Advisor's support service: "The security definitions update gets only a new security definitions file, describing the Microsoft security update bulletin in details the Advisor can use to see which security updates are missing and apply to your computer." For whatever it's worth and especially the Loom (I had a need to know myself). Obviously WinME and less wouldn't 'have' to be included when updating, since no newer updates are available, but anything beyond Me and upwards would be 'advised' to use the updated version. Hope this doesn't draw any 'frien…

Help: I Can Only Load Pages For Several Minutes
by Guest Searcher7- 2 replies
My old Compaq pc with WindowsME only allows me to surf the internet for several minutes. It will then completely stop loading pages and in order to temporarily fix the problem I have to reboot. At first I thought it was Verizon(which had gone down a couple of days ago), but has hoping someone can give me advice on what to check and do next if it is my system itself. Sometimes I can't even save an image because the system "thinks" there is not enough room on my drive even though it is a 4g that has 6-700mb free. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. My pc is brain dead, trying to do most any thing gives me a Microsoft Internet Explorer message "Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page. As a result, the page may not display correctly" And in fact pages don't disply anything. I feel I lost needed files when I found keystroke software and had to reboot to finish removal using XSPY spyware software. I also haven't been able to find any of my software that came with my sony vaio, or the boot up disk I made years ago. any idea's would be appretiated
