Re: Moving My Pictures - Mike M

Re: Moving My Pictures - Mike M Hi Mike I finally decided I really need to have My Pictures living on my desktop, but before TweakUI will do the deed it pops up this scary warning: "Carelessly changing a special folder may render your system unusable. For example, don't set two special folders equal to each other, or set a special folder equal to a system folder like the Fonts folder. Continue changing special folders?" If I move the My Pictures folder to the desktop it will then reside: inside the Desktop folder, which is inside the Windows folder, which is inside the C: folder; instead of where it is now: inside the My Documents folder which is insid…

OT but Important: Usenet Abuse and Impersonation by a sick individual using IP address 87.96.104.188 Hi: To all respective forum readers, please take notice: 1) First of all, my apologies for such a wide off-topic cross- posting. It's unusual, and very frowned upon. But I deem it necessary in lieu of recent events. You can just disregard if you will. 2) There is a user on the net who has impersonated "Don Klipstein", me, as well as other respectable Usenet posters. He/she is using our names, email addresses, and profiles to post nonsense on Usenet newsgroups. This impersonator seems to be located either in Burma or Korea and has the IP address of 87.…

OT: Vista update
by Guest Heirloom- 12 replies

To those interested, The new notebook with Vista Home Premium is working just fine for my wife. It took quite a while to remove all of the "trial crap" that came installed, but, that is almost complete.....I only need to remove a few file and folder leftovers and do some manual housekeeping in the registry. Overall, she is impressed with the OS and the system. Personally, I like XP better (mainly because I am used to it).....Vista seems to be a bit "AOL'ish" with all the 'eye candy' and has a number of 'nag' messages from the PC Health feature. i.e., it did not recognize the backup I made from Acronis to an external USB HD. Bottom line…

System Restore
by Guest Dapper Dan- 8 replies

Can anyone enlighten me with respect to how System Restore works. In a Clean Boot environment, I uninstalled Spybot 1.4 and deleted remnants (there were quite a few files and folders remaining). Then downloaded and installed Spybot 1.5 and upon rebooting, I immediately ran into resource problems. I think the problem is related to either me deleting the remnant files after uninstalling V1.4 or the fact that the new version is running in the background. In any event, not finding a way to disable that feature, I elected to run a restore point to yesterday. Upon reboot, I was surprised to see Spybot version 1.5. I had understood that SR does not affect dat…

Daylight Savings Time Update for Win ME
by Guest O.J. Newman- 6 replies
Hello: Earlier this week, I downloaded and installed an update from MS to account for the new Daylight Savings Time end date for my Win XP SP2 PC. However, does MS provide such an update for Win ME, now that it is out of support? How can one have Win ME automatically adjust for the new Daylight Savings Time start and end dates? Has anyone come up with a 3rd-party update? Thanks in advance. O.J.

Dual Boot for WinME and Win2000? 1 2
by Guest webster72n- 28 replies
- 1.3k views
Is dual boot for WinME and Win2000 feasible and/or recommendable for the home user? I'm almost certain it is feasible, but is it recommendable also? Ubuntu and WinME don't seem to like each other, at least in my case. Adding Win2000 would give me additional opportunities I would like to have. Any and all comments are welcome, thank you. Harry.

After doing the update for AdAware, there was an icon in the systray. I tried to find a way to stop it from loading in the AdAware program and nothing. I unticked it in MSCONFIG and it put itself back so I uninstalled AdAware 2007 and will install the old version. -- Alias To email me, remove shoes

Disk Defragment Error
by Guest schacko- 4 replies

Its been a long time since I defragmented my hard drive. Recently I ran a defragmentation on my drive then an error message came up, and said that Disk Defrag. cannot continue becuase the defragment cannot view certain files. It recommended me to do a ScanDisc. I did it, but when it was so close to being done, it froze and restarted. How can I complete a full ScanDisc (Through) without it freezing or restarting? P.S.- What is the best software to remove unnecessary files and clean the computer of junk and clutter so the computer can run more efficiently? (XP and ME Computer)

Downgrading from Win XP to Win ME?
by Guest O.J. Newman- 14 replies
Hello: The system requirements listed on the Windows ME box are noticeably less than the system requirements listed on the Windows XP SP2 Home Edition box. Also, many software packages that still support both Windows ME and Windows XP list noticeably less systems requirements to run on Windows ME as opposed to running on Windows XP. If I were to downgrade my operating system from Windows XP SP2 Home to Windows ME, would I notice improved performance (speed) in running my PC, as the systems requirements are less? My system main specs are: AMD Athlon XP 2200 CPU 1 GB DDR RAM (the max for this MB) 100 GB HD, 7200 RPM, 2 MB cache. Does anyone hav…

by Guest Ed Meza- 7 replies

When trying to access Microsoft Works, version 5.0 on Windows ME, I get a message that reads: "A file is missing so Microsoft Works cannot run. Please reinstall Microsoft Works." This software was functional and it came pre-installed when I acquired the computer. I do not have a software disc to reinstall it. Any ideas on how to make it work? I have tried system restore and I still get the same message. Thanks, Ed

Unofficial Win ME SP1?
by Guest O.J. Newman- 6 replies
Hello: I recently came upon a site that claims to have an "Unofficial" SP1 for Windows ME at http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#WME. Does anyone know anything about this SP or have any experience with it? Is it worth trying, or am I more likely to get myself into trouble by attempting to install this SP? Also listed are many separate updates, but these may be included as part of the unofficial SP. Again, does anyone know anything about these? Thanks in advance. O.J. P.S. I also seem to recall seeing another unofficial Win ME SP that was a collection of all of the official Win ME updates released by Microsoft. Does anyone know anything about thi…

Anybody here old enough (Heirloom?) to remember running CP-M? I used to have a Kaypro with it, and ran WordStar and later Perfect Writer as word processors. When I hit Save on a 30 page document, I could have a couple of cups of coffee before the pages were all saved. Richard,of ages long gone.

Backing it all up 1 2
by Guest caroloyl- 31 replies
- 1.5k views
Having three C drive failures in just two and a half years requiring me to reinstall and re-set up every program I use (which I'm doing now) makes me wonder if it's possible to copy/backup my entire new C drive to a comparable slave for switching out when this new primary master also goes belly-up down the road. I've replaced enough internal hard drives now to know how to switch them and their jumper pins so the mechanics aren't a problem. But will this duplicating idea work to give me a fresh bootable functioning Windows et al with a minimum of trouble? My thanks in advance for your experience and insight. calamity carol
