Backing it all up 1 2
by Guest caroloyl- 31 replies

Having three C drive failures in just two and a half years requiring me to reinstall and re-set up every program I use (which I'm doing now) makes me wonder if it's possible to copy/backup my entire new C drive to a comparable slave for switching out when this new primary master also goes belly-up down the road. I've replaced enough internal hard drives now to know how to switch them and their jumper pins so the mechanics aren't a problem. But will this duplicating idea work to give me a fresh bootable functioning Windows et al with a minimum of trouble? My thanks in advance for your experience and insight. calamity carol

Rhyme but no Reason to System Restore points deletion 1 2
by Guest Bob- 31 replies
- 1.3k views
'opefully there is still time for me to learn to control our WinMe computer. I've noticed since I got to messing around with it, that System Restore points dissappearing for no reason I was aware of. I don't run some of the Disk Cleaning Utilities nearly as much as I used to. I used to Defragment alot (every night) because I had seen how disk (file) fragmentation can degrade system response time. Back then I never used System Restore points - was barely aware they existed. It also seemed I never needed them. Nowadays things have changed (Dunno why / wish I did) System Restore points can really save your system. In these circumstances, I am pretty sure th…

by Guest Alias- 30 replies

After doing the update for AdAware, there was an icon in the systray. I tried to find a way to stop it from loading in the AdAware program and nothing. I unticked it in MSCONFIG and it put itself back so I uninstalled AdAware 2007 and will install the old version. -- Alias To email me, remove shoes

Unauthorized credit card use 1 2
by Guest Justin Thyme- 29 replies
- 1.9k views
Quite recently I was alerted by my credit card company that there appeared to be several unusual charges on my account (for which I thanked them profusely). My wife and I have our identically-numbered cards in our possession, so I knew they hadn't been lost. I know well that when one hands his card to a server in a restaurant, for example, one temporarily loses all control over any security he may have had, and that's a definite possibility. I also know that there are keylogger programs that may exist on my computer (although I don't know how they might have got there). My suspicion was raised a notch when Alwil's avast! antivirus program detected a Trojan …

Using Registry Repair Tool To Fix Your Computer 1 2
by Guest jeremiah wright- 28 replies
- 2.2k views
Do you need a Windows registry repair tool for your PC, because you know that there are most probably errors in your computer? I remember looking for cleaner software when my PC started giving me all sorts of problems too. Having top notch software to optimize your computer's performance at all times is essential. 1. What Is The Windows Registry? It is one of the most important components in the entire system, yet many PC users have no idea about what it is! It is not hard to believe though, since we have never been taught about how to properly maintain our registries. All the computer's software, hardware and user profile settings are stored in the registry, m…

Dual Boot for WinME and Win2000? 1 2
by Guest webster72n- 28 replies
- 1.3k views
Is dual boot for WinME and Win2000 feasible and/or recommendable for the home user? I'm almost certain it is feasible, but is it recommendable also? Ubuntu and WinME don't seem to like each other, at least in my case. Adding Win2000 would give me additional opportunities I would like to have. Any and all comments are welcome, thank you. Harry.

This is a follow up to the last thread I participated "Re: Using Registry Repair Tool to fix your..." I njust wanted to thank Mart, Mike, Loom, Heather, Alan and several other people who through the years have helped me resolved problems with Win ME. I finally decided to upgrade my system to Windows Vista Home Edition and have tucked away the old box. I truly appreciate your help. Cheers! -- Ed

Floppy disk, do I need it? 1 2
by Guest Justin Thyme- 27 replies
- 1.4k views
I'm strongly considering a new desktop computer and notice that many (most?) of them no longer include a slot for floppy disks. I feel like I'd be losing something that might be necessary, even though I very rarely use that feature any longer. I believe there are accessory floppy disk readers/writers available, but are they worth the trouble and expense? What will I lose if I have no floppy disk ability at all? TIA Ken Bland

AdAware SE Personal Build 1 2
by Guest Dapper Dan- 27 replies
- 1.3k views
I just read the tail end of the recent thread regarding AdAware SE and would appreciate if someone wouldn't mind taking a few minutes more and clarifying this for me. My version of AdAware is SE1R210.27.12.2007. Any time I check for updates I'm told that I am up to date. A visit to the Lavasoft website explains that support for this version expired December 31, 2007 but that I should replace it with AdAware 2007. The problem is that 2007 requires Windows 2000 or better. Mike has explained to Heather that Lavasoft has fixed the problem with the dated definitions and that she can download new definitions for AdAware SE from the Lavasoft site. I do indeed see w…

A question on going from ME to XP 1 2
by Guest SSJ04 Mewtwo- 27 replies
- 1.3k views
A while back we tried to get DSL running on this ME box. During the process of installing the modem for some reason or another the modem couldn't find the correct protocols to use to connect. The tech guy they sent out couldn't get the ting to work. Now, here's where XP comes into play. The tech guy told us that if we were to upgrade to XP that the ME network protocols that are missing that would make the modem connect would still be used by XP. I believe the missing protocols were deleted the day that we got Cox high speed internet and that was six years ago. Now, would it be better for me to install ME over the top of itself or get a XP upgrade to fix th…

Free version of Acronis v8 1 2
by Guest O.J. Newman- 26 replies
- 1.7k views
Hello: Here's an item from the Win 98 general newsgroup that may be of interest to some. Acronis True Image v8 supports Win 98 thru XP, including ME. However, while it supports ATA drives, it may not support SATA drives. I'm not sure. It seems to be a multi-step process, to fill out the request in the link below, then to fill out a free registration form, and then to login and download the free version of Acronis v8 from the list of registered software, but it does work. Ripping Audio CD Problems 1 2
by Guest Job- 25 replies
- 1.3k views
I've been trying to find a way/software to rip some CDs. The only thing I've accomplished so far is to get myself wrapped around the axle so tightly that a rabid feeling started coming over me. So.....I unclenched my teeth, wiped the foam from my mouth and decided to come dip into this fountain of knowledge. And yes, I'm probably one of the last five people in the universe that is still using Windows ME (and proud of it podner). Enough frivolity, on to the serious stuff. I have downloaded various programs that advertise they will rip CDs and will work with Windows ME. The programs are: CDex Express Rip WinAmp dBpoweramp Music Converter Exact Audio Cop…

Malware
by Guest Honeysweet- 23 replies
- 1.3k views
Hello everyone.. Does anyone know of a good malware detector? For some reason, the top of my window keeps flashing, and I hear a type of "clicking" noise.. so I am wondering if I have any type of malware since Ive already ran my anti-virus and super anti-spyware...with both not finding anything....Id like to check, but am unsure of which malware detection program is a good one for Windows ME. Does anyone know of any good malware programs? Thanks so much! Tarcia -- *Let who you are speaks so loudly I can't hear what you're saying.* Ralph Waldo Emerson

When the POST first starts, various BIOS settings are displayed. Then the Windows splash screen appears for about five seconds. After that, the remaining portions of the POST appear before the computer gets to the desktop. I may have inadvertently caused this problem when changing various settings by using the FreshUI tweak program. (Not a fault of the program.) Any ideas for removing the splash screen during POST so startup goes faster? Thanks, Ray
