wallpaper question

Someone wanted to change the desktop wallpaper. What I need to know is why during a re-start, the old wallpaper appears just before the desktop loads and then the new wallpaper comes up after all the icons appear. I've also lost the ability to uncheck the checkbox on the web tab on the display properties dialogue box to view the desk as a web page. -- So says the cat

Sudden Abnormal mouse erratic behaviour 1 2
by Guest newbie2000- 45 replies

My computer, running WinXP Pro with 128 MB RAM, today has started acting very strange. Although normally it has to be double-clicked to open a file or folder, now it sometimes opens files/folders/e-mail with only one mouse click, not two. However, it is very inconsistent, sometimes requiring two clicks as normal, but sometimes requiring only one click. Another symptom is that when a window is open, while browing the web, the scroll bar on the right is very herky-jerky, but sometimes not - again being inconsistent. Both these problems occur pretty often - enough to be very annoying. Another symptom is that it when I try to capture text by holding down the …

Ugrading from Windows ME to XP
by Guest laura- 2 replies
I gave my stepmother an old computer. The computer originally had Windows 98 on it and upgraded it to XP Home addition. She recently passed away and we are disposing of the computer. This computer is actually older than my father's computer which has ME on it. Can I take my operating disks from the the computer that will be disposed of and install them on my Dad's computer which has Windows ME on it? The system was licensed to the old computer. If we can't do that, we probably will switch out the drives, but it will still be easier to upgrade my Dads than doing all the switching. When I upgraded the computer I gave to my mom, I put in a new hard…

need installation disk
by Guest somae- 2 replies

We've got an hp pavilion 8775c computer that was in the trash. It was full of viruses, so I erased the harddrive (windows me). I installed win98 on it. I then purchased the recovery cds. The computer doesn't have the original sound card (I added a new one) and I added extra memory. The recovery cds (which install windows me) is not recognizing the computer although these cds are for this model. (The mainboard is the original one.) The computer has a sticker for windows me on it with the software key. I'm looking for a copy of an installation disk for windows me (upgrade or new) that I can use to reinstall windows me - or any suggestions on how to ge…

Floppy disk, do I need it? 1 2
by Guest Justin Thyme- 27 replies

I'm strongly considering a new desktop computer and notice that many (most?) of them no longer include a slot for floppy disks. I feel like I'd be losing something that might be necessary, even though I very rarely use that feature any longer. I believe there are accessory floppy disk readers/writers available, but are they worth the trouble and expense? What will I lose if I have no floppy disk ability at all? TIA Ken Bland

Explorer..Shell32.dll
by Guest Mizrahi- 0 replies

Explorer has cause an error in Shell32.dll. Explorer will now close. If you continue to experience problems, try restating your computer. This error popped up first time while adding an MP3 file to Winamp 5.1. I clicked close. The mp3 file however got added and played normally. I noticed that Modem and Soundcard icons have dissppeared from the Quick Launch bar leaving Volume icon only. But both of them remained active. Restarting the computer made no change. I soon found out other players ( Total Recorder, Cooledit) are acting similarly. Scanreg... reports no error in registry. Reinstalled the windows and the players and still the same position. Please…

Re: WindowsMe is Dying

Re: WindowsMe is Dying Crossposted to: alt.windows-me,microsoft.public.windowsme.general How much work are you willing to do to fix up a 9 year old PC? At 350 MHz clock rate, it's awfully slow. Can't run DVD, can't do ROM burning (with exceptions), horrendously slow for internet use, etc. I use castoff computers in the 500MHz range, but the 350MHz I have in the basement (IBM) would be consigned to be an MP3 player jukebox and maybe for a photo archive (duplicate set). If your community garbage haulers have a day for spring cleaning where they don't charge for disposal of tires and junk computers, you could trade up to a 1GHz or better. Corporation…

GOOD NEWS! Memory Leak Work Around -> Hibernate
by Guest Bob- 2 replies

A couple days ago, while running the System Monitor, I tried Start -> Shutdown -> Hibernate again. Good news! It appears to have a very positive affect in cleaning up memory leaks. We've been using winME at our home ever since it came out in 2000 or whenever. I have been constantly amazed at the bad press it receives because it has worked so well for us. At first I really liked its Movie Maker (had some help from MS before it was dependable with our old Sony VX1000). Also the Sony Blue Ray worked altho Sony told us it wouldn't. Since Internet Explorer 6.0, it definitely got worse. I put IE6.0 on twice. The first time up the system was such a pain that …

XP from ME

Hello all.. I have a maybe stupid question, but I really dont know the answer.. I have been running Windows ME for years now with very few issues.. But I just think its time for me to move on to XP..ME is too difficult to find any help or answers for these days. My question is.. What is the best way to do this? Is it best to simply "upgrade" to XP from ME, or to delete ME altogether and install a fresh copy of XP? This is new to me and I will have to do this myself so what is the best way to go about this? I just want to be sure that I wind up with a fresh installation of Windows XP and nothing else with it Thanks to everyone in advance! You can complai…

Tab Issues

Hi all, I am not sure which catagory this question belongs in, so pardon me if Im sending it to the wrong group... My problem is this: My TAB button on my keyboard will not move my cursor. For example, when signing into my Yahoo email, I'll input my username, and then press the tab button to move the cursor down so I can put in my password, but it will not move. Yet if I am on a regular webpage, the tab button will function just fine. I thought it was a keyboard problem, even though every other function worked just fine..I went and purchased a new keyboard anyway. But I am still having the same problem, so it cannot be the keyboard. I didnt always have th…
