New Computer, ME incompatable, XP is only upgrade
by Guest Chronus- 17 replies
In Microsofts great wisdom, they made the XP professional upgrade require windows already be installed. I have a new computer so it started without windows. Not knowing a way around the problem, I installed (or at least tried to) Windows ME. It halts due to a lack of compatable drivers. Restart it and it comes up without the CD (actually DVD) drive. Yes the drive works, its the one Windows ME was installed from. Now I have an extremely limited Windows ME with no way to access the XP professional disk. Anyone know of a work around?

System Restore has a CreateRestore option?
by Guest Bob- 16 replies
I ask (again) because, IMHO, it doesn't make good sense for it not to and Andy Rathbone, in his books Windows Me for Dummies, describes System Restore as having a CreateRestore point as well as an option to select a prior creation. Our WinME computer, working pretty well for eight years now, has no such option or I sure as he!! can't find it.... Another peculiarity was, at first I could not get the Movie Maker to work with our Sony VX1000 camcorder. I got some support from MS which fixed that. And I found one of the Sony Blue Ray RW DVDs worked well with winME although Sony said it shouldn't. I think a lot of us have seen that kind of good news several t…

Do you want to get away from windowsme and windows in general
by Guest llanalott@yahoo.com- 16 replies

I assume that many use ME for simple browsing email and such and would like to upgrade but don't really care to spend money for upgrading or have an older computer or laptop and feel the possibly of slow performance after upgrading would not be worth paying for an upgrade to XP. Well I used ME and XP for that matter for way longer than I wanted or should have and thought this is kind of ridiculous. Simple software installs make ME break, the drivers are no longer updated, there are no new updates, the system will not be updated, it's not supported, people don't make much new software or software updates for it. It always manages to get slower over time for n…

CCleaner

The recent thread on the CCleaner update prompted me to look at this utility again. It has been several years but I seem to recall one of the experts (Alias or Heirloom??) issuing a caution to use only the CLEANER component and nothing else. I have just looked at the utility and it appears to have some interesting tools. Has anything changed over the years to make this utility safer? Dan

Just a Hello

I haven't stuck my head in here much in a LONG time. (Probably a bit over a year ago.) So, well, I figured I'd stick my head in and say hi. I don't even have an ME image in a VM to play with, I suppose I could set one up but I'm lazy. I'll take this moment in time to remind everyone that Friday is International Talk Like A Pirate Day. ¿Virus en Windows Millenium Edition?
by Guest Isaac Armando Guerrero Pineda- 16 replies

The Problems of Registry Cleaners
by Guest O.J. Newman- 16 replies
Hello: As was discussed in a recent thread here, registry cleaners can do more harm than good. There are 2 recent articles on this topic in the Usenet group "microsoft.public.windowsxp.general" , under the thread subjects of "Which Registry Cleaner" and "reg cleaners". Both reflected the recent postings in this newsgroup to avoid registry cleaners altogether. One post referenced an interesting forum thread at: http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=28099 , which discussed the many problems that such utilities can cause. FYI. Cheers, O.J.

found : unofficial Win ME ServicePack.. and WMP10 for ME :
by Guest sascha- 15 replies

just found this guys amazing page, http://www.mdgx.com/wme.htm it has a ton of information on all windows os and offers free updates even for now "dead" Windows. Like this one here : a ServicePack for ME which does improve both stability and speed : direct download: http://www.mdgx.com/spx/MESP1.EXE , english ME editions . and a "hacked" XP MediaPlayer 10 (!) for 98SE and ME is to be found there too among so much more., of course all this is not MS authorised and all total unsupported. But this is a way to keep a ME machine a bit longer in use than MS had planned it for us. Note : the page is not my page and I am in no way involved. Enjoy it…

Someone wanted to change the desktop wallpaper. WinME memory limit
by Guest DG- 15 replies
Hi everyone I will be "destroying" 2 PCs to build a "new" one the final result will be: Abit BP6 with 2 Celeron 500Mhz processors, 640 MB Ram, ATA66 integrated + ATA133 Promise PCI card. ATI All-in-Wonder 128 (Rage chipset) 32 MB AGP video card. 3 HD, 1 x 4.3 gb (C: WinME + progs), 1 x 80 gb (Data), 1 x 20 gb (E: Win XPpro + progs) I already have all the drivers that I'll need for both OS. It will be dual boot and my question concerns the WinME part. I understand that it will use only one processor but I've heard that Win 98 and ME have problems with memory above 512 MB and there need to be some command(s) added somewhere (.ini files?). It will…

!0 Minutes Internet Stops
by Guest Terry Smythe- 15 replies

A friend, still running WinME, has suddenly experienced a stoppage of his internet connection after ~10 minutes. The computer does not freeze up, still able to run applications. In order to regain internet connection, must reboot. Suspiciously like an overheating CPU, we swapped over his components into another functionally similar computer. Surprise! Surprise! Same problem. Then we swapped his USB-LAN adapter for a PCI LAN card. Same problem. He's run all his housekeeping utilities, Ad-Aware, SpyBot, Registray mechanic, et al....., but problem persists. Suggestions? InstallShield problem
by Guest George J. Wallace- 15 replies

Hi; About 2 weeks ago, while dl'ing new defs for Spybot S&D, a newer version of Spybot began to self-install. Without thinking (which is the cause of most of my problems!), I let it proceed. Halfway thru, it choked. I dl'ed the new version and successfully installed it but it brought my system to a crawl, so I uninstalled it and re-installed the older version. Since then, I can't install any other programs. I get the following message: Setup Initialization Error Setup has detected that unInstallShield is in use. Please close unInstallShield and restart setup. Error 432 Using Process Explorer, I don't see unInstallShield running so I guess…

Downgrading from Win XP to Win ME?
by Guest O.J. Newman- 14 replies
Hello: The system requirements listed on the Windows ME box are noticeably less than the system requirements listed on the Windows XP SP2 Home Edition box. Also, many software packages that still support both Windows ME and Windows XP list noticeably less systems requirements to run on Windows ME as opposed to running on Windows XP. If I were to downgrade my operating system from Windows XP SP2 Home to Windows ME, would I notice improved performance (speed) in running my PC, as the systems requirements are less? My system main specs are: AMD Athlon XP 2200 CPU 1 GB DDR RAM (the max for this MB) 100 GB HD, 7200 RPM, 2 MB cache. Does anyone hav…
