Re-installing on laptop with no CD drive
by Guest Alpha- 14 replies

We need to re-install Windows 98 SE or ME or 2K-Pro on a laptop that has its CD drive internal connection damaged. The floppy drive works though. We have all the original Windows CDs and a Win98 boot floppy, as well as all the required drivers. The unit originally had Win98 on it that was later upgraded to WinME and subsequently to Win2K-Pro. Can we - take out the hard drive and format it (using appropriate existing adapters) in FAT on another machine and - copy the CD contents and device drivers to an install folder, and - put that drive back into the laptop, and - boot with the Win98 floppy, and - run Setup from the install folder, bypassing the CD drive? …

I have ZA version 6.1.744.001. When I tried to update to more recent versions I experienced all sorts of problems. This version seems to work well, but I was wondering if there is some compelling reason to abandon it in favor of some other firewall. Any ideas?

MI5-Persecution: MI5 are Afraid to Admit Theyre Behind the Persecution (26382)

MI5 are Afraid to Admit They're Behind the Persecution MI5 have issued a formal denial of any involvement in my life to the Security Service Tribunal, as you might expect them to; but, more importantly, the persecutors have never denied that theyre from the Security Service, despite several years of accusations from my corner on usenet and in faxed articles. I am not surprised that the Security Service Tribunal found "no determination in your favour". I am however a little surprised that the persecutors have refused to confirm my identification of them; by doing so, they implicitly admit that my guess was right. "No determination in your favour" says the Secu…

As a software evaluator, I am aware that there are a large variety of options to choose from when looking to optimize and speed up your computer. Many computers are plagued by spyware and registry issues. According to CNN there is over a 90% chance that your PC is infected with spyware. That is why it is essential to have an antispyware program as a part of your PC arsenal. Registry issues are one of the most common issues related to the freezing of your computer and annoying error messages, therefore a registry cleaner is absolutely essential. 1. AntiSpyware: According to Wired News, "Spyware is the biggest threat to personal computing." But what exactly is spy…

My computer is dying. Its old and pretty grumpy. I want to buy a lap top with a more up-to-date OS but I have years of personal files saved in ME word processing. Can Vista or some other OS open, modify and close these old files or am I just out of luck when my old computer dies?

Modem & SR problems
by Guest SSJ04 Mewtwo- 13 replies

Hi guys, About three days ago I was able to connect at a bit rate between 49.3-50.6. Later that same day a storm hit and afterwards I'm getting 19.2-21.6 bit rates. Is it possible that the one using the machine at the time didn't unplug the phone line quick and lightning has damaged this modem? It seems that SR isn't making automatic check points. I can create check points but there seems to be no check points created by SR on its own according to the others who use this machine. I ask these questions together because if it's not the modem and if I can't find any check points then I don't think I'll be able to restore it back before the bit rate went dow…

Spybot S&D

Hello, I just upgraded from version 1.4 to 1.5 Problem(s): 1) It takes about 2 minutes to get the Spybot screen loaded before it shows on the computer screen. 2) I honestly don't know what settings I should have on/off. 3) Thinking of uninstalling version 1.5 & going back to version 1.4. Any ideas as of why the new version is such a hog on computer resources? Way too slow to load. Also, what's the best way to go back to the older version - without affecting any files that might be left over throughout the system/registry. Thanks, Ed

Disk Cleanup Automatically Deleted Something???
by Guest Fred Mann- 12 replies
Hello, My disk was almost full -- 200mb remaining or so, and disk cleanup popped up after I got a "disk space low" warning. This has happened to me several times and I usually just delete some stuff in my recycle bin. But the last time I got the low disk space message, I clicked "NO" when disk cleanup offered to clear up some space (I was downloading a radio show). Next thing I know, I have 1.25G of freee space. So it looks like something was deleted without my approval. My recycle bin still has over 1G of deleted stuff that I'm on the fence about keeping, and it doesn't look like much is missing from there (I could be wrong). But I was wondering ... is there som…

Ad-aware
by Guest Shane- 12 replies

Well, it's been weeks now. I've e-mailed them twice asking how I'm supposed to acquire my copy of Ad-aware Plus as per my 2000 purchase that included lifetime updates. I've had initial acknowledgment of both e-mails but no further response. I shall henceforth consider Lavasoft to have become a new Symantec - their products don't work and they don't give a puck about their customers. I shall assume they have decided lifetime updates promised in the early days was a mistake. I expect that in court they will try to argue that Ad-aware 2007 is a different product - and, indeed, that that is why they named it so! I shall spread the word that they - like Syma…

OT: Vista update
by Guest Heirloom- 12 replies

To those interested, The new notebook with Vista Home Premium is working just fine for my wife. It took quite a while to remove all of the "trial crap" that came installed, but, that is almost complete.....I only need to remove a few file and folder leftovers and do some manual housekeeping in the registry. Overall, she is impressed with the OS and the system. Personally, I like XP better (mainly because I am used to it).....Vista seems to be a bit "AOL'ish" with all the 'eye candy' and has a number of 'nag' messages from the PC Health feature. i.e., it did not recognize the backup I made from Acronis to an external USB HD. Bottom line…

SUPERAntiSpyware?
by Guest webster72n- 12 replies

Notwithstanding the prolonged scanning time for a complete scan (24.31 min. on my pc) and longer download time for updates, this program in overall performance is worthy of replacing Ad-Aware SE Personal for WinME, IMHO. I would appreciate other views or concurrence, for that matter. Harry.

Hotfixes and Updates for Me
by Guest Justin Thyme- 12 replies

I have a six-year-old Dell with Windows Me that I would like to give to a friend or close acquaintance, but first I want to remove personal stuff like letters (no porn, nothing that shouldn't be seen by anybody, but of no business to others). I understand that the Format command will accomplish as much as I need, but Format will also remove the operating system (won't it?). I have all the CDs that came with this machine when I bought it new, so I ought to be able to restore Windows Me. But what about all the modifications that took place before MS stopped support for Me? Can I get the hotfixes, etc., that bring this computer up to the level it was when…

New AVG AV 8.0 no longer supports Win 98/ME
by Guest O.J. Newman- 12 replies

Hello: I noticed on another group a message that AVG has just released a new v8.0 of its' anti-virus product. Unfortunately, the new v8.0 does *not* support Win 98/ME - only Win 2K and up. However, at least for the moment, AVG Free v7.5, which does support Win 98/ME, remains available. But at some point, if AVG follows past tradition, AVG Free 7.5 will be replaced with AVG Free v8.0. See: http://www.grisoft.com/ww.product-avg-anti-virus#tba2 and http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/us/frt/0#details . Cheers, O.J.
