Power Point Viewer 2003
by Guest Ed Meza- 2 replies

I have a question regarding PPV 2003. I've received a couple of presentations that *do have music,* - however I can't hear it. When forwarded to folks, they are able to hear the music. Yet, 99% of the other PP presentations that do have music in my system - I can hear them perfectly! I have tried to Google downloads for update versions, and the only free download I could find was PP Viewer 2007 - which requires Windows 2000 SP4. Since I'm running Win ME, I am unable to find an upgrade. Does any of you have any ideas as of what could be wrong? Or do I have to accept the fact that I indeed need to 'dump' Win ME and upgrade to a more current system? Lastly, …

RE: Just upgraded to vista and have several problems
by Guest Kenneth Warren- 8 replies

RE: Just upgraded to vista and have several problems Hi I just upgraded to Vista about 2 weeks ago and I am having several problems with it. (1) With UAC on I can't open Itunes. If I turn off UAC then I can open Itunes with no problem and use my ipod with it. (2) When viewing videos on youtube or msn I can't hear the audio with UAC on but when I turn it off I can hear the audio just fine. I am sure there are other problems that I have not found yet. So my question is; should I reinstall Vista on my computer and do a hard install? When I upgraded to vista I ran the HP Upgrade Assistant and then installed Windows Vista Home Premium Express Upgrade. …

Windows Protection Error - HELP!
by Guest Jackpine- 9 replies

For some reason unknown to me, when my computer started up today, I got a blue screen with the message: Windows Protection Error. Please restart your system. When I restarted, the same message came up. The keyboard and mouse are disabled, and i had to turn off the pc by unplugging the power. I checked microsoft on another pc for this problem, and it listed a large number of possibilites as the cause. I did manage to do a thorough scan disk. Some errors were found and automatically fixed. I then defragmented the drive. When rebooting, the same message came up. Does anyone have any hints for troubleshooting this? Thanks. -- Not all those who…

2 Programs to Increase Your PC's Performance
by Guest jeremiah wright- 14 replies

As a software evaluator, I am aware that there are a large variety of options to choose from when looking to optimize and speed up your computer. Many computers are plagued by spyware and registry issues. According to CNN there is over a 90% chance that your PC is infected with spyware. That is why it is essential to have an antispyware program as a part of your PC arsenal. Registry issues are one of the most common issues related to the freezing of your computer and annoying error messages, therefore a registry cleaner is absolutely essential. 1. AntiSpyware: According to Wired News, "Spyware is the biggest threat to personal computing." But what exactly is spy…

C:\_Restore\TEMP
by Guest MrTom- 9 replies

A previous post made me curious about C:\_Restore\TEMP (Windows ME, of course), which I looked at and found thousands (I think about 3000) of files, some create/modified as early as 2001. I reduced the disk space for system restore and then disabled it, interspersed with a reboot or two. Then C:\_Restore\TEMP showed no files; it was empty. I then enabled system restore and did a reboot. A system checkpoint was created and I created another restore point. Now C:\_Restore\TEMP has 93 files, many with creation dates as early as 2003 and many with modified dates earlier (Feb 2008, March 2008, April 2008) than May 2008 (today's system date is May 2, 2008)…

cdrom not reading files "sees" all files as music
by Guest tim78412- 1 reply

I do volunteer work repairing computers for the disablied. I had an old copy of ME. For several years I used it so I decided to upgrade a computer using win98 to ME. All went find except for 2 problems. The major one is it will no longer read the files system on cd-rw. It sees all files as music. This was not a problem for this machine in win98. How do I work around this problem? Another smaller problem is that the machine no longer shuts down completely by itself. A message comes on screen saying it is safe to turn off the computer. I am guessing this has to do with adci (not sure if those are the right letters I think it is aa power management issue). H…

Can't get past splash screen
by Guest John- 6 replies
A friend's laptop recently went faulty so he decided, as it's 7 years old, to treat himself to a new one. However, he needs a couple of things off the old one if at all possible, so he brought it to me. It boots, completes the POST OK and then shows the Windows ME splash screen - but gets no further, no matter how long you leave it. Pressing the "Esc" key to get rid of the splash screen and see what's going on reveals the following text: "Please wait while setup updates your config files. This may take a few minutes". After about two minutes, it shows: "Windows could not upgrade the file %1 from %2 %1: %2" and that message repeats at two minute…

Anyone like Me?
by Guest cool_boy- 10 replies
Since here is the Windows Me user board, Iw ant to ask you something. Do you like Me? Because I like it. No matter what they say about it. It ran on a 1996 PC, designed for Windows 95. And it ran better than Windows 98. The only problem was with Windows Media Player and Movie Maker, caused by not enough memory or something like that, but that was OK, since the machine was older even then. I don't hate Windows Me, I even like it, no matter that it is the most hated Windows OS ever. I actually have seen more problems in XP Home than in Me. XP Pro> XP Home. XP Home is worse thgan Me in my opinion, whether XP Pro is better, but I just never got to like Wind…

How Come I Need A Registry Cleaner For My Windows Computer?
by Guest jeremiah wright- 3 replies
You need a registry cleaner for your windows computer because of the numerous errors, which occur from registry problems. You see, the registry is the place where your computer stores the configuration information about your computer and your installed programs so that your operating system can use them. It is the basic blue print, or directions, for your computer. So, if these get messed up, you are in trouble. To steer clear of these types or problems, keep a registry cleaner for your windows computer installed at all times. Maintaining the windows registry is an important step in keeping your computer healthy and running error free. Registry problems can inclu…

For some reason, the top of my window keeps flashing, and I hear a type of "clicking" noise.. so I am wondering if I have any type of malware since Ive already ran my anti-virus and super anti-spyware...with both not finding anything....Id like to check, but am unsure of which malware detection program is a good one for Windows ME. Does the lack of 48-bit LBA mean: 1. That Win ME (and 98) can use hard drives larger than 137 MB, but that only 137 MB will be recognized and available for use - or - 2. That Win ME (and 98) will not even recognize drives larger than 137 MB, and thus can not use them? Could you please clarify how this works? TIA, O.J.

Please help. What should I do? It says: Error Starting Program The WLANAPI.DLL file is linked to missing export KERNEL32.DLL:GetSystemWindowsDirectoryW. Hi everyone I will be "destroying" 2 PCs to build a "new" one the final result will be: Abit BP6 with 2 Celeron 500Mhz processors, 640 MB Ram, ATA66 integrated + ATA133 Promise PCI card. ATI All-in-Wonder 128 (Rage chipset) 32 MB AGP video card. 3 HD, 1 x 4.3 gb (C: WinME + progs), 1 x 80 gb (Data), 1 x 20 gb (E: Win XPpro + progs) I already have all the drivers that I'll need for both OS. It will be dual boot and my question concerns the WinME part. I understand that it will use only one processor but I've heard that Win 98 and ME have problems with memory above 512 MB and there need to be some command(s) added somewhere (.ini files?). It will…

Windows Me on a PackardBell EasyNote
by Guest cool_boy- 4 replies

And Microsoft shouldn't have released Windows Me, because it had only a limited shelf life. Maybe if it stayed for a bit longer, and had a SP it would become quite good. I know a lot of people say that Me sucked because of drivers. Well, it may be true, but actually, I have never had any problems with it. It even ran well on a 1996 PC, with a Cyrix processor better than Windows 98. And the PC was designed for Windows 95!!! I'm considering installing Windows Me on a PackardBell EasyNoteR (I have original 2000, Me and XP (OEM), and I plan buying Windows 7 when it is released), will it work on it? Details: Peckard Bell EasyNoteR Processor …

I have an old PC with original Windows ME - no patches or upgrades. I want to save all of my data onto an external hard drive, but my computer won't even allow me to use Windows Explorer. What should I do? Also, I have my Comcast internet connected to this computer along with a wireless router, and all my other computers in the house are able to connect to the internet via the wireless router. However, when I try to access the internet off this Windows ME computer, it does not allow me access and freezes up! It was not always this way. I just want to save my data and then do a clean install on this computer with updated software. Can anyone help me…

To those who run AVG 7.5 I've got a procedure question. After running the AVG updater, the process seems to stay loaded even after clicking the 'OK' button after the update is successfully downloaded. Which of the following should I perceive as the best way to manage this: A. Leave the process running. B. Kill the process with PView. C. Reboot...,the one I've been doing. Thanks.
