Howdy, puter reports that my setupx.dll is not right, so I did the replacement thing from a new copy of the same dll file.. however after a couple of sessions on the web the puter says again that the same file setupx.dll is not right again.. Now I've scanned the puter with everything I got and then some and it says there isn't any virus or malware to be found.. (avast, adaware, housecall, etc..) did a full disk scan for possible bad sectors non found.. (80geg took 6.5 hours) So, I'm open for suggestions as to what the problem might be.. as a side note, every time i try to access the microsoft update site i get a crash notic…

Anybody here old enough (Heirloom?) to remember running CP-M? I used to have a Kaypro with it, and ran WordStar and later Perfect Writer as word processors. When I hit Save on a 30 page document, I could have a couple of cups of coffee before the pages were all saved. Richard,of ages long gone.

Several years ago, I recall learning in this NG that Alt+0176 inserted the degree symbol, however I don't recall the background. I don't believe that this come from the Character Map so would appreciate if someone would clarify. I would like to see what other symbols are available using theses codes. Thanks

I know this is not related to Windows Me, but I value input from the regulars and wondered if you cold provide guidance on replacing our Windows Me laptop. There are so many deals around but I seem to have narrowed our choice down to either; AMD Turion 64 x 2 dual-core TL-58, 1.9 GHz, 200 GB drive, 2 GB RAM with NVIDIA GeForce Go 7159M chipset at $900 Cdn. or Intel Core 2 Duo T5250, 1.5 GHz, 200 GB drive, 2 GB RAM with NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS chipset at $950 Cdn. In both cases, a similar DVD is included. On the surface the AMD looks like a better deal because the System Bus is reported at up to 1600 MHz whereas the Intel is 667 MHz. From what I thi…

Problem reinstalling winME
by Guest mm- 11 replies

Is there something about installing winME that causes it to freeze exactly 10% in to the Copy Files portion of the install. Or is it my harddrive, and what should I do about it? I banged my IBM Thjnkpad 600E laptop really hard, and winME won't start anymore, but DOS will, from a rescue disk**. Whether I should have or not, I ran DOS scandisk for many hours, and until today, kept finding 1 or 2 or 8 clusters that scandisk disabled, although for the last few passes, they were just clusters that it thought ran slow and it expected to fail soon. During all of this, I used a recovery disk to start DOS, and on about 5 occasions then used a legitimate ME update…

Routers
by Guest Dapper Dan- 11 replies

I'm thinking of changing from wired to wireless and would like some clarification from the experts in the NG. Currently I have a Desktop connected by wire in an Office and a laptop connected by wire in another room. A new laptop is replacing the old laptop but because it has 802.11 b,g,n, I'm thinking of going wireless and when I say that I mean the Desktop would probably remained "wired" but the laptop would go wireless. From what I understand I should purchase an "N' Router but these vary significantly in price. So I'm looking for input in terms of what I should be considering. Specifically, we are connected via cable with download speeds up to 8 Mbps. …

computer freezes
by Guest Dapper Dan- 10 replies

Have this nagging problem in the last month or so where Laptop Me freezes after popup window from Avast notifying detail changes. To be clear, the freeze does not occur with any update. A notification box appears in lower left screen advising of update saying "click here to review update". If I don't click on it, it will disappear in about 5-10 seconds and nothing happens. If and when I click on it, it details the changes but it then freezes when I try to close it. I can run a virus scan without problems but when I go to close the "results" window, it also freezes. Thinking it may have been a corrupt file, I uninstalled and reinstalled Avast but the pro…

Uprading Me to XP
by Guest N. Miller- 10 replies

I finally obtained a copy of the upgrade version of Windows XP Home Edition. The problem was with an old HP Pavilion 6745C running Windows Me. The OS is not geared to running a service, such as a mail server, with a long uptime. For whatever reason, Mercury/32 would cause Windows Me system resources to drop to 10%, or so, which, usually, locked up the computer, requiring a reboot. Since Windows XP does not appear to be afflicted with this problem, an upgraded seemed to be in order. To begin, I flashed the BIOS with new code, downloaded from the HP site before they pulled software for older products out of the support life. The flash was successful, but there wa…

Do You Have A Slow Running Computer?
by Guest jeremiah wright- 10 replies
Your computer was running fine, and now all of a sudden it is terrible slow. Sometimes the program just locks up, and will not work. Other times, the entire computer freezes. You know, the point where you must hold the power button down for 5 seconds to shut the machine off. Or, if you are running earlier versions of Windows, the infamous Blue Screen of Death appears. All of these are signs something is wrong with the internals of the computer, and this is causing you to have a slow computer. Think back, and see if you can remember installing something or uninstalling something since the computer starting acting funny. Most likely, you did. It might have even be…

My Pictures
by Guest Ed Meza- 10 replies

Well, I did it again! I had so many pictures that I opened different folders to identify the places, people, etc. This worked well. However, by mistake *I deleted the My Pictures folder*, which only had a dozen pics. Question is: How do I get the My Pictures folder back where it was? that is: Start|My Documents|My Pictures. I have tried System Restore and have also run the Restoration program. Neither of them worked, since the folder was deleted. Is there a command thru Start|Run to get back the My Pictures Folder (with the camera icon on the envelope)? Or any other way to place that folder back where is supposed to be? Does it really make a difference not to…

by Guest leemsbbe- 10 replies

It was working fine before. Then, I did a scan using Ad-aware 1.06 and deleted what ever it found. One of the items it cannot delete it, something in the TEMP folder. So I decided to to delete it from the TEMP folder, START>%TEMP%.> and deleted all the folders named something like this Axxxxxxx,TMP. After that I try to reboot, it will not go to desktop. The ME logo will appear and htere is a LED indicator light moving L to R. Thats just about as far as it goes. Now how can I get the ME to boot up/work properly as I do not wish to reformat it. Appreciate if someone can help please, thanks

Tab Issues
by Guest Honeysweet- 10 replies

Hi all, I am not sure which catagory this question belongs in, so pardon me if Im sending it to the wrong group... My problem is this: My TAB button on my keyboard will not move my cursor. For example, when signing into my Yahoo email, I'll input my username, and then press the tab button to move the cursor down so I can put in my password, but it will not move. Yet if I am on a regular webpage, the tab button will function just fine. I thought it was a keyboard problem, even though every other function worked just fine..I went and purchased a new keyboard anyway. But I am still having the same problem, so it cannot be the keyboard. I didnt always have th…

Anyone like Me?
by Guest cool_boy- 10 replies

Since here is the Windows Me user board, Iw ant to ask you something. Do you like Me? Because I like it. No matter what they say about it. It ran on a 1996 PC, designed for Windows 95. And it ran better than Windows 98. The only problem was with Windows Media Player and Movie Maker, caused by not enough memory or something like that, but that was OK, since the machine was older even then. I don't hate Windows Me, I even like it, no matter that it is the most hated Windows OS ever. I actually have seen more problems in XP Home than in Me. XP Pro> XP Home. XP Home is worse thgan Me in my opinion, whether XP Pro is better, but I just never got to like Wind…

Moving My Pictures

Hi Folks I'm always SO glad to find you guys here :-))) I'm still using and loving Me and have had no problems with the OS for ages but have just reinstalled it after yet another C drive failure--my third in two and a half years :-( Maxtors and Samsungs) I've been reinstalling my essential programs and helpers for a week now but before I reup and setup my favorite image handler (PhotoImpact) I thought I'd ask if anyone has ever tried moving My Pictures out of My Documents (where it's buried!) and what the results might have been. I notice that TweakUI offers the option to move it but I'm reluctant to try that without knowing if the default folder-view of …
