exception 0E
by Guest IsakAfrika- 9 replies

Windows ME, but in this respect probably no different from Windows 98. Random events when starting it: - booting from IDE 0 ... okay ... invalid system disk (can't even boot) - black screen with cursor (before desktop comes); it then sometimes reboots itself - can sometimes get into Safe Mode, will then always crash, usually within minutes but occasionally allowing to type a letter or two. It sometimes just freezes, at other times gives BSOD with : Windows Error / an exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C001DA in VxD called from 0028:C1493144 in VxD. This in one example - the details vary, though 0028:C seem to be always the same - Sometimes also the message…

lost alternate keyboards/languages!
by Guest Ogg- 3 replies

I'm not sure when this occurred, but I just realized that I lost my additional keyboard/languages in Control Settings. The config allows me to Add a particular language, but when I click Apply, it just bleeps and nothing happens. It just has the basic EnglishUS language/101-keyboard in the list. How can I get the functionality to add Languages back?

Changed .exe files
by Guest Gary Waterbury- 3 replies
I attempted to reinstall Windows ME from the Options direstory in Windows and then all my .exe files became .lnk files. I cannot rerun Setup.exe nor Restore nor run any .exe file. I cannot connect to the Internet. The good news is, I can boot up in Safe mode or Regular mode. And I can view pictures by right clicking on a file and clicking Open With -> Irfanview. The same with .htm files Open With -> Internet Explorer. I can't open .html files. My file associations must be deleted. I need to associate .exe files with a program to run them. A Ubuntu disk works ok, but I don't want to install it because it won't access the Internet. And it erases my hard disk. …

Re: Belarc Advisor

Re: Belarc Advisor When asking about the content of the new updates, I received this answer from Belarc Advisor's support service: "The security definitions update gets only a new security definitions file, describing the Microsoft security update bulletin in details the Advisor can use to see which security updates are missing and apply to your computer." For whatever it's worth and especially the Loom (I had a need to know myself). Obviously WinME and less wouldn't 'have' to be included when updating, since no newer updates are available, but anything beyond Me and upwards would be 'advised' to use the updated version. Hope this doesn't draw any 'frien…

'Allo ME World I'm still trying to recover from a snafu while replacing my Nv GeForce 4 Mx440 with their FX5200. I'm about halfway there - if I'm lucky. If you winME veterans would scan my plan and vette it against your experience, then I would very much appreciate it. Feel free to tell me I don't understand but, while you're at it, please point the way to the light switch.... I got the FX5200 running on a backup drive. Seemed so easy when I had the right stuff at the right time. Problem now is cleaning up the original system drive. I got the Nv driver series off their web. If I a driver cd/floppy came with the fx5200, I lost it. Or maybe that's why it…

Problem with computer freezing while using IE 6
by Guest The Moose- 4 replies
This is making me nuts. I can't figure out what is causing this behavior. I have Windows ME (fully patched and updated). I have an old NetVista 2276 (which, I think, is known for freezing problems). Mostly, it locks up (or freezes) when I am using Internet Explorer 6 (fully patched and updated) and loading some heavily graphic site like Mapquest or Google Maps or Webshots. I have a different harddrive than the one originally installed (so it's a used hardrive installed about two weeks ago). I have a different version of Windows ME. The original one (OEM) got destroyed when the hardrive failed. I've seen this freezing behavior when using Windows ME …

PC boots in Safe Mode, but no desktop icons
by Guest Jackpine- 7 replies

I am aksking for help on behalf of my friend whose PC is giving him big time trouble. I don't know what he did, but when he tries to reboot normally, a blue screen appears with the message Windows Protection Error. He can boot into Safe Mode, but there are no desktop icons, not event the Start icon or clock. Nothing except his wallpaper. Can he do a Windows ME repair installation? What else can he try? Without the Start icon, he can't even go into Run, msconfig. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. -- Not all those who wander are lost. J. R. R. Tolkein

New AVG AV 8.0 no longer supports Win 98/ME
by Guest O.J. Newman- 12 replies
Hello: I noticed on another group a message that AVG has just released a new v8.0 of its' anti-virus product. Unfortunately, the new v8.0 does *not* support Win 98/ME - only Win 2K and up. However, at least for the moment, AVG Free v7.5, which does support Win 98/ME, remains available. But at some point, if AVG follows past tradition, AVG Free 7.5 will be replaced with AVG Free v8.0. See: http://www.grisoft.com/ww.product-avg-anti-virus#tba2 and http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/us/frt/0#details . Cheers, O.J.
