My security suite has expired and the issue I have is that new versions I have seen do not include WME. I suspect some may work but would rather have input of your experiences. Please respond with which packages you have working under WME. Thanks, Norman

Windows ME - help disabling startup programs from dos prompt
by Guest jag53- 9 replies
- 3.9k views
I am working on a Windows ME system, that I cannot get to reboot. It is set to immediately scanreg, then has this UPS warning program that comes on. I try to get into msconfig immediately upon reboot but by the time that screen comes up it sends the system into immediate reboot again. I did a scanreg /restore back to a previous date but has not helped. Also went into system.ini from dos prompt and changed shell=explorer.exe to shell=progman.exe. It gets to the progman.exe and just starts to open, send it to an immediate reboot. Do not have system CD for Windows ME, but was able to create the start up disc. Any idea what file I could access from the…

Help: Getting Files Off My WindowsMe PC
by Guest Searcher7- 9 replies
I probably have the worst luck of anyone in history when it comes to anyhting associated with Microsoft. My first two computers when down taking everything with them. My secondary harddrives, my Jazz drives, my Zip drives, my other apps for transferring data between systems have all failed me when I needed them. I am now on my third internet pc and the warning signs are there. The pc is grossly outdated and I need another. Since my Zip drive no longer works with this pc either, I just picked up a 4.0G Sandisk Cruzer (since no other option is working), and I'm having difficulties getting my system to find and install it. I do not have "Add New Hardware" in…

C:\_Restore\TEMP
by Guest MrTom- 9 replies

A previous post made me curious about C:\_Restore\TEMP (Windows ME, of course), which I looked at and found thousands (I think about 3000) of files, some create/modified as early as 2001. I reduced the disk space for system restore and then disabled it, interspersed with a reboot or two. Then C:\_Restore\TEMP showed no files; it was empty. I then enabled system restore and did a reboot. A system checkpoint was created and I created another restore point. Now C:\_Restore\TEMP has 93 files, many with creation dates as early as 2003 and many with modified dates earlier (Feb 2008, March 2008, April 2008) than May 2008 (today's system date is May 2, 2008)…

Vista/w2k8/Aero etc
by Guest Shane- 9 replies

Well, I think I've reached a conclusion - in a telling timeframe. I think the Aero theme is very well done. That glassy look, more so with the Sidebar running, is superb - the best cosmetic job Microsoft have ever done (imo)! And when I had the Sidebar running, I put gadgets on it giving top to bottom - the countdown to the release of Server 2008, the Vista Orb clock, a small BBC News 24 feed - continuous live BBC News playing on the desktop in a tiny, little box - bloody marvellous! In the same category as having music playing while you work or surf? Beneath that I had - lets see...oh yes, a weather feed, set for this town and visually responding to the …

exception 0E
by Guest IsakAfrika- 9 replies
Windows ME, but in this respect probably no different from Windows 98. Random events when starting it: - booting from IDE 0 ... okay ... invalid system disk (can't even boot) - black screen with cursor (before desktop comes); it then sometimes reboots itself - can sometimes get into Safe Mode, will then always crash, usually within minutes but occasionally allowing to type a letter or two. It sometimes just freezes, at other times gives BSOD with : Windows Error / an exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C001DA in VxD called from 0028:C1493144 in VxD. This in one example - the details vary, though 0028:C seem to be always the same - Sometimes also the message…

Spybot Warning
by Guest webster72n- 9 replies

Just curious if anyone else has received this warning message from spybot. The following popped up in a dialog box after finishing the latest update from yesterday, with a red 'x' in the upper left corner: "An outsider did inject malicious code into this application! It is strongly recommended that you do a full check-up of your system, including anti malware and anti virus scans." Personally I am not concerned, with my pc being fully protected at all times. Is this one of those schemes Shane was talking about, or must it be taken seriously? Harry.

Windows Protection Error - HELP!
by Guest Jackpine- 9 replies
For some reason unknown to me, when my computer started up today, I got a blue screen with the message: Windows Protection Error. Please restart your system. When I restarted, the same message came up. The keyboard and mouse are disabled, and i had to turn off the pc by unplugging the power. I checked microsoft on another pc for this problem, and it listed a large number of possibilites as the cause. I did manage to do a thorough scan disk. Some errors were found and automatically fixed. I then defragmented the drive. When rebooting, the same message came up. Does anyone have any hints for troubleshooting this? Thanks. -- Not all those who…

Reinstalling Windows Me
by Guest Dapper Dan- 9 replies

It sounded like it was too easy!! Successfully reinstalled Windows Me this morning, subsequently taking several hours downloading all the updates. In the process of downloading required utilities, I ran into a memory problem which made no sense. However I have subsequently found out that previous partitions appear to have remained, although they are not recognized in MY COMPUTER. Background: This is a 10 GB Compaq Laptop which is shipped with the O/S on the C: drive and the Recovery System on D:. A couple of years ago, I had created a new partition to house all of my data files., OE Message store, tmp and temp. Currently, MY COMPUTER shows C: at 4.86 GB an…

Tax software for Win 9x/ME
by Guest O.J. Newman- 9 replies
Hello: I have been trying to respond to a request about tax software for Win 9x/ME. While other posts and replies have made it to this newsgroup, my attempts to post replies and new posts about this subject with a recommendation have not worked. So I'm going to try yet again, but with a slightly different approach. Instead of explicitly naming the tax software, I will break the name down into 2 parts to see if this message will post. There is a tax software that still supports Win 9x/ME. Do a Google (or other engine) search for: tax act. This should point you to the correct web site. This software is the #3 tax package behind the 2 more popular names. …

Need driver help for Win ME.....?
by Guest toonpup- 9 replies

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone here would be willing to help me.......... I'm trying to update my drivers (modem, usb, sound, COM ports). I've been to umpteen sites, and can't figure out which drivers are the right ones for my setup. Microsoft doesn't support my operating system anymore, so I'm stuck looking for the drivers at various other sites. There are a *huge* number of possibilities (or so it seems)...........I just want whichever drivers are the latest, BUT reliable!! I'm using: Windows ME Modem is: PCTEL Platinum V.90 Sound: ESS Allegro PCI Audio (WDM) USB is: 1.something, not 2.0. Can/should/do I upgrade to 2.0? If not, where can I …

A Better Browser?
by Guest Honeysweet- 8 replies

Hi all.. I have been using Windows ME for about 4 years now without a problem and like it alot.. but I'd like to use a different browser besides Internet Explorer. I seem to get lots of error msgs on it now.. and more recently an "Operation Aborted" message, even during something simple like going to Google. I was wondering what is good browser to use with Windows ME? Someone told me Opera, then someone told me FireFox, but I dont want to start installing all kinds of stuff then have problems later on or conflicts with other programs. I also saw one called "Avant", I've never heard of it before and was wondering also if anyone knew anything about it? T…

AdAware SE & 2007
by Guest Fred S *****- 8 replies
I have a friend using AdAware SE (free edition) I'm checking here because the new AdAware 2007 version appears to be only for Windows XP or Vista - NOT Win98, nor WinME. On the other hand, while the AdAware site says they are no longer supporting AAW SE after December 2007, there are Ref files for January and February. I've posted a request for info in the AAW forums but no replies so far. I'm asking here as I know there are many users here that are facing this issue too. Does anyone still use AAW SE? Are web updates working on WinME? IF not, do manual updates work? Thanks, Fred
