Ad-aware Plus 2007
by Guest shanebeatson@gmail.com- 8 replies

Okay, I don't like saying 'I was right' - after all it usually means something negative. But I was - Lavasoft have gone back on the promise of lifelong updates to those who bought Ad-aware Plus back in, in my case, late-2000. They call it a different product - as I predicted they would - which those like myself may - whoopee do! - upgrade to at a 40% discount! Funny, because it's going to cost them more than they save with this cheap attempt to renege on the original deal they made with, among doubtless many others, me. It really is time everybody realized businesses in the security field that renege on their deals are as bad as the people they supposedly p…

Registry been changed, now error message, and cannot access regist
by Guest jgl1959- 8 replies

Hi! My Windows ME machine suddenly began posting this error message "Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page". The computer will not boot up all the way, and I cannot use the Start button or access files. I googled the error message, and found a fix involving changing the registry key. To get to the registry, I opened the computer in Safe Mode, went to the MS-DOS prompt, and ran REGEDIT. Everything opened up fine, but I cannot open the HKEY_CURRENT_USER line in the registry - it gives me an error message. So my question is, does anyone know another way for me to get into and edit my registry? And i…

System Defrag
by Guest Ed Meza- 8 replies

Hello, I would appreciate a clarification on the following inquiry: What is the difference, if any, while optimizing the system in this fashion: 1) I usually optimize the Win Me system in Safe Mode thru the Maintenance Wizard. Then do a restart. 2) Today, after doing the above, I clicked on My Computer and optimized C disk. I found out that there were lots of gaps and it took just a long time to optimize drive C. Shouldn't the Maintenance Wizard take care of the defrag? Why does drive C show like nothing has been done when defraging thru "My Computer"? I hope that this query makes sense. I seem to recall that some users prefer to defrag via differ…

System Restore
by Guest Dapper Dan- 8 replies

Can anyone enlighten me with respect to how System Restore works. In a Clean Boot environment, I uninstalled Spybot 1.4 and deleted remnants (there were quite a few files and folders remaining). Then downloaded and installed Spybot 1.5 and upon rebooting, I immediately ran into resource problems. I think the problem is related to either me deleting the remnant files after uninstalling V1.4 or the fact that the new version is running in the background. In any event, not finding a way to disable that feature, I elected to run a restore point to yesterday. Upon reboot, I was surprised to see Spybot version 1.5. I had understood that SR does not affect dat…

Adding to the registry from a disc
by Guest carl5544@aol.co.uk- 8 replies

I recently had to reinstall Windows ME. I had previously backed up the hard disk (by setting it as a slave in another machine and transferring everything to DVDs) and had hoped to restore everything by simply copying everything from the DVDs back onto the same hard disk. But for some reason it wouldn't boot ("invalid system disk" message). So I reinstalled Win ME and used the DVDs to manually put back most of my data. However, there are some registry entries (presets for a photo program) that I need to restore to the new registry but I don't know how to do this. I know how to use regedit to make copies of registry keys from the C drive, but how do I get them f…

XP Display Issue With Access 2K
by Guest IC_Clearly- 8 replies

I am running Access 2K on an XP Pro machine. The background color for the switchboard startup screen and all forms/screens are white, not their regular colors. There are many versions of this applications running on at least 50 machines and we have never seen this problem. Further, all reports that display to the screen have a gray background -- not white. When printed to a printer they are okay. I checked the desktop property settings for Windows and they all seem normal. And, this computer is not having problems with any other programs. The only Office program on the machine is Access 2K. Any ideas? Thanks. -- IC

Re: Moving My Pictures - Mike M

Re: Moving My Pictures - Mike M Hi Mike I finally decided I really need to have My Pictures living on my desktop, but before TweakUI will do the deed it pops up this scary warning: "Carelessly changing a special folder may render your system unusable. For example, don't set two special folders equal to each other, or set a special folder equal to a system folder like the Fonts folder. Continue changing special folders?" If I move the My Pictures folder to the desktop it will then reside: inside the Desktop folder, which is inside the Windows folder, which is inside the C: folder; instead of where it is now: inside the My Documents folder which is insid…

RE: Just upgraded to vista and have several problems

RE: Just upgraded to vista and have several problems Hi I just upgraded to Vista about 2 weeks ago and I am having several problems with it. (1) With UAC on I can't open Itunes. If I turn off UAC then I can open Itunes with no problem and use my ipod with it. (2) When viewing videos on youtube or msn I can't hear the audio with UAC on but when I turn it off I can hear the audio just fine. I am sure there are other problems that I have not found yet. So my question is; should I reinstall Vista on my computer and do a hard install? When I upgraded to vista I ran the HP Upgrade Assistant and then installed Windows Vista Home Premium Express Upgrade. …

WinME suggestions wanted..
by Guest Ogg- 7 replies

I am looking for advice on transferring an existing WinME system to another (preferrably NEW) set of hardware. I have an older WInME pc (which I was planning to retire and "convert" to Linux) but I feel that the whole pc needs serious replacement. Particularly, the video subsystem is showing age (at boot up the characters are jumbled(1), and sometime the screen boots to BLANK(2)). I can fix (1) with a simple ctrl-alt-del at bootup. But when (2) happens, it's the most annoying since the next boot is only possible in SafeMode and 16 colours! The latter happend recently; I ended up re-installing the older WinME drivers for the video card - and it wasn't easy! (o…

Connect via dialup
by Guest Corday- 7 replies

Modem works fine (can fax etc.). Under add/delete programs/windows resources "Communications" 6.3 meg is grayed out and when opened shows 0.0 megs for phone/ dial up options. Can't connect to Internet (I'm on a different computer now). Tried to open a new TCP/IP protocol, but it always reverts to only the non-address ones already installed. Port 110 is probably where everything works from (or not?). -- Corday

Have memory leaks? Hibernate...
by Guest Bob- 7 replies
I'd mentioned a few days back that Hibernate seems to do an excellent job of cleaning up memory leaks altho my hibernations (only) averaged about 10 seconds. Like catnaps, these short hibernation sessions seemed to really revitalize the system performance. I'm sorry if I'm beating on a dead horse but I have seen no mention of a refreshing and memory cleansing associated with hibernate. A reboot has always been needed to get such a refreshing effect. I have to report a couple errata... First the (System Monitor) reported available memory after Hibernating is 366 MB, not 300 MB (on a 512 MB RAM system). Second, and probably more significant, the nature of my hi…

Does the lack of 48-bit LBA mean: 1. That Win ME (and 98) can use hard drives larger than 137 MB, but that only 137 MB will be recognized and available for use - or - 2. That Win ME (and 98) will not even recognize drives larger than 137 MB, and thus can not use them? Could you please clarify how this works? TIA, O.J.

Harddrive diagnostic tool

I would like to run a diagnostic tool to test the condition of the harddrive on our 6-7 year old Compaq laptop. It's been several years since I did this test and I have forgotten how to go about it. I understand Hitachi has taken over IBM's Travelstar line however I can't seem to find the specific tool for our model. I believe ours is an IBM Travelstar 10 GB, 4200 rpm. Can someone point me in the right direction. Thanks Dan

PC boots in Safe Mode, but no desktop icons
by Guest Jackpine- 7 replies

I am aksking for help on behalf of my friend whose PC is giving him big time trouble. I don't know what he did, but when he tries to reboot normally, a blue screen appears with the message Windows Protection Error. He can boot into Safe Mode, but there are no desktop icons, not event the Start icon or clock. Nothing except his wallpaper. Can he do a Windows ME repair installation? What else can he try? Without the Start icon, he can't even go into Run, msconfig. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. -- Not all those who wander are lost. J. R. R. Tolkein

Re: Internet connection problem

Re: Internet connection problem In many others it has been like the dawning of the day, when at first but a little light appears, and it may be presently hid with a cloud; and then it appears again, and shines a little brighter, and gradually increases, with intervening darkness, till at length it breaks forth more clearly from behind the clouds. And many are, doubtless, ready to date their conversion wrong, throwing by those lesser degrees of light that appeared at first dawning, and calling some more remarkable experience they had afterwards, their conversion. This often, in a great measure, arises from a wrong understanding of what they have always been tau…

nvidia GeForce 2 440 MX not cooperating
by Guest Ogg- 7 replies

My ME box must have heard me talking about replacing it with Linux.. the standard Nvidia GeForce2 440 MX display is (once AGAIN!) only booting to a blank screen now. The only way I could initially fix that was to boot to SafeMode, then force the setting to 16 colours there, then do a full shutdown (not restart! but a full OFF). Then at next bootup, I could at least get a non-blank display, albiet in 16 colours. :(( I tried reinstalling the nvidia 440MX drivers from a saved set of files on the hdd. The install reports "successful", but at next bootup - blank screen! I had found a set numbered as version 81.98 for the 440MX card a few years ago fro…
