by Guest bob- 6 replies

My OS is down, has been corrupted, and is not recoverable, according to Dell tech support. They recommend a fresh install but my data is not backed up and I cannot lose it. My question is, is a parallel install a viable option? Or is it too risky for someone who is not technically advanced? Thanks, Bob

DVD RW Vista 64 Compatibility
by Guest Seamus- 3 replies

Can someone please tell me a DVD-RW drive that properly burns media under Vista Ulimate 64 Bit? I have a Sony DRU-170C (which has a "Works with Vista" sticker by the way) which does NOT burn under Vista 64 bit. It works just fine under 32 bit, but not 64. So, does anyone know of a burner that really does work fully with Vista 64 bit? If so, please let me know so I can trade mine in for one that actually burns.

DL360 G3 server boots after 30 minutes
by Guest Tony Davis- 3 replies
I have performed various boot scenarios to locate the slow boot time. I have found out that if I have USB enabled in the BIOS, then i must have a USB device plugged in to my server for it to boot normally. If I unplug the device and reboot(multiple times) it hangs after the splash screen with the animated progress bar. If I leave USB enabled, boot into safe mode, it hangs at acpitabl.dat.... Now get this.. If I disable USB in the BIOS, then it boots up fine. NO hangs at all. Only problem is, I can't use any USB devices. Also, while windows is running, if I unplug the USB device, I get an unknown USB device error, which leads me to believe my USB…

Missing display Adaptor Driver in Device Manager Vista64
by Guest Sonisphere- 8 replies
I installed Vista 64 business on a MacPro which has a 7300GT video card in it. Thi machine previously had XPhome without fault. Display went to 4bit color low rez. The 7300GT reported a lack of resources in device manager. I Found and IRQ conflict with PC express bus slot 3. Nothing was in this slot so I disabled it and rebooted. After restart display res was set to 1280 * 1024 no problem with 32bit color. I can not load console software for the video card (for multiscreen support) due the fact that although the 7300GT is working it has disappeared from the device manager list. If I recreate the IRQ conflict the driver reappears with the error but …

64bit driver for Lexmark x2250
by Guest Dillinger- 3 replies

I have recently built a new pc and used xp pro 64 as the o/s. Everything is fine other than I can't load the software or drivers for my Lexmark x2250, as they are not compatible with xp pro 64. I have contacted Lexmark, who say they do not have any 64 bit drivers available for this model and I was wondering if anyone had had the same problem and, more importantly, do they have a resolution to this? The last thing I want to do is to have to get a new printer/scanner Thanks

2003 x64 default print drivers
by Guest Kpark- 5 replies

Does anyone know of a list of the default, out of the box print drivers that ship with x64 Windows 2003? I'm trying to determine the level of out of the box printer support in x64 as opposed to x32. I need to know what drivers are included in x32 but not in x64 and vice versa. To my surprise, I can't find this information anywhere. Any help greatly appreciated.

64-bit still memory limited?
by Guest Mark- 10 replies

I'm probably out of my league, but when did that ever stop someone from posting. (Yes, there is a question at the end of the post.) [Note: Also posted in General Discussion.] Computers have three main buses: Control Bus Data Bus Address Bus Control Bus is 16 bits wide and tells the address bus what method of communication is required (32-bit or 48-bit)for the device currently seeking to control the data bus. Data Bus is 64-bits wide, but typically cannot find anything to talk to wider than 32-bits other than the main processor which for most systems is also working in 32-bit mode. Address Bus is 48-bits wide and typically operates in one of two m…

Hi All, Why does Internet Explorer 64 Edition work with Windows Update within the Windows XP Professional x64 Edition operating system? Update saids you need to use the Internet Explorer 32-bit version instead. How come? Will this hold true for Vista 64-bit as well? Or Vista 64 Bit uses a different method in accessing Update. -- thecreator

Vista Ultimate x64 Performance Issues
by Guest Mike Benton- 2 replies

I have a new laptop with Vista Ultimate x64. Aside from the base installation I installed Office 2007 Professional and I use Yahoo! music for downloads. With my new laptop, most of the time I will power it on to browse the web. I hit the power button walk away for about 15-20 minutes and usually it is done doing whatever it does that keeps the utilization at 100%. I did install Procman.exe and have watched the activity. To me it looks like svchost.exe reads and writes about every file on the laptop. Now I've seen 3rd party software out there that claims to enhance the performance of Vista. From what I remember, this is partially accomplished by 'twea…

New ATI Catalyst Driver

This is a highly recommended update, since it resolves a potential root-kit vulnerability ("Purple Pill") in the ATI driver code.
