Return back to 32bit
by Guest Andreas- 4 replies

I am setting up an HP Laptop with AMD Turion processor which didn't have a Windows CD when purchased. During initial setup, I selected the Windows Vista 64x option. Later, I faced many compatibility issues and I want to switch back to 32-bit Vista. There was no cd supplied for HP or Windows. How can I re-install the 32-bit option?. I selected the recovery option of HP but this just wiped off the disc and installed the same 64bit os.

DirectX End-User Runtimes (Aug 2007)
by Guest Carlos- 4 replies

Microsoft officially released an update to its DirectX runtimes. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=cb7397f3-0949-487b-9247-8fee451bf952&DisplayLang=en This download, and installation, should usually not be necessary. Manufacturers of games should include these updates bundled in their games in order to make them functional. The truth is that they don't do that and I have found a couple of instances when installing this MS update solved the absence of some DX dlls. Vista and XP x64 compatible. Carlos

Hi, I have Windows XP x64. I would like to be able to hibernate with the computer this is installed on. When I look in Power Option Properties there is no Hibernate tab. I open up a command line window and type: powercfg /hibernate on and get the response: Hibernation failed with the following error: The request is not supported. The following items are preventing hibernation on this system. The system is running in PAE mode, and hibernation is not allowed in PAE mode. Is there some way I can use a different mode other than PAE mode so I can Hibernate this machine. I have 4Gb ram and a core duo processor. This machine has an LSI megaRAI…

I have a windows 2003 64 Bit Evaluation Server installed running SQL2005 for a specific application. We were forced to upgrade immediately from 32bit due to a requirement from our outside vendor. We used the Evaluation version until our VLK key came in. We now have the VLK and would like to upgrade the license. How do I do this without screwing up the SQL 2005 install which is running our application? Thank you! Fred

OK to install 32-bit XP on AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core?
by Guest Gilles Ganault- 4 replies
Hello I just bought an Acer desktop that I promptly cleaned of Vista for XPSP2. Thing is, I had a license for the 32-bit version of XPSP2. In a week, it has rebooted on my a couple of times, although I haven't installed any extra-hardware. I have a couple of questions: - is installing 32-bit XP on that CPU an issue? Should I reformat, and install the 64-bit version instead? - is there a set of utiliies, either DOS- or Linux-based that I could run from a USB key or a CD drive to stress the CPU and RAM so make sure they're OK before investigating further? Thank you.

Debugging 64 Bit: Hello World, "Workstation service not started".
by Guest Skybuck Flying- 0 replies

Hello, I was very curious to perform my first 64 bit build with Visual Studio 2005. I am particularly interested in seeing the disassembly of the 64 bit (cpu) instructions =D However I was surprised by the following error message when trying to debug it (after having created a new target/x64 configuration setting): "Workstation service not started". Apperently this service is needed for debugging x64 applications ??? Why ??? I can run the executable without debugging. I shall now enable the workstation service if I run into any more problems I will let these two newsgroup know ;)>D Bye, Skybuck.

Decreasing throughput & increasing CPU when writing a huge file 20
by Guest CrashHunter- 6 replies
I have a Windows 2003 Server x64 Enterprise Edition with SP2 with 4GB RAM and an application writing a huge file. The write throughput is quite good in the beginning (~33MB/s) but it keeps decreasing, while the CPU keeps increasing. In the beginning, the Kernel CPU (both in the Task Manager and the Processor\% Privileged Time in performance monitor) is pretty low, but it keeps increasing. Total CPU is ~ 50%, with Kernel taking ~8% in the beginning, while later on, the Total CPU reaches 80-90% with Kernel using almost all of that CPU; at that point, the throughput is very low. Other numbers: the System Cache (in Task Manager) reaches very soon 3.5 GB and …

P.D:The network card is a Hercules HWGPCI-54 with Ralink RT2500 Chipset. Thank you in advance for your attention.

10 calls to microsoft so far...
by Guest Craig- 6 replies

Here is my situation: I was part of the technology advancement program (32bit to 64bit upgrade) a couple years back. Recently I went to reinstall windows x64 and and my disk is corrupt. (There was a link provided to download the .iso in the program.) The link no longer works (obviously) so I downloaded the latest version assuming my key would work. No go. It installed the trial OK but will not accept my key. I have spoke to about 10 different people at Microsoft who have no idea about this program or how to support x64. I finally got ahold of someone who was helpful but says that since there was no disc provided initially then I have no options and…

MSI Package Builder
by Guest Rich Martinez (RRCC)- 0 replies

Hello, I'm using the package builder that is on the Windows server 2000 CD to create MSI packages for programs that do not have them. I have created an image of a computer that just has the Operating System. I actually have 2 one for XP and one for Vista. My question is this: Each time I create a package do I need to start over (i.e. with just the OS) to do further packages or can I just move forward from that point (i.e. create the first package, then the second, etc without using a clean system? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Rich

Hi all Problem is quite simple (Windows XP Pro x64 with all updates) computer is quite fast when it has 4GB memory 6GB it slows down 8 GB it stops responding at least after soundcard drivers have been installed, but has very poor performance also before that. I suppose this has somethin to do with PCI memory remapping, but as it is Intel MB it has no such option on bios, but what I have found allready it should be on by default. I would also like to know if any one has working system for Intel Core2Duo processor and Intel chipset with 8GB memory fx. Asus, Intel MB's Computer also has nVidia Quadro3450 graphics adapter with most recent drivers may that caus…

Hi, I have contacted Microsoft about the hotfix for the BSOD. I was told that the hotfix was included in SP1, which I have installed already. I get the error Page_Fault_Not_In_Correct_PageArea. The server does not boot up right away. It restarts in a cyclical fashion and finally kicks over where I have to login. Once logged in the BSOD shows and the rebooting occurs. Any ideas as to what I can do to correct situation? Thanks -- Hutty

Can anyone pls tell me how to make the dreamscenes run at startup? I updated the drivers for my graphics card (nVIDIA GEFORCE GO 7600 GS - 512 MB) but still the dreamscenes appear paused during startup. I am explicitly running dreamscenes by "right clicking" on desktop and selecting the option "play dreamscenes (preview)". My system config: 2 GHz Core2Duo, 2 GHz RAM, 512 MB graphics card, more than 100 GB free hard disk space. Pls help.
