upgrading before installing Windows XP Professional x64?
by Guest smathews- 2 replies

From Charlie Russel's article "Exploring Windows XP Professional x64 Edition": "If you're running Windows XP Home Edition and have x64 hardware, you can move to Windows XP Professional x64 Edition when it's available. But you'll need to upgrade from Windows XP Home Edition to Windows XP Professional Edition first." My question is why do you need to upgrade to Windows XP Professional Edition before you install the 64 bit one? I thought all Windows XP Professional x64 installations were clean installs, making the previous os irrelevant (?). Any insight is greatly appreciated. Any

My settings change by themselves
by Guest Denise- 2 replies

Hi, I have customized my settings. Several time a week, my settings change. Fonts and their sizes are different, shadows under icons are no longer there, the size of buttons and scroll bars change, etc. It happens while my computer is doing different things and even when it's been idle for 1/2 hour. I've save My Favorite Theme but after my settings change and I click on My Favorite Theme, it doesn't change things back to my settings. The biggest problem with this happening is that all characters on the keyboard have different spaces, for lack of a better word. An example, albeit a bad example, is that if I typed the word "different," it could look…

Vista 64 bit or Windows XP x64 edition ? 1 2 3 4
by Guest Royston H- 79 replies

My 120 days of eval are nearly up. I have found the XP 64 bit version of windows the most stable and reliable version of Windows I've ever used and have had only one BSOD when I was overclocking my graphics card, so not really a microsoft o/s issue. I mainly use the computer for office applications, photoshop, video editing and playing FSX. Given that I can get an OEM copy of Vista 64 bit for less than the OEM 64bit XP pro, I am likely to run with Vista. I'd like to hear from people who have used both in anger and see if any valid arguements exist for sticking with XP, say it's considerably more stable etc, given that long term the future is with v…

Few problems on Vista Ultimate x64
by Guest TMA- 1 reply

I'm dual booting Vista Ultimate x64 and my previous operating system XP Professional x86. The problems I am describing here occurs only on Vista and even though it's related to other programs, they don't happen on XP, so I thought it was better to post them on 64bit forum. I've downloaded all the updates for my system. 1) I use Outlook 2007 for e-mail and notes (I have notes links on my desktop for easier access). The problem is that whenever I open Outlook for the first time, it won't ask for my password ever again until I reboot. I have posted similar question on Outlook.General forum, but they pointed me to a website about this error on Office 97. It…

Windows 2008 / Matrix Storage / RAID-5 Problem?
by Guest John Connett- 2 replies
I have been trying to install the Windows 2008 Server Enterprise Edition, Beta 3 onto a system containing a Supermicro PDSM4 motherboard (BIOS: R 1.1a) with four SATA disks. The system supplier is no longer in business. The BIOS is configured for Intel rather than the Adaptec controller code base and the BIOS utility creates and recognizes a four disk RAID-5 array. During installation I used a CD-ROM with the driver from Intel Matrix Storage (7.5.0.1017 6/4/2007). The file "iastor.inf" was selected. The installation ran to completion but when the system reboots it briefly flashes a blue screen then reboots again. A safe mode boot fails after displa…

Missing 1 HDD and 1 DVDrom, not in device manager
by Guest Stevie V- 6 replies
I installed x64 on a secondary hard drive last night and now I cant see one of my 3 HDDs and one of my DVD drives. I found all x64 drivers for my motherboard and have them installed, all the devices in Device Manager are now working properly. Both missing drives ARE detected by the BIOS and on POST. Both missing drives ARE visible when I boot XPx32 from the primary drive. Both missing drives are NOT listed in device manager or "Disk Management" utility. The 3rd (missing) HDD is attached to the embedded 3rd party Promise IDE/RAID controller as a Stand-alone drive and is detected in BIOS, on POST and in XPx32. The x64 drivers for the promise controller are …

Hi, I always thought there should be a very good reason for this not being actual in Windows, but maybe there isnt none, indeed: + to be able to use arrow keys to move the mouse cursor. ++ u could have a key to ignite it and the number of clicks on the key before holding it to set the speed of that movement. +++ com'on move. Argh! Now I did it. System only boots in safe mode
by Guest miso@sushi.com- 4 replies

Working on this Photoshop problem, I decided to run "filemon" to see what files were being accessed. My systems is set up with most user file on E and the system on C. I noticed from filemon that the system was picking up some system files on E. Now it turns out this PC was dual booted with XP in addition to X64. When I did a system restore, I got confused between systems since the hard drive partitions got renamed. So I zipped up the "wrong" program_files directory, i.e. on the E drive, zipped them, then deleted the files. After this, the PC won't boot except in safe mode. I restored (unzipped) the files in safe mode, but that didn't fix the boot issue. That is,…

Vista 64x
by Guest Gilb- 4 replies

I recently bought a laptop with pre-installed software. When I set the system up it gave me the option of installing "Windows Vista Business" or "Windows Vista Business 64x". I went for the standard Vista Business, but I'm now wondering whether I should Have chosen the 64x version. What are the implications of runing the 32 bit version with a 64 bit processor? Is it possible to change from the 32 bit version to the 64, and how will this benefit me? Many thanks Gilb

Recycle bin global setting bug?
by Guest Thierry- 1 reply
I have Windows XP x64 installed on two physical machine. I want to globally configure the recycle bin to "Do not move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted", and "Do not display delete confirmation dialog". But Windows just act as if the opposite was configured. Files go in the Recycle Bin, and the delete confirmation comes up each time I empty it. I have tried several workarounds that don't work. (I hate using the recycle bin!) I am thinking that maybe there is a registry key for this? Anyway, I think this is a bug...
