How secure is this implementation?
by Guest Chris- 3 replies

I'm working on a project for a not-for-profit organization. I've been provided with a W2K3 server at a hosting company. I'm the administrator of the server. The server is in its own workgroup (i.e., non-AD) configuration. The server is not behind any type of hardware firewall; there is no VPN in place, either. I connect to the server from the Vista PC in my home office via RDP using an extremely long and complex password. I also connect to the server from my Windows XP SP2 laptop. I believe I have the newest version of the RDP client on both clients. I installed SP2 and all of the latest updates on the server. I have the Windows Firewall on the server…

TS Profiles

Good morning! Okay, Okay......I know that several of you in here will kill me for this! Vera, Patrick, Jeff,.....sorry...but I did not do this!!!! I am simply trying to fix some things and want to make sure that I do not break things in the process.... Anyway, a client has a small Terminal Server farm (two servers). A Terminal Server Profile was not implemented. Yikes! I know! Anyway, most are using a Thin Client but some still use a PC / Laptop to access the Terminal Server. Some of the of these good people are Sales Folks who are almost never in the office and log on to their laptops locally (read: the "log on to:" part is populated with "myma…

help: ts gateway keeps rejecting user credential
by Guest shimh- 9 replies
- 1.2k views
I am setting up a terminal service gateway in Windows 2008 domain in our lab. I followed the step-by-step tutorial. I had this problem: the ts gateway keeps rejecting user credential (The logon attempt failed). I enter the credential in this format: domain_name\username, and password. Occasionally the ts gateway works, usually after the server is restart . With unknown reason, it does not work sometime later. Any idea on the cause and diagnostic steps? Thanks a lot.

TS Licensing Issues
by Guest Rosewood- 6 replies

I'm very green to TS and this is my first TS deployment. I thought everything was good to go. I added our 10 licenses as per user CALs since we have 6 users that may jump between 12 different computers. The CALs are installed and I thought everything was good to go since everyone was connecting w/o a problem. Today I was told they are getting a message when they login that their license expires in 4 days. So I went to the Terminal Service Licensing window. Sure enough it shows a bunch of Temporary Licenses issued and 10 User CALs available. So how do I get these user CALs tied to a specific user and get them off the temp licenses?

Slow Performance issue
by Guest David G. Hoch- 7 replies

I'm running Terminal Sevices on a Windows 2003 Standard server. Fairly powerful box (1xQuad-Core Proc; 4GB RAM; plenty of fast HD storage space available) Users are seeing poor performance at times, even when only one or two users are connected to the box. Some of the performance issues reported include: - Slow opening of data files (.PDF, .DOC, etc.) - Once opened, slow and/or choppy scrolling from page to page in documents - Choppy and broken up video streaming In order to fix the video streaming problem I've upgraded the server's built-in video card to a card that has 256MB of RAM onboard. It made a very small improvement, but not enough to make the…

Add regkey to TS users HKCU
by Guest Al Williams- 15 replies

Windows Server 2003 SP2 TS. I need to add a simple registry key to all my TS users HKCU hive. I googled and found an old post from Vera and tried adding "regedit newreg.reg" command to my login scripts but the users get a permission error - "Cannot import newreg.reg: Error accessing the registry." . It seems they aren't allowed to add new keys to their HKCU hive (it doesn't work manually either unless they are admins). Short of giving them all admin permissions until it's done is there another way? I know this must be simple but I can't find a solution that works. I'd rather not get into GPO's or VBscript if I can help it... Thanks -- Alla…

Terminal Services Basics
by Guest Anwar Mahmood- 6 replies

Hi All, Hope someone can help with a basic question. It's probably been covered many times, but I can't find anything substantial or definitive... Looking at Terminal Services on Windows Server 2003/Citrix Presentation Server 4.5 for the first time. I'm uncertain of the correct sequence of actions to build a farm. There will be multiple servers, but only running Office and one or two other (low intensity) applications. The most logical sequence to *me* is - establish "infrastructure" (licensing, data store, etc) - install Windows Server 2003 SP2 - install and customise the applications - test the applications (eg with a standard user account…

Not all printers are showing up using RemoteAPP
by Guest Saucer Man- 23 replies
We are using RemoteAPP with Server 2008. At a remote location, our user is trying to print from the app but when he goes to select the printer from the app, only a few of his printers are showing up. If he goes to START-SETTINGS-PRINTERS, all his printers are there. I can't find anything in common with the printers that do show up in the RemoteAPP. One of the printers lives at the office, another lives at his remote location, the other are the Microsoft Document Writers. He really needs to printer to a PDFPrinter that is on his laptop. This PDF printer converts the documents to a PDF File. Anyone know how to correct this? -- Thanks!

How do you prevent the security warning "unknown publisher" for all users?
by Guest Saucer Man- 24 replies

When a user launches a RemoteAPP program, he gets an Open File - Security Warning. It says "The publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software?" The dialog prompt refers to the drive letter mapping and the .exe in question. How can I set up the terminal server so these prompts do not happen to any user? -- Thanks!

MSTSC Freezes on Vista connecting to Windows 2008 Server
by Guest henrik.frolund- 0 replies

I have a mysterious problem on my Vista Business SP1 - Danish When I try to connect to one of our Windows 2008 servers, mstsc hangs on the Vista. I have tried to run the mstsc as an administrator and with the /admin but with no luck. I can connect smoothly to our Windows 2003 servers - it is only the 2008 servers that is giving me the struggle. The problem is as follows: I start the mstsc with windows key+R then run the command mstsc /admin. The start window is showing up, and I type in the server i want to connect to, then i choose "Another account" and type in my admin username with domain prefix and password. Now the mstsc window stops running (no…

I am still in the need for some assistance. I'd like to thank those who replied to my previous entry. Here is what I'm trying to do, what I've done so far, and some things that people have suggested. I am an Americorp Volunteer working on a technology infrastructure update for an Independent Living Center. This is my first experience using Server 2003 and Terminal Server. I have implemented the Terminal Server and all appears to be working as planned with the exception of the following. We have 4 Satellite offices; each one has their own Network Printer. (Same Brand, Brother 2070n) These printers are assigned a static IP address and are plugged directly …

I am having an issue installing programs consoled in and logged in as admininstrator. It keeps giving the message of "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation" I don't know of any policy set to prevent this from even happening for the administrator. I have went to the lengths of removing the group policy for the users and trying it again without any luck. Does anyone know how to reset everything on that server or any suggestions. Thanks, TM

Application caching
by Guest Toni Van Remortel- 20 replies
Hi all, We have set up Server 2008 with Terminal Server for about 10 users. All those users use the same application (a single exe from a network share). The drawback is that when we update the application (in-house development), we need to ask all TS users to log out before they can use the new version. Somehow, the exe is cached by the TS server as long as someone has it open, and TS does not check if the exe on the network share is updated. Is there a way to disable this behavior? When we update the application, a simple close and reopen should open the new version, not the old cached version. Thanks a lot. -- Regards, Toni Van Remortel

Hi, I have exact the problem as described here, so I just post these links: http://www.itexperience.net/2008/03/13/quick-access-toolbar-in-office-2007-and-roaming-profiles/ http://www.technologyquestions.com/technology/microsoft-office/232919-office-2007-roaming-qat-quick-access-toolbar.html OS Terminal Server: W2K3 enterprise Windows Domain: W2K3 Microsoft should be aware of this, right?! It looks a small enhancement to write the settings to: %appdata%\Microsoft\Office Instead of: C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Office The goal of this post is to reach Microsoft so that they are able to route this info…

Hi and Thanks for helping. We have a W2K3 Server that is accessed by to local PC's and 2 remote PC's Obviously at this point onlt 2 people at a time can be in. We are expanding and I am going to assign the server Terminal Server Role and add 5 CALS. I see that somewhere along installation a few years ago, I gave this server a role of Domain Controll which I see is directly connected to Active Directory. Do I need The Domain Controller Role. All we will be doing is accessing a main software application. NO email, or web hosting at this point. If I turn off Domain Controller to save memory, will the 2 users remote or local, still have normal acce…

REMOTE DESKTOP CONNECTION
by Guest HMO Fallen Angel- 19 replies

Hi eveybody, Before, we used to have a windows 2000 as our domain controller and it was the terminal server too, and we can RDC to this server. Then, we got a new server, installed win 2003 server 'migrated' our 2000 domain to a 2003 domain and right now they are co-existing. We did this because we need to move our application from the win 2000 server to the new 2003 server. Right now users are connecting to the 2000 server using using terminal server without any problems. I have already installed terminal server and its licenses on the new win 2003 server but when i try to connect using RDC i'm getting the error: "To log on this remote computer, you mu…

Single server scenario workable?
by Guest anthonyx26- 6 replies
I have some clients who, for budgetary reasons, only have a single server (WS2008) in their office but would still like to have the benefits and security of using TS for their employees. Is it possible to configure a single server as a locked down TS (using GPOs) for use by multiple remote users? It's currently not configured as a domain controller, but I suppose could be. I realize a single server is not ideal...in fact I always recommend and have always configured scenarios with at least a separate TS and DC and file server. - anthonyx26

SHaring a MS access frontend amongst all TS users
by Guest Jason Woodbury- 15 replies

I have an Acess front end I am trying to share with all users. I would like to know if there is a way for TS or scripting wise to implement 1 access front end and have it make a copy from a set location to every users desktop everytime they login. I am tired of having to delete every single users front end everytime it updates(which it seems to do frequently). As it stands, I have 1 copy of the front end on everyones desktop, I would like for them to be able to access a master copy and the server to automatically download a fresh copy everytime they login and delete it when they logout. Is there a way to go about this so I can simply be able to update …

Remote Desktop in Vista
by Guest Eric- 6 replies

I am trying to connect to an XP Pro machine from a Vista Home Premiuim machine via Remote Desktop Connection. It works just fine behind my router or without it when I try to connect from a Windows 2000 machine. So that leaves me with the indication that there is a setting in Vista that is blocking it. I get the message "can't connect to the remote computer." Any thoughts on how to fix this?

Windows Server 2008 and redirected printer names
by Guest Saucer Man- 7 replies

Is there a way to prevent the redirected printers in a client session from displaying a number which changes after the word "redirected"? This is causing an issue with applications that remember the name of the last printer used. The application might remember "redirected 2" and the next time a client connects the print job fails because it is now called redirected 3". -- Thanks!

Hi, I have a 32bit 2008 Enterprise TS running and I'm having issues with Easy print. The clients are XP SP3 with .NET 3.5, or Vista SP1 with .NET 3.5. When a user logs on, he sees the redirected printers without me having to install any driver. Great... Now when someone prints something, the text comes out garbled. (pictures are ok) I uploaded a few examples I scanned to my personal webpage @ http://users.telenet.be/obsession2001/easyprint.zip (348kb) * Mail1.jpg = Printout Outlook 2007. Headers appear fine. Text is jibberish except a few small words at the end (part of my signature - not entire signature is ok) * Excel.pdf = printout Excel 2003. …

How to display Remote Apps in TS WEB Access based on AD Group memberskip?
by Guest John Myren- 2 replies
Is it possible to offer access to Remote Apps based on membership in AD Security Groups? Lets say if you are a member of the App_Office group, you will se only the Office programs, and if you also are a member off the App_Admin group, you will also se some extra Remote Apps, just for the administrators. So basicly the AD group membership should decide which Remote Apps you have access to. How can we accomplish this with TS 2008, TS Web Access and TS Gateway?
