Desktop (read-only)
by Guest Chris- 1 reply

Community, I have a terminal server, each uses the Default User to create their standard profile locally. Once the user is created, I move custom icons to their desktop as they are needed. A TS shared profile will not work in this scenario, since desktop's may be different. I want to make the Desktop read-only, so they cannot use the context-menu to create new documents or save any material to their desktop. Forcing all saving to done to the network share. Termianl Server is a member server, using GP Loopback with replace to keep their settings unique for desktop/TS. I have tried to implement a login script at the GPO level for this group tha…

We have a win 2003 server which is accessed by multiple clients (around 10) by RDP. The machine has 4GB memory. When we start a SAS sort, the performance monitor shows a lot of page faults, but the machine has still 2GB memory available. Why does a process experience page faults when there is plenty of memory free? Martin

I recently reinstalled Windows 2003 with Terminal Services because the old one started to behave badly. Everything went just fine, but I notice one oddity. The users who are using dual monitors also use the /span flag for obvious reasons, but this flag now causes the desktop icons to disappear/reappear with regular windows when Show Desktop button is pressed. To clarify, all icons disappear when this button is pressed or when "show the desktop" option is selected from the right click menu of the task bar. They also appear again when these options are selected again, just like regular windows do. This does not happen when the /span flag is not used. I fin…

RemoteApp dissapears from taskbar
by Guest James- 1 reply

Hi, I have an evaluation copy of Server 2008 installed and have successfully set up RemoteApp using TS Gateway. Users can connect and use the App fine from the internet, however at random intervals when the RemoteApp window is in the background or minimised, it's entry disappears from the taskbar and the associated mstsc.exe processes also disappear. The user receives no error or warning message, the window simply vanishes. They then must reinitiate another RemoteApp connection to their session. I have not been able to find anything on this online except for a suggestion that it may be due to the connection becoming idle and being dropped / lost over th…

Client login on TS triggers msiexec.exe problem
by Guest Kjell- 6 replies
Hi I'm having this wierd problem with my TS Win2003 Std Ed Some but not all clients triggers 1, 2 or 3 processes of msiexec.exe when login in with remote desktop (mstsc.exe). This might be a completely normally behaivour, but the pattern I have makes it a problem, and I've never seen this before. 1. The msiexec.exe locks up 50-70% of the resources, making it into a severe lagging situation for all. 2. It never stops, the same host machine (client) will trigger the same set of msiexec.exe running for identical period of time every *** time it's login in, it doesn't matter if I'm login in using a domain account or a local account, it's the client mac…

Send Message - Admin Rights
by Guest JohnB- 4 replies

Our users work exclusively through RDP. For some reason a handful of users were given local admin rights, so that they could send each other messages using Task Manager. I found this article: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc786099.aspx Which says "You must have Message permission in order to send messages". And I looked at what rights Remote Desktop Users has, and it includes the Send Message right. But... our users that don't have local admin rights still can't send a message using this method. Can anyone else use this Send Message option, without having local admin rights? TIA

Massive Problems with Terminal Services
by Guest Alex O'Hara- 2 replies

I've been trying to get my computer back up and running several times now. I'm running a Dell XPS2010 and I've had many, many problems. I've recently reverted back to XP after many many months of crappy drivers for Vista causing all kinds of headaches. I try to install the new Windows search program only to have it tell me I need to enable terminal services. I go to services....and it's not there. Nor, as far as I can tell, is it anywhere on my computer. I reinstalled from a regular Media Center edition disk (with valid key) and many things are missing, including Media Center. However, I'd really like to figure out to install terminal services since …

RDP from LAN but not from external addresses
by Guest Roger Vicker- 8 replies

We had set up a W2K8 server (the only server in the organization) with User CALs and everything was working fine inside and outside. Just as we were rolling it out to the remote and roaming users it stopped working. Users on the local, to the server, network can still fully use RDP. Outside users get to the server's full screen logon but no matter what user/password they use they get a "The user name or password is invalid." error. Same user/password works via the local network. The event log was showing a 1004 id but a hot fix stopped that as MS indicated it was a false event that led to useless investigation. This started right in the middle of …

Terminal Server Performance
by Guest OS360_ITMAN- 1 reply

Good Day to all I have a terminal server running 180 connections currently, of these 150 are low end connections only using a web application and with them on the system is humming at a mere 10% CPU usage, but once I load my other 30 power users with Email, and office then the usage rises to 70% CPU Usage. Most of the CPU usage is used by Outlook as they have PST which are 2GB's and more. The worst response on the power user session is with Email very slow at times. I am considering installing Exchange as currently we use POP mailboxes from our ISP. Will this alleviate some CPU resources or will it be the same. In essence is Exchange mail bette…

Migrating 2003 Terminal Server to new domain
by Guest hulbertmike- 1 reply

Hello, I am attempting to migrate a Windows 2003 Terminal Server (also the licensing server) from one domain to another. I am using a Quest tool that will migrate the TS server from current domain to new domain. The Quest tool will maintain profiles during this trasition. Because the server functions as a terminal server and licensing server, I am not sure if it will migrate properly and "just work". I am not certain if term server lic server requires same fully qulaified domain name of server, etc? I have already copied the appropriate GPO to lock down the TS server in the new domain, so this should not be a concern. Any ideas or has someone actu…

Cannot Remote Desktop to home PC after installing XP SP3
by Guest Evan Kaye- 6 replies

I know Remote Desktop isn't strictly speaking "Terminal Services", but it seemed to be the closest match. After installing Windows XP Service Pack 3 on my home system, I cannot connect to it by Remote Desktop. The client seems to be trying to connect for a moment, and then automatically cancels less than a second later, with no error message (whereas I DO get an error if I try to connect to the wrong machine or port). I have tried connecting from outside my home network, from another PC on my network over the router's WAN interface, from the other PC directly to the local network address, and from the PC in question itself to the WAN interface (it won't l…

TS Gateway - RDP keeps losing connection and reconnects
by Guest Dag Staale Jenssen- 8 replies

Hi We have a W2K8 configured as terminal server with a TS Gateway and TS Licensing server inn an SBS 2003 R2 domain. We can connect thru Remote Web Workplace (RWW) to the W2K8 TS. The connection works fine, and we are not experiencing any connections problems what so ever. We can also connect thru TS Gateway on the TS server, allowing us connection on port 443. When we connect thru the terminal server gateway, we can log on to the W2K8 TS. At random and persistently the RDP client will lose connection to the TS. The RDP client will reconnect time after time and so often that it is impossible to work. At times it will continuously connect, lose connecti…

Tabbed Browsing in Terminal Server 2008
by Guest JEC- 1 reply

I have recently just deployed my first 2008 terminal server. (Windows Server 2008 STD.) I noticed today that, when logged in as a user, I do not have tabs in Internet Explorer. I also noticed that the "New Tab" functions in the pull down menus is greyed out. I checkd the settings for tabbed browsing and it is enabled. I have also noticed that the administrator does not have this problem. Any ideas?

No option to choose domain or "this computer" (no "log on to" field)when RDP (Remote Desktop) via Cisco VPN

No option to choose domain or "this computer" (no "log on to" field)when RDP (Remote Desktop) via Cisco VPN Hi, I have a setup in which users sometimes VPN to a network, and then RDP to a server. Several users log in ok to the terminal server, but for two users Remote Desktop does not show the field with the domain selection (Log on to), so they cannot be authenticated (VPN works ok - they connect without any issues). And of course when they log in from local LAN (not via VPN), everything is ok. Using domain\username or usern...@domain.com does not help. Adding various DNS suffixes to VPN connection properties does not help. This is a Cisco VPN, and RDP…

RDP not working after Sept. patching
by Guest SG_Dan- 4 replies

I have a series of windows 2003 SP2 servers in a small domain, 3 are real hardware, and 3 on MS virtual server. During and after applying the latest patches to all of these servers, I'm noticing that in all cases I can no longer access my hardware based servers using RDP, or even Remote desktops. The error I receive on RDP is simply that "This computer can't connect to the remote computer." My primary workstation is Vista, but I get the same error running from a fully patched XP workstation as well, both are joined to the same domain. Has anyone else seen this behavior and hopefully found a resolution?
