Client Connection Manager still available?
by Guest John Walker- 1 reply

On my old XP machine, in the Start/Programs list there was an item called "Terminal Services Client" and below that was "Client Connection Manager" which was basically a folder with a bunch of shortcuts for all of my terminal services connections. I loved that because it made all the connections easy to find and open, but with my new XP machine I don't see the "Terminal Services Client" anymore... I have to connect going directly to the "Remote Desktop Connection", which I don't think is as convenient to use. How can I get the Client Connection Manager on to my new machine? It's XP Professional, Version 2002 SP2. Thanks! John

Terminal Server tokens
by Guest shartz- 5 replies

I have never used the SPLA licensing agreement and I was told that I have to get Terminal Server tokens rather than purchasing Terminal Server CALs because the SPLA licensing will be charging me a monthly usage for the Terminal Server connections. Has anyone ever heard of this (the tokens)? Does anyone have any contact information that I can follow up on? Also, I was wondering if I could install my applications before I activate the server as a license server. Right now, I have the server as part of a workgroup and was planning on activating the server once I get the server to our datacenter (out of our environment). Should I wait until the server is …

Any disadvantage(s) to Thin-clients?
by Guest compsosinc@gmail.com- 1 reply
We are considering purchasing thin-clients for connecting to our Windows 2003 Terminal Server (TS) instead of purchasing actual workstations. The clients need to run an application that is on the TS and have internet access. Some will run MS Office that is on the TS. There will be a VPN that TS runs through. There will be a networked (Ethernet-based) printer the thin-clients need to print to. We have never seen or used thin-clients before and are unfamiliar with brand names. Can anyone point out any disadvantages to this setup or recommend brand/models. Thanks

Terminal Server Role
by Guest IshmaelDS- 4 replies

I'm not sure exactly what happened but my boss and a consultant were doing some work on our phone server and terminal server role got added tot he w2k3 server somehow. Now I'm 90% sure that I don't need to worry about removing the role but they were doing some installation work so I'm wondering now if I will have to re-install that app when I remove the role or if you only have to do that with apps that you installed in "Install Mode" Any idea?

How to restrict device/driver sharing on TS
by Guest Raghav- 1 reply
Hi all, I am new to "Terminal Services" (TS). I observed one behavior of TS that if we connect a device to the Server, it is available for all users on that server. For ex. if we connect a USB drive, drive will be visible for all users. Is there any way to restrict this? i.e. the device should be visible/accessible only for those users who have installed the driver. What I mean is, instead of a generic USB drive, we have some vendor specific device connected to the server. I have my driver which woks fine on XP, exports this device as mass storage to the OS. Now the problem is, this drive should be available only for authorized users. But I see this drive …

help. $20k budget to build a redundant system
by Guest Aaron- 1 reply

I have a client running a single Windows 2003 terminal server. This client; A) Has lots of money. B) Will have a heart attack if his terminal server is down for more than one minute. C) Is willing to spend $20,000 to make it redundant somehow. I'd rather NOT use Citrix if possible. I really only want to publish desktops, not single applications. I'd like to integrate VMware into the scenario somehow. Let's hear the ideas and thoughts. I'm a skilled consultant. There isn't much that I can't do, I just want the thoughts of other people on this one, as the budget is so high. I could easily ask for 35 or 40k if it laid out infrastructure…

W2K Terminal Server Joined Domain, no longer Licensing Server
by Guest DennisFP- 2 replies

We have a long-working W2K Terminal Server with 9 activated licenses. Unfortunately I cannot locate the original purchase paperwork from around 2003. Now a dept is needing 3 more connections. Within the last few days this W2K Terminal Server was joined to our 2003 domain, and is no longer a Licensing Server. I suppose that means it is operating in temp mode, and the TS licenses will expire in 90 days. Not sure if the 9 licenses are per device or per user, suspect per user. Couple questions: if I install TS Licensing on our 2003 domain controller, will I be unable to re-active the 9 TS 2000 licenses without the original paperwork? If on the other…

couldn't think of a good short subject line. Here is what I need to do: currently have one location where a home grown processing application is used. The app is a ms access (DAO) application that links via ODBC to a sql 2000 server, which houses the actual data tables. The access front end is very network intensive, not effecient at all. Now, we are possibly going to open 2 new locations in other states. These 2 new locations need to use this processing software. I am thinking the best thing to do is setup a terminal services server in the central office, where the database server is, and having the new sites use terminal services to use the processing s…

Dear All, I have Windows 2003 Ent terminal server, there are about 100 terminal sessions on this terminal, all my client computers have the option enabled to map that local pritner into a terminal server so they can print to they local printers. Recetly I have noticed that my Printer Spooler service on my terminal server is eating my CPU cycles up to 60% of processor time, some times even heier. My CPU is an AMD Opteron 2.51Ghz, which should be more than enouth to hendle my sessions. There is only one application that run on my terminal and that taking a very small amount of CPU cycles almost nothing compared to printer spooler. Are there any best…

This was a good one. The Terminal Server OU was put in a LOCKED DOWN state, before we came on site. Users could barely do anything from the Start Menu. Which for most cases is a good thing. Unfortunately, one of things they couldn't do was set their DEFAULT PRINTER. When they tried to right-click on a printer to set it to default, the context menu would NOT appear. Ouch. So after hunting the Internet for every possible fix for why Terminal Server Clients couldn't set their DEFAULT PRINTER, the answer actually lay in something deeper (and simpler) than that. They actually couldn't RIGHT CLICK on anything. So after browsing thru the LOCKDOWN policy for …

Is there a cal that will enable this connection? Maybe client-side? It worked for a while, I'm guessing with a temp license on the ts, but now it gives error about no licenses available even when no one is connected. The server has 5 ts licenses. Also having the same problem from a Vista Home system. Thanks -- Louis Goodbrod Smyth County Schools

Folks I'm pretty sue it can be done but I can't figure it out... I need to enable remote admin on a remote server which is not in my current domain. IE7 ActiveX control download problems
by Guest Tiran Irani- 6 replies
I have IE7 installed on Server 2003 R2 with SP2. Users are unable to install ActiveX controls such as flash player. The notification bar pops up stating that the download is available, when clicked the install dialog appears. Then the notification bar re-appears with the message "Internet explorer has blocked this site from using an activex control in an unsafe manner" and the control does not install (trying to install Flash player initially!). How can I allow this to work? Is there a way to do this as administrator and make available to users to stop users downloading any old ActiveX control? Thanks in advance

where is the Terminal Services Configuration Tool?
by Guest tgblizz- 3 replies
OK...I give up. I've read on Google, Microsoft, Technet, etc. about the Terminal Services Configuration tool (tscc.msc). Sometimes this is discussed as "Terminal Services Configuration Tool", sometimes as "Terminal Services Configuration Snap-In", and I think 3 or 4 other similar names. This is not installed on our XP systems - but nowhere on any of these sites does anyone explain where or how to get tscc.msc. Microsoft I ask you - why have 500 articles discussing this tool and not one of these pages has a link to actually get the tool? Or at least tell us which CD to load to pull the tool from? So we are asking someone, anyone, to please expla…

I have a 2003 Terminal Server that I would just like to update the hardware on. I figured I would follow the MS instructions for restoring a 2003 server on new hardware would be the easiest thing for my particular setup for a variety of reasons. Would I still have to contact the clearing house and deactivate and re-issue licenses.

Hi All, Anyone know how to stop it timing out after 10 minutes? I have made all the necessary changes to Vista ultimate (64bit) and if I connect using the terminal services on a winodws mobile 5 deviceor a pc there are no time out issues at all. With the WM6 version, it breaks the connection after exactly 10 minutes. I have keepalive set on the pc as well as the group policy and as said other clients do not time out (Vista, XP all with the same user), only the WM6 version (on both my handhelds). Note the screen saver is also disabled and as said, same user, same programs open works fine from other clients, just not from the new Crossbow client. the er…

New TS Installation: 2 Problems
by Guest mmspgh- 1 reply
I have tested Server2003 and TS and the only problem I had with that was with Act2000 and Word 2000 NOT playing nice together without admin rights to the user. Figuring that was a relatively minor issue and fixable, I ordered a new server for our TS installation. I have the new server with 2003R2 and TS installed (no other roles on the server). I followed MS's article on how to install TS and the applications. Now, on the server, Act2000 and Word2000 run together nicely (loged in as admin) without problems. This is a member server behind a SBS2003 box but so was the test setup. When I log into TS remotely, they again don't play nice together, even …
