Returning username rather than computername in 2008 server
by Guest robin4767- 2 replies
I want to use an application under Windows 2008 Server (64-bit) that uses the computer name as a unique identifier. To have this unique identifier under TS I need to return the username rather than the computername. This is explained under KB190159, but it seems that this is not working for the 64-bit OS. Does this KB article also apply to the 64-bit OS or is there another way to get this to work?

Exporting/Saving GPO for TS moving to new domain
by Guest melickas@yahoo.com- 4 replies

We have a Windows 2003 R2 Server that is a Terminal Server in a SBS2000 domain. We are replacing the SBS2000 Server with a SBS2003 Server. In the SBS2000 domain/AD, we created an OU for the TS and created a GPO to lock it down for the TS Clients. We are going to move this TS into the SBS2003 domain (which has a different server & domain name from SBS2000) but we want to keep the GP we created for the TS. How can we do that? Thanks

only one Default printer
by Guest TR- 2 replies

Hi all, I am running a TS2003 w/SP2. I have many remote users who log in from home that have multiple printers connected to their home machines. I would like to only have their default printer map to the session. Is this possible? I have noticed that multiples printers per user per session get mapped and then do not get deleted on exit. This is slowing down the logoff process considerably. Thanks TR

Overriding the home directory
by Guest Judg- 3 replies

I hope someone can help me on this one. I our Environment the homefolder is set within the userobject in AD. Now as we are an International organisation, people from all over are connecting to our datacenter using Citrix and Terminal Services. We saw that the mapping of the homefolder is decreasing the performance of the servers. To stop te mapping of the Homedrive which is set in the user profile, we created a local policy on the server to set the Terminal services home drive, as it overrules the home directory setting in the user object. I have tested this on one server and it is working as expected, now i was trying it on another server and there it…

Every time I try to access an access database file through terminal server with a regular user I get the following message: "Windows can not access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." If I logon with account administrator I can access the database. If I place the user in the administrator group I can access the database but i do not want to do that. Any help would be appreciated.

User Rights in TS
by Guest powlaz- 7 replies

We have an application or two that we run where the manufacturers recommends that any user be logged in as an administrator on the local PC. Being the good little lambs that we are we have always followed this rule. Anyway now that we are set up with a Terminal Server I am seeing, more than ever, why the need for each user to have local admin rights is such a concern. It looks to me like every user of the TS needs to be added to the local Remote Desktop Users group on the TS. In addition it seems I will need to make these users members of the Administrators group which unfortunately provides Admin rights to the Domain as well as the local PC. We do…

Migrating from Per-Device to Per-User Licenses
by Guest Marla- 2 replies

We have an existing Terminal Server/TLS using Per-Device licenses. Some of these licenses are expiring soon. We have purchased new Terminal Server Per-User licenses and a second Terminal Server/TLS. We would like to install half of the licenses on each Terminal Server/TSL for disaster response purposes. Each Terminal Server/TLS is located in a DMZ, but we have opened communication between the two servers just to each other. I am proposing to apply half of the new Per-User licenses to the second Terminal Server. As my 15 Per-Device licenses expire, will those users be able to access the Per-User licenses on the other licensing server, even if th…

Adding new Users - Terminal Server cannot create registry key
by Guest Kenneth Clebak- 1 reply

We are experiencing an issue in our Microsoft 2003 envirornment in when new users are created, we now need to run getsid, grant the user domain admin rights (Temporarily) log in to both of our terminal servers, and manually create the Windows Key within HKEY_USERS\<USER sid>\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion. Any ideas of why this is happening and what registry permissions, if that is what it is related to, might need to be adjusted? -- Kenneth Clebak

We are in the process of upgrading out Domain Controllers from 2003 to 2008 server. Besides AD and DNS the only other function of our DCs it to act as the License Server. I attempted to add the TS Licensing role and get the following error: Terminal Services TS Licensing Availability This domain Database path C:\Windows\system32\LServer Terminal Services: Installation failed <Error>: Attempt to install TS Licensing failed with error code 0x80070057. Duplicate Printers with Different Session Numbers
by Guest Joelness- 3 replies
We have a terminal server used by our external employees for their accounting information and email. It is used by roughly 50 different users. We have it set so TS redirects their local printers to the server. In the last week or two we have noticed that just about every user has at least three copies of their local printers, all listed under different session numbers. I need to figure out a permanent solution to get rid of the excess printers so our users don't get confused as to which printer is the real one.

Licensing Question- moving TS to SBS2003 domain
by Guest melickas@yahoo.com- 1 reply
We posted this to the SBS group without response yet, so thought we would try it here: We currently have an SBS2000 server with a member 2003 Terminal Server. This TS is also the License Server. We need to move this TS to a SBS2003 domain. Does the TS licensing have to be moved to the SBS2003 Server or can the TS remain the License Server? If we do have to move the licensing, can anyone direct us to article to explain how to do this? Thank you.

Hi all, I just setup the windows 2008 gateway server with certificate installed. I configured the rdp client to use gateway server to connect to the windows 2003 terminal server. How am I sure that I use the gateway server to make a connection to windows 2003 terminal server? Is there a way to find out? Thank you.

Issues with Mandatory Roaming profiles
by Guest Altria- 3 replies

Hello All, I am trying to configure mandatory profiles for users in a WIN2k TS environment. The terminal server is configured with local GP, and user sessions are stored under Doc and Settings. After creating the share location, which is also local on the TS server, users who log in have profiles creted in both locations; ie. Doc&Set>tsuser1 and \\compname\profiles\tsuser1 In addition, the user account is not deleted after logoff. Can someone help me identify what I might be doing wrong and a way to rectify the situation. Also, is there a way that I can ssign profile path for groups rather than modifying every account in AD…

Losing connection to license server
by Guest Talbotl- 1 reply

Hello All, I'm having an issue with licensing in terminal services. My terminal server will not stay connected to the license server. When I open the licensing tool it says there is no available license server in the domain or workgroup. So I choose the option to connect, specify the server and it sees everything fine. I can see how many licenses are available. I close the licensing tool and open it back up and again there is no license server. Any ideas why it won't stay connected? Thanks

Can TS Gateway run on the same Server as TS itself ?
by Guest zaz- 4 replies
We have a small network with under 30 users and only 10 external staff want to implement a TS with TS Gateway for external SSL connections and to save us having to open up port 3389 to the internet in general. It seems overkill to use 2 servers to do this so ... is it possible to run TS Gateway on the same server as the actual Terminal Server itself? We are thinking of this to save the need for a 2nd TS gateway server when just one well specified server will do the job. I understand that we would have to open the TS up to the internet on port 443, but for a small user this seems acceptable assuming we configure/patch/harden the server properly. Thank in a…

Is there a way to detect published appplications?
by Guest John- 7 replies
Hi all, I am evaluating windows 2008 TS now. with Widows 2008 TS, clients need to install applications through the packaged share (such as rdp or msi) or through software group policy. Then the remote programs folder is shown in the program folder. Is there a way which allow clients to get published applications by just configuring the TS server settings or farm settings and then published applications will show in the remote programs folder (just as Citrix farm does, the published aplications shows in the program folder after you configure the farm settings and users do not need to install packages etc.) Is this pssible?

ASP.NET logged in TS?
by Guest Bennett- 3 replies
I just checking a client's TS sessions, and saw the ASP.NET account had logged in over the weekend and had been disconnected for 17 hours. I know ASP.NET is a worker process, but why would it be logged in to TS? Would the ASP.NET account be hosting a TS session for an app (which doesn't make sense to me), or should I be concerned that someone set ASP.NET random password to something known and is using it as a TS backdoor? Has anyone ever seen ASP.NET logged into TS?

New to Terminal Services - Where to Begin
by Guest powlaz- 4 replies

I could use a lot of direction with setting up a Windows 2003 Terminal Server. Can anyone point me to an online guide or recommended reading? We are a small company. We have a Windows 2003 domain but we don't use group policy. A lot of the blogs that I've found go into detail about setting up Group Policy after running the Terminal Services setup wizard. Do I need to have this? Is a second NIC required? I thought I read somewhere that one NIC should be connected to the network and the other should be directly connected to the Internet. We don't use roaming profiles. I don't really have a central location to put them. Will this hurt us? I hav…

TS connect to a License Server from DMZ
by Guest Dag- 4 replies

Hi, what needs to be done for the following scenario: A web server in DMZ needs to be setup to use a Terminal Licensing server so more than 3 people can connect at once. It is not apart of the domain and it is a firewall between the web server and the licensing server. I've tried to open up for port 135 and port 5000-5100 in the firewall. I've set up the rpc dynamic ports to be static on both machines( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/154596 ). And rebooted both of them. But it still can't find the licensing server. What have I missed? Server 2008 TS Web Access Remote systems cannot connect from the Internet
by Guest Jon Osborn- 7 replies

Please forgive I am new to TS Web access on 2008. We have installed a test server and installed TS and IIS on it. We are looking to publish programs to TS Web Access, have a hole poked in the fire wall to allow Internet users to access our "site" and use their programs from home. I have TS Web access working great on the internal network but when the same laptop is at home and we connect to our TS Web Access server from outside the network we get an error that states "The Remote Computer could not be found". What could have done wrong? Do we need to open more ports for RDC? I was under the impression we just need port 80 & 443 open. Thanks…
