Hi there, When specifying an rdp connection to start a program on connection, does the users profile still get loaded in the background? If not is there a way we can get rdp to start a program but not load profiles? Thanks.

Occassionally Remote Desktop won't allow incoming connections...
by Guest Taed Wynnell- 1 reply

On one of our frequently-used Windows Server 2003 SP 2 servers, on a few occasions, we've seen that Remote Desktop won't allow incoming connections from any client machine until we reboot it. We'd like to figure out why. When this happens, we can log into it directly on the head, just not remotely with Remote Desktop Connection. When I try to connect to it currently using Remote Desktop Connection, I get: Remote Desktop Disconnected The connection was terminated because of a network error. Please try connecting to the remote computer again. or Remote Desktop Disconnected This computer can't connect to the remote computer. I get a differe…

Remote Desktop into locked workstations on the logged in session
by Guest StandardGreen- 6 replies
My organization is on the cusp of implementing a policy that requires all employees to lock their workstations when they're not at their desks. That's all fine and dandy, except we in IT have grown accustomed to receiving a help desk request and simply walking to the user's station while they're away, sitting down, and doing whatever task needs to be done. The other common scenario would be this: One of us is walking by a cubicle, notices J. Random User isn't at his desk which reminds us that he needed [n] done to his machine. Great! I'll just sit down and do it while he's away. But when all users start locking their stations, this option is no longer viable. Unl…

TS2003 disconnect every 7-9 minutes
by Guest Dana- 4 replies

Bear with me as I'm not a tech gal (I'm an accountant with some tech experience)... We have a TS2003 server that we use relatively infrequently. There are about 6 users who use it to access our Netware server. Rarely at the same time. 3 of the users it seems work fine. The other 3 seem to get messages while they're working that they're disconnected. This disconnect seems to come up every 7-9 minutes. They reconnect and they're right back where they were but for only another 7-9 minutes. We use a WatchGuard MuVPN. Any ideas? Is this a VPN issue or a WTS issue or both? Thx, D

Preventing user from concurrent logons (Win2K)
by Guest Brian- 1 reply
Two questions: 1. Is it possible to prevent users from having more than one concurrent logon on Windows 2000 TS? I know I have this working in Windows 2003 TS, but I do not know if it is possible with Win2K or, if so, where to set it. 2. Is it possible (Windows 2003 or Win2K) to allow administrators (or a specific list of users) to have multiple concurrent connections, but not other users?

MSTSC becomes resource hog
by Guest Rich Raffenetti- 1 reply

I have a Windows XP (SP2) Tablet Edition on a Fuijitsu T4010 in my office on which I keep RDP sessions open to 4-5 servers. I use RDP 6. Recently I have traced some excessive resource usage to the mstsc.exe program using task manager. One time one of the instances of mstsc.exe was using 600 MB of the PC's memory. I have observed this behavior at other prior times as well. I applied 907572. After the 907572 patch one instance had accumulated a million page faults in about a day elapsed time! I have not seen this before and believe it may be related to the patch. A cure is to terminate the problem session with task manager and then reconnect to…

lots of created printers
by Guest Pearl- 1 reply

We have Dell PowerEdge Server acting solely as a Terminal Server with License Server installed. There are 60 User CALs on the license server and on any given moment there is probably 30-40 users on the server. Over time, I've noticed that in Printer Mgr we have over30 sessions in the Ready state for a several dozen printers. I notice that the same printer is associated with many of the sessions. Is this normal? I thought that as users logoff their session and the printers would go away.

Management of disconnected sessions
by Guest Toine- 9 replies

Hello, I have a problem with the management of disconnected sessions on my Server 2003 SP2. When a TSE session is opened from a network station and I close it with the cross or with Start/Disconnect session, the session is still available on the server and I can get connected back to it. On the other hand, if a network failure or a station reboot occurs, the session is killed after about 1 minute. How to keep theses disconnected sessions available for reconnection? In the Terminal Services Configuration, the protocol is configured as follows: - End of a disconnected session: Never - Active session limit: Never - Inactive session limit: 1 day -…

TS in DMZ will not allow clients to connect - licensing issue
by Guest Andrew Story- 11 replies

Hello NG, - Win2k TS with a mix and XP pro and 2k pro clients. 90 days ago (i know) we installed a TS server in a DMZ to allow access via TS Web Access to an application on the trusted network. All works fine until now, external clients cannot connect and get a message box with this text: The remote computer disconnected the session because of an error in the licensing protocol. Please try connecting to the remote computer again or contact your server administrator. Internal clients are fine, also there are many event ID: 1004 regarding the devices unable to connect. Is there a way to test whether your TS server can actually see a license server? …

16 bit Legacy App & NTVDM.EXE
by Guest Jim Ransford- 2 replies
I have a 16 bit app (FormFlow 2.22) that I want users to use with Terminal Services. When one is connected through Remote Desktop and the app is run, an error occurs. "NTVDM encountered a hard error." A search of Microsoft for that error turns up Article #937932, 5/30/07 that indicates a fix is needed for Wow32.dll. I will attempt to get this when MS support opens on Monday. However, I can run the app successfully on the Windows 2003 Small Business R2 server. But I get this error, as noted above, when I run the app through Remote Desktop. My question is: What would cause the difference? If an app runs successfully on the server itself, shouldn't…

Remove SBS2003 so Terminal Services available
by Guest OregonJohn- 2 replies

Can I remove SBS2003 from Server 2003 so I can make Terminal Services in Application mode work? I don't use any of the special services in SBS2003, except maybe to help add users. Since Terminal Services can't be used with SBS2003 I want to dump it. However, I have special applications on the server and of course it is a file server. I want to keep those. Can I remove the SBS2003 part cleanly and get Terminal Services to work?

Licensing problem...
by Guest Mike- 7 replies

I have a win2k terminal server that XP Pro clients connect to. My DC is a Windows 2003 SBS & I had purchased 5 TS licenses. I had read somewhere that XP Pro clients connecting to a Win2k TS had built in licenses, so I really didn't need to buy the licenses. All that aside, my current problem is that every 3 or 4 months, some of the clients start getting the message that the connection couldn't be made because of an error in the licensing protocol, or something like that. I have always been able to talk the user through deleting the LICENSE000 key, which is a labor in itself, but I would like this fixed once and for all. Where do I start?!?!? -- The …

Client disconnect problems.
by Guest Conrad Gotzmann- 7 replies

I am using Remote Desktop client on a vista PC. I can only stay connected to any TS Servers for about 10sec > 5 minutes at best before the client stops responding and a disconnect message. I then connect again an contine once again. I have tried to connect to 3 different TS Servers with the same response. If I use my XP PC using the same network connection everything works properly with no disconnects. Is there a known problem with the vista TS Client?

I would appreciate any assistance you can offer. To the quick here is my issue: I am getting a System.AccessViolationException when attempting to read the channel on the server side. I am using: //All C# 2005 //I believe i have to call VirtualChannelOpen() again eventhough I have a pointer //eitherway I get the same exception IntPtr intHandle = RDPManager.WTSVirtualChannelOpen(IntPtr.Zero, -1, "Impact"); RDPManager.WTSVirtualChannelRead(intHandle, intTimeOut, bytes, bytes.Length, ref written); //The API Call looks like [DllImport("Wtsapi32.dll", SetLastError = true)] public static extern bool WTSVirt…

Loging on to virtual 2003 Terminal Server
by Guest lasangne- 5 replies

Hello, I have 4 blade servers, one is installed as a domain controller, the other 3 servers are Windows 2003 Enterprise versions SP2, they each run VMWARE Server with 2 virtual Windows 2003 Enterprise SP2 Servers. The virtual servers are all members of the domain, and are all configured as Terminal Servers with per user licensing. The License Server is installed on the Domain Controller with 20 userCals. My problem now is that if I make a new user in AD, make him a member of the Remote Desktop Users, if that user tries to login on one of the virtual Terminal Servers we recieve a couple of messages: if a administrator is in a remote session the user gets…

Citrix client fails to receive TS client license
by Guest Ryan- 1 reply

One of my users laptops crashed. The old laptop was about 2 or 3 years old running Windows XP Pro. A new laptop was purchased last month with Windows XP Pro. This user works remotely and uses Citrix Program Neighboorhood version 7 to connect to the external IP of the Citrix server. When he tries to connect the attempt is made and disappears immediately. There is an event log on the Windows 2000 Server stating "The terminal server cannot issue a client license" (source: TermService ID: 1004). All the 5 pcs in the office connect ok, along with Windows Vista Business Edition pcs outside the network, and versions of Windows XP Pro outside the network tha…

disable / modify send message function
by Guest Bill Wilson- 2 replies

We have been running a terminal server for about 4 years now, and it has been the best decision we ever made. Rock Solid and Faster than I could have ever hoped. now, to the point. How can I restrict the users ability to change the username when they use the "send message" feature? The feature I am referring to is msg.exe I believe, but just through the GUI, I'm not too worried about them using the command line version. Right now, they just figured out that they can right click on a user through the task manager and send a message, which isn't the real problem, the real problem is when they change the user it is coming from and send a message they th…

Access to Terminal Services server via internet RDP
by Guest Steve Booth- 5 replies

My question is very similiar to a question raised on 4/24/2006 by Barry which seemed to have no conclusion! However I am fortunate in having more information. I am trying to connect to a Windows 2003 terminal server inside our network. I am forwarding 3389 through our router and a Windows 2003 Domain Controller to the terminal server on address 10.0.0.254. Using telnet from the internet i can see the connection is being refused. I can connect to this terminal server from inside the network. The interesting additional fact is that i can successfully connect to a Windows 2000 terminal server running on address 10.0.0.253 from the internet. Any help …

Hi: I am using remote app features of Windows server 2008 (rc0). I need to logoff the client immediately when the user close his/her remote app. But in TS connection configurations, the minimum time I can set is 1 min. It is still too long for me. From TS manageer, I find that I can "reset" a user when I know she is disconnected. So how can I do this "reset" through a program? Any APIs for it? BTW: What's the difference between "reset" and "logoff" command? The only difference I notice is that when I use "logoff", the win 2008 will pop up an error! And an error will also shown on client's computer. Another option I find is to let the user press "alt +c…
