Thin Clients vs Win XP / PE
by Guest Marcus Cotey- 8 replies

We have several users using thin clients to connect to Win 2003 Terminal Services. We also have several users using WinXP and MSTSC to connect. We even have a few that use Win PE2.0 and MSTSC to connect to the TermServ farm. The WinXP and the WinPE clients have keyboard delays when connecting. The thin clients do not. What would cause this delay? Before someone suggests this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324446 I have already read it. We cannot enable those advance features on our RAID array (Thanks Dell) and so that is not an option. How would I even test for that anyway? I mean, if that really is the issue I could probably lobby to g…

Hi, Don't seem to find a group for Vista rdp. If wrong forum, please let me know. I have two similar problem. I am sure when one is resolve the other will follow. One with Vista Home premium, one with Vista Business premium. Can't rdp into either of those machines. Received the following error : The client could not connect to the remote computer. Remote connections might not be enabled or the computer might be too busy to accept new connections. It is also possible that network problems are preventing your connection. 1. add port 3389 to Exception in firewall on the machine to be rdp in. 2. on the remote tab on my computer properties setting. a…

How to prevent computer settings from applying to Administrators when using loopback policy?
by Guest J. Jensen- 3 replies

How to prevent computer settings from applying to Administrators when using loopback policy? Hi I'm having some trouble with the admin account on Windows 2003 TS. I don't want it to use an TS roaming profile, but don't know how to avoid it, as it is set in Computer settings and therefore affecting all users. Any ideas what to do? Scenario: 2 terminal servers (none of them are DC's). They are in their own OU "Terminal servers", and there are no other objects in here. There's ~10 GPO's linked to the "Terminal Servers" OU. Two of them are affecting Computer Settings, and the rest are User settings. Computer policy #1: Name = Loopback policy: Only…

Virtual channel reconnect on longhorn (Win2k8)
by Guest amitmane82@gmail.com- 2 replies

Hi All, On Win2003 I have created a virtual channel to send data from client to server by writing an add-in. This add-in works fine for new session as well as reconnected session, on win2003. But when I use same add-in while connecting to longhorn server then for new session virtual channel works perfectly but when I disconnect this session and again reconnect it then "WTSVirtualChannelWrite" on server application fails for reconnected session with error 1. ie. Incorrect function. So can any one tell me the reason for this problem. Is there any specific setting to do on terminal server, so that existing virtual channel works correctly as…

Enable Remote Desktop via group policy
by Guest Joe Murphy- 8 replies

I know that I can enable this throughout our organization using group policy, but what I want to be sure of is that the end-user has control over whether or not to allow the remote desktop session. I want to avoid any IT "big brother" perception. They already think we sit around reading their emails. ;) Thanks, JM

A Good GP for Terminal Servers
by Guest nhance- 2 replies
Hi, Does anyone have a good well rounded Group Policy for Terminal Servers and TS users, i do not mind buying one or a guide. It seems some people get a lot more users onto one box than we seem to and i can only think this is due to a good GP with maybe a automated nightly restart? Best practices and what to disable or turn on and off to assist with speed and maximum. If there are AV's and others that allow more power out of the server feel free to let the info fly... Thank you

Users can't disconnect after printing (and only printing)
by Guest azevon- 2 replies

Greetings All, Windows2003TS Enterprise SP2 with Citrix MetaFrame 3.0 With any of my published applications, when the users tries to print (and after it successfully prints), when they exit the application, they receive a blue screen and their connection to my server still remains active. If they launch the same application and don't print, log off the app, their connection is logged out and disconencted normally. This only happens with PUBLISHED apps - if I establish a connection to the server (with desktop and all apps, etc), and I run and print something, I can disconnect normally. Now I'm not sure if this is a Citrix issue - but I am assuming …

Windows 2000 Terminal migration to 2003.
by Guest Lasse- 1 reply

Hi We have a Windows 2000 Terminal server and I am planning to change it to 2003. My idea was to save all the important data and each users profile and then do a fresh installation of Server 2003. My problem is that I am not sure how to backup the user profiles so I can import them when the 2003 server is running. If I can't save the user profiles all the printers need to be installed again and I would like to avoid that. Any ideas?

Shared Printer Not Showing in TS
by Guest moncho- 1 reply

I am sharing a USB DYMO 330 Turbo Label printer on a W2K Server. I added the shared printer to our W2K3 TS server but it will only show in the "Printers and Faxes" for administrators only. I have no idea why it will not show up for my non-admin users. I have setup a few local TCP/IP printers and had no problem. When I look at the port (under admin account) of the printer on the TS server, instead of showing \\server\sharedprintername it is showing USB001 instead. Could this be a problem? TIA moncho

More than Two Admins
by Guest Lynn- 4 replies

Ah, yes. My very special snowflake systems. :P I have a system that because of the nature of the work, requires multiple admins to be logged into my 2003 Enterprise Server. We have four admins who need remote access. We even have CAL's for these admins. TS is currently set up in remote admin mode, which everyone knows allows 2 concurrent connections. I do not want to run TS in Application mode, there's no need the server to serve applications. Besides, installing TS it would break the proprietary software that lives there. I need to be able to allow remote administration for FOUR admins concurrently (don't ask, it wasn't my idea!) using remote a…

Solution for slow link??
by Guest pete0085- 2 replies
This is more of a general question. We are a small organization with 3 different locations and many users move between locations on a daily basis. The other 2 branches are connected via a T1 link. We use roaming profiles and often the logon time can be 5-10 minutes if not more. Accessing resources over the network can be very slow to the point the program stops responding for a few seconds. I really don't know anything about termincal services. I use remote desktop to connect to the server or another pc sometimes, but don't understand enough of how it works for a user to log on. We need to use roaming profiles since users log on to different pcs a…

Can I use local SCSI, USB, Paralel, Serial ports on client compute
by Guest Daniel Valach- 1 reply

I need to use applications with Fujitsu scanner on local SCSI port, and local USB port with Olympus Digital voice recorder, and USB memory sticks. Other needs would require local printer, either parallel or USB and serial port use for hyperterminal command prompt controlled devices. Is this possible on terminal services client or do I need to do these functions locally? I have Windows Enterprise server 2003 R2 running teminal services applications to clients. If yes, I need either articel or instructions on how to do it. Daniel

Updating status - REMOTE INTERACTIVE LOGON vs. INTERACTIVE
by Guest oldemusicke@gmail.com- 2 replies

XP sp2 assigns you to the special groups REMOTE INTERACTIVE LOGON or INTERACTIVE (etc.) only at logon. Is there any way to get Remote Desktop or a session unlock to update this group assignment? Situation 1: You log in at the console. As expected, you're now part of the special INTERACTIVE group. You lock the session (ctrl-alt-del, Lock Workstation). Later, you connect via Remote Desktop. This gives you the existing session. Even though you're now in a remote session, you're still part of INTERACTIVE, and not part of REMOTE INTERACTIVE LOGON (confirmed by whoami /groups). Situation 2: The console isn't logged in. You start a Remote Desktop session. As expect…

Hi, I have this strange problem on my Terminal Server (2003 x64 SP2). When right click an item selecting send to - Mail recipient it starts the default mail program. Office 2007 is installed on the server and selected as default mail program in IE, so I expect Outlook to start, but it doesn't. Instead the configuring OE wizard starts. This issue irritates my users and me. I have searched the Internet for several hours with no luck. I have seen plenty websites describing simular issues but nothing with a helpful solution. So what do I do????

RDP 6.0.6000 changes user login info
by Guest BobH- 1 reply

I have many, many RDP shortcuts setup. They allow me to connect to various servers, with differing resolutions depending upon what I need to do, and with different usernames. Before installing the newest and greatest, this system worked well. NOW, RDP keeps changing my user names, and will not allow me to enter a username before connecting. Except for a couple of low-security requirement machines, I do not store the passwords in my RDP shortcuts. Can Microsoft please tell me what commandline switches or registry entries are needed to make the new RDP work the same as before: 1. I want to enter a username and possibly a password, and possibly the …

Lock down in a workgroup environment

Hi all, I am setting up Win2003 with terminal server with no AD. How do I restrict the RDP clients from accessing the items on the server that they shouldn't without restricting all users (including Administrator), which is what happens when using the GPO editor? I know that if I install AD I can configure a new OU & link it to a policy but I want to install it without AD as recommended. I have used the limited options in the GPO snap in (Computer configuration, Windows Components, Terminal Services) but I would like to stop them accessing the C drive on the server, task manager etc. I have also excluded access to the control panel from the "Task Bar …
