Terminal Services Bandwidth Upload Speed
by Guest corymk- 1 reply

I have a remote Terminal Services connection that is utilized quite frequently throughout the day. Currently, we are using Starband Satellite Internet with 400k download and 50k upload speeds. We are having a bit of speed issues with the service and the next step up is 512k download with 128k upload. I am curious if you would notice a difference in the terminal service connection or not. Also, how much impact does the upload have on a terminal services connection when you are the one connecting to the terminal server? The cost doesn't change if you switch amongst these two plans, only a $300 hardware cost and installer fees. I am curious if that would be wo…

Why would I want a per device CAL?
by Guest Joe Murphy- 3 replies

Wouldn't per device CALs be more restrictive than per user CALs? Sounds like a per device CAL means that the user would have to create a TS session from the same computer every single time, right? JM

RDP works great, now how to I make sure I am the only one that can connect?
by Guest jimbo505@gmail.com- 4 replies

Okay, I have RDP configured and running great. Problem is that I am getting people trying to log in remotely other than me. So I have used IPSec before to kick people off my server, but really it's a pain and I know there's a better way. I was using IPSec as it did say that it can manage 'remote access' but it doesn't seem to work no matter what I try. It still allows another computer on my network to login. Anyone know of a way to have only 1 ip address access my remote server through RDP? Running Windows 2003 Server SP2 I know there's a way to do this using VPN, but I don't have any experience and looks confusing.

Check terminal server enabled or not on longhorn (2008)server.

Hi I have installed terminal server on my longhorn (2008) server. I have to check whether it is enabled or not. On 2003 machine I can check this by checking the TSEnabled value. This value is available at the location HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server \TSEnabled. But , on longhorn server TSEnabled value is not there. I don't understand whether I have configured terminal server incorrectly or there is another key value to check terminal serve is enabled or not. Please guide me. Any help will be appriciated. Thanks Amit.

Can't use TS within the domain after upgrading WS2003 to SP2
by Guest Olivier- 1 reply

Hello, I am running Small Business Server 2003 with 5 clients. I was on SP1 until recently, and everything was working properly. Any of my 5 client computers which operate within the domain could TS to the server. I have upgraded to SBS 2003 SP2, and I can't connect anymore. I am getting the message "This computer can't connect to the remote computer. Try connecting again. If the problem continues..." The client computers are all part of the domain. I can see the server, access shares, and all of that. It just seems to be related to TS, and everything was working well until I upgraded to SBS2003 SP2. Help will be greatly appreciated. THanks, Olivier

Managing IE6 in a Terminal Services Environment
by Guest cbrunet- 7 replies

Greetings all, I'm having some issues trying to manage Internet Explorer 6 through Group Policy. I've setup a new GPO and associated it with the OU I want. I've then gone User Configuration -> Administrative Templates - > Windows Components -> Internet Explorer -> Internet Control Panel -> Security Page and enabled the group policy Site to Zone Assignment list. I've added the sites I wish to add to the local Intranet, and exited. Now, when I log onto the desktop of the associated system as administrator, my IE settings come across. I go Tools -> Internet Options, then the security tab, I select the Local Intranet sites and all of my ad…

Licensing
by Guest RMMan- 4 replies

My 2003 TS is installed as both the application and licensing server. It is a stand alone server. I have activated the server as the license server. I have installed the cals in user mode. However, every user who logs on is getting a temporary license. None of the licensed cals are being issued. Why would that be? Will the user automatically pick up the valid license once the temporary license expires? Do I need to do something to make sure service is not interrupted? Thanks.

I've locked down a terminal server via Active Directory Group Policy so that users cannot access the control panel apps. However, they DO need to manage their servers. Is there a way to allow this without allowing control panel access? Gavin

How can i change the name of the autocreated printers???
by Guest r46792- 3 replies

We are using a program that crashes when you print if the printer names are to long. I think its 30 characters. How can we have the redirected printer names created with a shorter name. I read you can remove the session ID but I don't know how. the normal format is "printer name" (from %computer_name%) on session XX I'd like to have it just as "printer name"

by Guest BBJ- 3 replies

I'm having severel Windows 2003 servers that sometimes stop listening on port 3389 - and RDP stop working. We have to restart the servers when this happens, and after that it's possible to connet using RDP again. All servers are running SP2, some as terminal servers and others as "normal" servers with RDP enabled. Any ideas as to how to resolve this issue?

Profile-issue on password change
by Guest Severin Meierhans- 3 replies

Hello, We have a citrix-environment with about 150 Terminalservers running Windows 2k3 SP1. Users have roaming-profile. Problem: A user is starting a published application and gets the windows-message, that he needs to change the password. The User change his password and the application starts. The Problem is that in this situation the server does not load the roaming-profile. He creates a local-profile with the default-settings. I have found this Hotfix http://support.microsoft.com/kb/833409 I've tried to install this hotfix, but it did not work because the fix is already included in the sp1! Any ideas? Thanks

How many CALs required?
by Guest compsosinc@gmail.com- 6 replies

We have the following environment: (1) SBS2000 Server as DC -- NOT SBS2003 (1) Windows 2003 Server Std Edition as a Terminal Server We have: (15) Users accessing the SBS2000 DC using XP Pro machines We are adding: (10) XP Pro newly purchased-clients (many users) accessing the Windows 2003 Terminal Server Question: How many and what type of CALs do we need in TOTAL to support this environment (assume we have none of the following): SBS2000 CALs = ? Windows Server CALs = ? Terminal Server 2003 Device CALs = ? Thanks !

Mouse/keyboard availability in inactive session
by Guest BuddyMcCool- 1 reply

I have a test suite that takes control of the mouse and keyboard to perform UI testing (using Java's Robot class). It runs interactively every few minutes when I'm logged into the machine via Remote Desktop. When I disconnect (but don't log off), the mouse and keyboard cannot be controlled and the tests are not carried out. Is this something that should be possible? Is there a setting somewhere to keep mouse and keyboard support active in my session even when I'm disconnected?

Need your advice on this.
by Guest Jane- 7 replies

Hi all, I am going to move to windows 2003 terminal server. Currently, we are using Citrix servers and at most we have only 6 users connected at the same time even though we have around 400 users. Can I just purchase 25 user CALs and it will supply our needs? I guess that windows 2003 terminal server can pool users concurrently as Citrix servers. Any advice on the license and other known issues. Also, I can just install licensing server on the windows 2003 terminal server. Thank you.

Licensing
by Guest Mark- 3 replies

Morning all, have a question regarding a licensing. We currently have a 2003 terminal server in our domain users are accessing from another domain (managed my another supplier) my question is this, what would the users require if they added a new machine into their domain with regards to both server CAL's and TS CAL's. Would they need 1 TS CAL and 1 Server CAL, or would they need 1 TS CAL and 2 Server CAL's. Also, is the situation was changed slightly and the TS was in the same domain as the users workstations, would then then still need 2 server CAL's (one for the domain controller and one for the TS) plus the one TS CAL or only 1 and 1. thanks

Remote running of VB app using TS
by Guest Markus- 7 replies
I need to test out a VB app running on TS. I would like to see what kind of speed I can get for multiple remote users (up to 5) running the app with TS. Am very new to TS. Right now I have 2 XP Home computers to use for this testing. As I understand it, XP home does not have TS capabiltiy. I believe I need to upgrade one computer to XP Pro to do this testing. Correct? If I do so, I believe this will allow up to 5 remote concurrent users (before I would need additional licenses) running the app on the upgraded XP Pro computer. Correct? I may run this app either over the Internet or on a LAN or WAN. If I run over the internet, can I test this…

Remove Desktop from Open/Save dialogs
by Guest DLecool- 3 replies

Terminal Server 2k3 is running in application mode, i.e. an application is launched upon logon and user has no access to desktop. Server drives are hidden via GPO, however when the user tries to save or open files he can still store files on the Desktop. Can that be removed so the only place a user can save/load files from are his mapped drives i.e. his machine and nowhere else? Thanks!

Could someone explain how i can do this? I have a windows 2003 enterprise license server. In TS configuration/Server settings my only available option is Remote desktop for administration and i need to change to per device to be in sync with our terminal servers. It says to use Add/Remove but am unsure of which componets i am to add/remove. This server presently has over 300 temporary licenses issued and users are now receiving warnings that their client license is about to expire in x amout of days. This would also ideally be done during production hours. Thanks in advance,

Client disconnected problem
by Guest LostGoose- 7 replies

I need help diagnosing problem at a customer's site. They are running Win 2003 Server. They have a couple of Pocket PC devices that run the TS client. Terminal Services is set to auto logon clients and launch an application. This has worked fine for a couple of years. Now one PPC gets the message "Terminal services client disconnected. The connection to the server has timed out". The other PPC still works fine. I can ping the server and open the server in Windows Explorer on the PPC. Hard reset the PPC. No change. No message in the event log of the server. I can take my laptop (running W2K server) and run the TS client and connect fine. I can …
