I have a 2003 domain and 2 2008 terminal servers. Right now, we are using 3 different servers for licensing. I want to set up one of my domain controllers as the license server so servers and clients can detect it. Can I install 2008 TS licenses on a 2003 server? If so, how?

2003 TS Licensing reinstall

Hello, I have a Windows 2003 TS License server in place for my Citrix PS(Xen) 4.5 farm. All my users login to the farm from WYSE 1125's and S10's. I have a good number of licenses that are issued to devices that are no longer around causing me to be currently out of TS CALS. I know they will re-enter the available pool when they expire. The expiration dates are spread out over the next 3 months. I would like to get these licenses back know instead of waiting. The only way I can do this is by resetting up my TS Lic server. My main concern with this is what affect will that have on all my currently valid issued licenses to my WYSE units? Will they s…

My windows key combinations (alt-Tab; Winkey-R; etc) are not working in my remote desktop sessions to Win2003 servers. I have selectedthe option to Apply Windows Key Combinations within the client / Option / Local resources, but the setting never seems to take. The option is remembered between sessions or even reboots, and is saved in the default.rdp file, but it just never works. Any ideas?

by Guest mat- 6 replies

I would like to test windows 2008 in it's terminal services role. In particular I would like to see how it does with sound playback and recording from remote workstations. I've installed it on an older pc and the built in audio chip is not recognized (asus K8N motherboard). If I buy a windows 2008 compatible soundcard, will I be able to proceed with my testing? Can anyone recommend a card? Seems like an obvoius question but I wanted to confirm.

I have set up a Windows 2003 Terminal Server that part of a domain. When I try to login I get the message... "To log on to this remote computer, you must have Terminal Server User Access permissions on this computer. By default, members of the Remote Desktop User group have these permissions. If you are not a member of the Remote Desktop Users group or another group that has these permissions, or if the Remote Desktop User group does not have these permissions, you must be granted these permissions manually." I have verified that my domain login is part of the Remote Desktop User group. I even loosened the security to include "domain users" and the…

No option to choose domain or "this computer" (no "log on to" field)when RDP (Remote Desktop) via Cisco VPN
by Guest Ruok- 3 replies

No option to choose domain or "this computer" (no "log on to" field)when RDP (Remote Desktop) via Cisco VPN Hi, I have a setup in which users sometimes VPN to a network, and then RDP to a server. Several users log in ok to the terminal server, but for two users Remote Desktop does not show the field with the domain selection (Log on to), so they cannot be authenticated (VPN works ok - they connect without any issues). And of course when they log in from local LAN (not via VPN), everything is ok. Using domain\username or usern...@domain.com does not help. Adding various DNS suffixes to VPN connection properties does not help. This is a Cisco VPN, and RDP…

2008 Easy Print problem
by Guest Steve- 2 replies
We have deployed Navision (MS Application) via TS 2008 . All client printers are using the Easy Print driver. Quite often, when users try to print from this published remote application to the redirected printer, they send the job to the printer, but the printer does not produce any output. If I watch their session, it doesn't appear that the job ever reaches the que of the client created printer. To resolve, I have been having them close their application and reopen, and that has mostly worked, but I am looking for resolution. I do not see any errors in the Event viewer related to this. Thank you, steve

Terminal Server Events 1004 & 4105
by Guest Saucer Man- 6 replies

I am getting this Informational event logged on my terminal server (server 2008) whenever someone connects to it from within our domain. 1004 - "The terminal server cannot issue a client license. It was unable to issue the license due to a changed (mismatched) client license, insufficient memory, or an internal error. Further details for this problem may have been reported at the client's computer." We have 5 per user TS Cals installed. A Microsoft rep stated that per user Cals cannot be tracked and that this message is normal. I felt perhaps he was a little unsure about this as my call to them was actually on another issue. Does anyone know if this…

TS Gateway - RDP keeps losing connection and reconnects
by Guest Dag Staale Jenssen- 8 replies

Hi We have a W2K8 configured as terminal server with a TS Gateway and TS Licensing server inn an SBS 2003 R2 domain. We can connect thru Remote Web Workplace (RWW) to the W2K8 TS. The connection works fine, and we are not experiencing any connections problems what so ever. We can also connect thru TS Gateway on the TS server, allowing us connection on port 443. When we connect thru the terminal server gateway, we can log on to the W2K8 TS. At random and persistently the RDP client will lose connection to the TS. The RDP client will reconnect time after time and so often that it is impossible to work. At times it will continuously connect, lose connecti…

Session Broker and TS Gateway
by Guest Dylan- 6 replies

I've followed the step-by-step guide for TS Session broker and TS Gateway but was wondering how to make both work together. With TS Session Broker, all TS servers are published on the DNS with the same farm name in a round robin fashion but TS Gateway manages TS servers with security group. HOw can one publish just the Gateway server to public facing and still achive load balancing using TS Session Broker without publish IP of the TS servers? Thanks.

Migrating 2003 Terminal Server to new domain
by Guest hulbertmike- 1 reply

Hello, I am attempting to migrate a Windows 2003 Terminal Server (also the licensing server) from one domain to another. I am using a Quest tool that will migrate the TS server from current domain to new domain. The Quest tool will maintain profiles during this trasition. Because the server functions as a terminal server and licensing server, I am not sure if it will migrate properly and "just work". I am not certain if term server lic server requires same fully qulaified domain name of server, etc? I have already copied the appropriate GPO to lock down the TS server in the new domain, so this should not be a concern. Any ideas or has someone actu…

Problem with Win 2008 TS Easy Print
by Guest Trygve Lorentzen- 1 reply

Hi, we have serious issue with the new feature "Easy Print" in 2008 server. The problem is that the physical margins of the local/client printers are not carried over to the easy print driver on the TS. This is not a big issue with all software that has a proper page setup dialogue with settings for all 4 margins. The problem arises with software that depends on the physical margins set in the print driver to place the print correctly. Is there any settings for this? Like "Use physical margins from printer driver", somewhere in registry perhaps, or in a settings file. I have spent a few days trying to make this work and I'm running out of ideas... Mayb…

Quad or Dual Core CPUs??
by Guest Hank Arnold (MVP)- 8 replies

I will be ordering two new servers for a new/replacement farm. It will be running Windows 2003, PS 4.5, have50 concurrent licenses (our peak seems to be around 35 concurrent users). We will run Office 2003 (including Outlook), a database client (Misys HomeCare) and Corel WordPerfect Office 2000 (mostly legacy files). I'd appreciate opinions on whether it makes more sense to get 2 Quad core CPUs or Dual core CPUs.... -- Regards, Hank Arnold Microsoft MVP Windows Server - Directory Services

We have several users who connect to our server, using TS, over an internet connection. We have noticed that there have been a lot of users trying to get into our server, using TS. We need to secure it better and would like to know if we can use certificates, on the clients PC to authenticate them? TIA

We want to give a user access to a server via Remote Desktop and only give them access to a single program. This works perfectly fine, howerver when the user (or us as Administrators) close the program, the program closes but their is no way to exist out of the session unless you disconnect. By no way I mean the screen is just blue, looks like explorer.exe didnt start or something. This seems to be common behaviour across many of our servers. Why is this and can we have it so when the program closes we can just go to the remote desktop sessions desktop?
