hello all. I have a windows server 2003 enterprise x64 that is used as a dc and another one, a member server, that is used as a terminal server. the terminal server is in the domain. my client computer is a windows vista ultimate. all updates, hot-fixes and latest service-packs are installed on all the machines. my problem is that i can't rdp to the terminal server when I'm outside the office and using VPN connection. inside the LAN everything works great. i can rdp to the dc and then, from within the dc, rdp to the terminal server. i can't to the rdp directly to the terminal. I'm using the same credentials as from within the network, so i don…

UPHClean and x64
by Guest F. David del Campo Hill- 10 replies

Dear All, I have a Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 Terminal Services server which is experiencing continuous "locked profile" problems (users kept being logged in with temporary profiles because their user profiles could not be updated; you could not delete the profiles in C:\Documents and Settings\ because NTUSER was being used by another process; and all these problems would go away after a reboot until the profiles got locked again), so I installed UPHClean 1.6d from . The installation *apparently* went well, but when I try to start the User Profile Hive Cleanup service, I get the message: "The User Profile Hive Cleanup service on Local Computer start…

Is there a way to detect published appplications?
by Guest John- 7 replies
Hi all, I am evaluating windows 2008 TS now. with Widows 2008 TS, clients need to install applications through the packaged share (such as rdp or msi) or through software group policy. Then the remote programs folder is shown in the program folder. Is there a way which allow clients to get published applications by just configuring the TS server settings or farm settings and then published applications will show in the remote programs folder (just as Citrix farm does, the published aplications shows in the program folder after you configure the farm settings and users do not need to install packages etc.) Is this pssible?

Cannot Remote Desktop to home PC after installing XP SP3
by Guest Evan Kaye- 6 replies
I know Remote Desktop isn't strictly speaking "Terminal Services", but it seemed to be the closest match. After installing Windows XP Service Pack 3 on my home system, I cannot connect to it by Remote Desktop. The client seems to be trying to connect for a moment, and then automatically cancels less than a second later, with no error message (whereas I DO get an error if I try to connect to the wrong machine or port). I have tried connecting from outside my home network, from another PC on my network over the router's WAN interface, from the other PC directly to the local network address, and from the PC in question itself to the WAN interface (it won't l…

Automatic Outlook Profile Generation not working in TS
by Guest eahunter46- 9 replies

Hi Here is the description of the problem: Installed MS office 2003 on Terminal Server using MST designed to allow auto-generation of the outlook profile whenever new user logs on. Default profile was overwritten with new default profile AFTER the above was done, now auto-generation of outlook no longer works and we have to define exchange server and user name every time a new user needs to logon. Here is what has been done to try and rectify: Uninstalled Microsoft office, overwrote default user profile one more time and reinstalled Office using newly regenerated MST- did not work Here is installation command for office: \\ufpasrv02\si\office2003\setup…

printing in TS...yes, that!
by Guest Cary Shultz- 2 replies

Good afternoon! I have a hopefully simple question regarding printing within a TS environment. First off - environment is single Windows Server 2003 R2 (SP2 32-bit) AD Domain and the TS box is a member server of that domain. I have implemented the ntprintsubs.inf (the two entries in the registry are correct) and am seeing an error entry on the TS box in the Event Logs. Question: upon reviewing the ntprintsubs.inf file I have noticed that one printer (on the left side of the file) will have multiple entries (on the right side) as a possible mapping. Is this possible? Here is an example of what I mean: "HP LaserJet 6L" = "HP LaserJet 4" "HP L…

2003 TS Session not going to disconnected
by Guest Dan- 3 replies

We have 3 2003 Enterprise Edition SP2 Terminal Servers. We are having a problem with when a user is working remotely and the internet drops. When the users line drops the session should go to disconnected right. Instead the session is completely logged off the server. I have a policy set for our terminal servers in AD to set keep alives and auto reconnection and we have idle and disconnected session limits of 3 hours but it logs the session off within 2 minutes after the users loses a network connection. 2 of these servers are in a load balancing config with session directory and are experiencing the same issue. It works fine if the user discon…

IE7 ActiveX control download problems
by Guest Tiran Irani- 6 replies
I have IE7 installed on Server 2003 R2 with SP2. Users are unable to install ActiveX controls such as flash player. The notification bar pops up stating that the download is available, when clicked the install dialog appears. Then the notification bar re-appears with the message "Internet explorer has blocked this site from using an activex control in an unsafe manner" and the control does not install (trying to install Flash player initially!). How can I allow this to work? Is there a way to do this as administrator and make available to users to stop users downloading any old ActiveX control? Thanks in advance

User CALs installed as Device CALs?!?!
by Guest Gareth Hughes- 9 replies

Help! I have recently taken over support of a client with the following scenario: 1 x SBS2003 box running PDC, Exchange & SQL 1 x Server 2003 Std box running Terminal Services to 6 users The customer has an open licence for all the software including 6 USER TS CALs On replacing a Thin Client, I am informed that I cannot connect to RDP as there are no licences available. Odd I thought... Looking at TS Licencing, it is set to "Per Device" and has 2 sets of licenses installed: 4 x TS Device CALS, 5 x TS Device CALs, all of which are allocated to a mixture of new and old hardware. My questions are: 1, How can I change the system to Per User and…

Server 2008 TS RemoteApp Maximum Number of Users
by Guest Andy DeAngelis- 2 replies
Good morning. I am currently in the process of developing an infrastructure solution to publish Internet Explorer via RemoteApp to over 600 different locations, averaging around 5 end users per location (for a grand total of 3000 end users). The reason I am doing this is that my client uses a web application that is critical for their day to day business, but only has on average a 128kb frame connection (some connections as low as 56kb dial up!) from the remote locations to the datacenter, with 64kb dedicated to VoIP. This frame connection also is used for email, internet, etc. My thought process is to publish Internet Explorer through TS RemoteApp. …

Single-application mode - Myth or reality?
by Guest dudeDad- 12 replies

I would like to create a GPO that says "TS_User1 will see a desktop icon only for Application X" and "TS_user2" will see a desktop icon for only Application Y" etc. Both users are loggin into the same terminal server. That one server has both applications installed. Is this possible? This MS document refers to "single application mode" (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/186572/ ) but I do not see any other references to it. Thanks Ken I am not talking about Remote App. I want people to access this functionality from RDC 6.0 without having to upgrade to 6.1. Basically I want people to click on a DirectX object on a webpage (using TS We…

Playing RDP packet streams
by Guest yairinbal@yahoo.com- 4 replies

Hello, I am looking for a way to record and play RDP sessions. I wonder of someone knows methods of rendering RDP protocol stream into the screen. For example, in Vista Microsoft provides the RDPViewer COM Object (used by Windows Desktop Sharing API) which renders RDP into the screen, however it requires actual TCP connection to the server and it does not accepts RDP packet streams. I know that there are some products that do so (like RecordTS), but I wonder if a simple functionality can be provided by Microsoft SDKs. Regards, momo

Software on Terminal Server Help!
by Guest Candace Sparks- 2 replies

We have a remote office connecting to the main office through hardware vpn, using RDP. The software is installed on the server. When we connect to the terminal server with logon other than the administrator we are able to open 4 of the 5 modules no problem, but cannot run the other module. When we logon on as administrator, we can run all the modules. Do we have to install software on each one of the profiles of the remote users? There is other software the integrates with the main software, and it does not run as it should when logged on as a user other than the administrator. I am new using Terminal Server, would appreciate any help! Thank you for…

Management of disconnected sessions
by Guest Toine- 9 replies

Hello, I have a problem with the management of disconnected sessions on my Server 2003 SP2. When a TSE session is opened from a network station and I close it with the cross or with Start/Disconnect session, the session is still available on the server and I can get connected back to it. On the other hand, if a network failure or a station reboot occurs, the session is killed after about 1 minute. How to keep theses disconnected sessions available for reconnection? In the Terminal Services Configuration, the protocol is configured as follows: - End of a disconnected session: Never - Active session limit: Never - Inactive session limit: 1 day -…

TS session minor annoyances...that are making me crazy!
by Guest Gregg Hill- 6 replies

Hello! I have some minor appearance issues to which I cannot yet find an answer. I am posting here in the hope that some bored guru will stumble upon this post while I am off on Google looking for the answer. 1) I cannot turn off the "Stop USB Mass Storage Device" item in the system tray when restricted users are logged into a locked down 2000 TS. I have "Hide the notification area" checked under User Config > Admin Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar. I need to kill that so no end user can disable the USB backup drive on the TS. 2) Another thing I have Googled to death is trying to find a GPO setting to enable desktop icon auto arrange for all…

I have Word open on my local PC, I have Word open in my Terminal Server session, and placing them side-by-side you can clearly see the Terminal Server display is far inferior to my local PC instance of Word. I have set all the display settings as high as possible for the Terminal Server session and the quality is still inferior - what else can be done?

Configuring Terminal Services in a test lab just for the practice of installation and configuration. Using Eval copy of 03 from the MSPRESS self-paced training kit. Set up three servers-- one DC, two member servers. Configured both severs as Term Servers. Installed Term Serv Licensing on SRV1. From SRV2- I can terminal into SRV1 without issue. From SRV1- I cannot terminal into SRV2. I receive a lengthy logon message relating to permissions and RDP membership. RDP membership is fine, rights are fine, etc. If I install another Term Serv Licensing server also on SRV2- error goes away. Did it again- one way. TSL was on SRV1, TS on SRV2. Could n…
