general question on terminal services
by Guest UWRFREPORTER04- 1 reply

I have some general questions regarding terminal services. I'm studying for my 70-290 exam through prep logic and they didn't include any info on terminal services. Is there a good article out there that gives a general overview of what it is, how it works, it's limitations, uses, etc. I understand the remote desktop protocol and web services in IIS. I don't know if they are related.

Windows 2003 Server with terminal services\netgear ProSafe vpn firewall fvx538\Intel Pro EB 1000GB has a very slow RDP remote connection. Hello, I recently setup two Windows 2003 Server with terminal services. When I connect with remote desktop from a server or laptop on the switch the connection is fast, but when I connect to the 2 severs with remote desktop outside the firewall I have a very slow connection. The older terminal servers on the switch have a very fast remote desktop connection outside the firewall. When I try to access one of my Windows 2003 servers from my XP Pro box it locks up the remote session and then locks the server. The only way I can get the server back is by hard booting the server. Any ideas why this is happening?

I have two Servers in my network a Domain controller running 2003 server and an older server running windows 2000 server. The 2003 server has the licences on for both 2003 terminal services and 2000 terminal services. If wish to login to the 2000 server whilst on the local network the server responds with out a problem. If I logon remotely (i.e. From Home) I receive the remote computer disconnected the session because of an error in the licencing protocol. I have checked all the licencing server and all appear correct. This is now stopping us from moving forward any ideas? -- Itmen-001

Install programs using Group Policy

I am trying to use GP to install Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint viewers for a number of Terminal Services users. Microsoft Office 2003 is already installed on the Terminal Server but I want to use the viewers because we don't have enough Office licenses. First question is how to deploy the applications? This is what I did ; - Downloaded the MSI installer for Powerpoint 2007. - Created OU and GPO and assigned a package to it in User Configuration. - I didn't use MST. This doesn't seem to work. Second question is how to force the users to use the viewers instead of the full programs i.e Powerpoint viewer instead of Powerpoint when they open a document? …

Office 2007 edition for TS
by Guest Ben Amada- 4 replies
Hi. I've read some conflicting messages about which version of Office 2007 can be installed on Windows Server 2003 with terminal services enabled. From what I can gather, both Enterprise Edition and Professional Plus edition will work because these two versions use Volume License Keys and do not require the typical license activation process that you would typically go thru with the other Office 2007 editions. Does this sound correct? Has anyone run into any troubles with getting Professional Plus edition installed and working on a Windows 2003 terminal server? Thanks in advance, Ben

We have 30 users who need to access our Terminal Server. The Terminal Server also houses the TS License Service. We have 20 User CALs because only 15 users will be accessing the Server at any given time. Is this OK? Or, will we need 30 CALs?

W2KTS problem of '.an error in the licensing protocol' at Srv03 Do
by Guest Rulf Tse- 1 reply

Several days before, some of the existing TS users could not connect to a W2K TS Server with the following message. It is located at a Srv03 Domain while the TS Licensing Server is at 1 of the Srv03 Domain Controller. "The remote computer disconnected the session because of an error in the licensing protocol. Please try connecting to the remote computer again or contact your server administrator." I have done the steps from TechNet and Support sites: 1. Removing the TS client's registry. 2. Removing the TS Licensing Server. 3. Reinstall the TS Licensing Server for connection. The problem stills exist even if I restored the workable OS image of several…

Network files take long time to load
by Guest MLM450@hotmail.com- 1 reply

Hi everyone, I need some help understanding how files are transferred in a TS environment. We have a client that is using our software to open image files that are stored on a server. There is a very big delay in opening TIF image files, while all other formats open quickly. File size is not the problem because the TIFs are smaller than the other images. If we copy the files to the desktop and open from there, there is no delay at all. The client says they have determined that the delay is in the upload of the file from the local computer to the TS session. I have very little TS experience. I am not sure I understand what this upload is. Can someone explain? …

Terminal Services printing problem
by Guest Josh - DSTECH- 1 reply
Good morning, I'm having a problem printing in Terminal Services on a Windows 2003 Server. The printer works fine locally and is a LaserJet 1300 connected via a parallel port. However, when I connect to the server the printer does not show up. The driver is loaded on the server and I checked Event Viewer to see if it was complaining about it and there are no entries. There are for the other printer on the PC since those drivers are not loaded, which is ok. It also does not seem to be even creating a TS port for that printer. Any ideas would be much appreciated. -Josh

I've got about 15 PC's who VPN into site and then use Windows XP remote desktop connection to connect to a Windows 2003 SP2 Terminal server. The problem is 5 of the PC's can't connect and they get the following error message: "A licensing error occurred while the client was attempting to connect. (Licensing timed out.) Please try connecting to the remote computer again." I can't see any event errors on either client or server and everybody else is connecting ok. Can somebody point me in the correct direction to investigate this problem further... Thanks

Hello, we got this situation that we got a demo server and we only wants to allow a person to login with remote desktop with a specific user account that is restricted to a certain IP-range. In other words, we want to distribute this account to a third party and make sure that the originating connection stems from a specific IP-range and nothing else? I cant find this setting for individual accounts so I wonder if this is even possible? Firewall filtering is not possible since we want to restrict the remote access on individual windows account basis.

by Guest Joe McHale- 1 reply

In our environment we have a Windows 2003 server acting as the Terminal Services License Server. We have one Windows 2000 Citrix server and one Windows 2003 Citrix server. The TS License server shows Existing Windows 2000 Server-terminal Service cal type built-in and temporary licenses for Windows 2003. My question is if I install licenses for the 2003 citrix server will that do anything to the built-in windows 2000 cals. The information I been able to get from our VAR has been very hazy

Hi, I am a consultant and normally connect to clients servers using MS VPN and remote desktop. However, I just installed Cisco VPN Client 5.0.01.0600 on my Win XP Professional SP2 pc when a new client required the Cisco client. Since installing the Cisco client, I get the error message 'The connection to the remote computer was lost' when I try to use RDC to connect to servers that I have always been able to connect to before (I am still using MS VPN with them). The only server that I can connect to with Remote Desktop is the new one for which I have used the Cisco client to establish VPN. If anyone has an idea what might be causing my problem, pl…

RDP - Login Problem - Access Is Denied
by Guest Aidan-Eire- 4 replies

Hi, I am suddenly getting an error when trying to logion to a WIN2K3 server with RDP authenticating from a domain. The error I get is: "the system cannot log you on due to the following error. Access is denied" Sometimes after multiple tries I can login. On google searches I'm seeing hints towards DNS and active directory. For testing, I created a temporary local logon on the server in question and can access via RDP with this logon no problem. Can anyone shed any light on this for me please? Thanks in Advance, Aidan..
