I am trying to use GP to install Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint viewers for a number of Terminal Services users. Microsoft Office 2003 is already installed on the server but I want to use the viewers because we don't have enough licenses.

RDP - Login Problem - Access Is Denied
by Guest Aidan-Eire- 0 replies

Hi, I am suddenly getting an error when trying to logion to a WIN2K3 server with RDP authenticating from a domain. The error I get is: "the system cannot log you on due to the following error. Access is denied" Sometimes after multiple tries I can login. On google searches I'm seeing hints towards DNS and active directory. For testing, I created a temporary local logon on the server in question and can access via RDP with this logon no problem. Can anyone shed any light on this for me please? Thanks in Advance, Aidan..

I have built a server with US Regional Settings. I have now changed to UK date format however users are still getting the US date format. I have fixed this on a previous server by changing the format, deleting user profiles and then getting them to log in again. This is not working on this server. Any help appreciated.

USB port mapping using remote desktop on Windows CE 5.0 device
by Guest Johan Huygh - Freebility- 4 replies

Hi, I'm using a Gotive (http://www.gotive.com) H42 device to connect to a terminal server. We want to read out specific hardware over USB with the H42 device, and the read-out software resides on the terminal server. Can someone help me with this ? Apparently you can eg. use a USB keyboard over the remote desktop connection, but you are not able to active the checkboxes "disk drives", "printers" and "serial ports" in the options panel of the logon screen. So I expect this type of specific funcionality is also out of the question... Thank you for all your help! Johan Huygh johan.huygh AT freebility.be

2003 Terminal Server and Vista Remote Desktop
by Guest Dennis_S- 3 replies

We had a laptop that was junked out by HP through Best Buy. Best Buy gave us a new replacement, but we were not able to get one with XP. It came with Vista Home Premium. I am not able to log onto our 2003 Terminal Server using the Vista version of Remote Desktop. I get this warning - Remote Desktop cannot verify the identity of the computer you are trying to connect to. This problem can occur if - 1) The remote computer is running a version of Windows that is earlier than Vista. 2) The remote computer is configured to support only the RDP security layer. Do you want to connect anyway? YES/NO If I choose Yes, TS will not log me on. I get a…

We have a windows 2003 terminal server. One of our users called me this morning and said she was sent a .jpg image by the another user and she received an error when attempting to open the 1 mb image. The error she received was "The image is too large". The application "Microsoft Photo Editor" is what was being used to open the image when she double clicks on it... I then tried my own terminal server session andreceived the same error message. The configuration is set to 16 bit graphics for terminal server sessions. I changed it to 24, logged off and back on again and received the same error. In the past there have not been any issues opening .jpg im…

Licensing Problem

have a client who has SBS 2003 R2 with a Server 2000 server in Application Sharing mode behind it. They have quite a few users that are connecting to the terminal server remotely. The SBS server is the licensing server for the terminal. I just started getting reports that some of the users are receiving messages as follows: "The remote computer disconnected the session because of an error in the licensing protocol. Please try connecting to the remote computer again or contact your server administrator." Another error message is also generated about remote license being expired but I don't have the exact verbiage on that one. When I check terminal licensing …

Local Profile adds domain to end of account
by Guest Garrett1226- 2 replies

I recently created a new Terminal Services Cluster group of servers. I did a copy of all the local profiles in Docs & Settings from the orgional Terminal Server to the new cluster servers. For some reason, a couple of users generate branch new local profiles when they log into the cluster instead of utilizing the existing one. The new local profile adds the domain to the profile name, example; JSmith.MO (where MO is the Domain name). Any ideas why this would do this for some users but not others? thanks....

Getting Started with W2K3 Terminal Services

We have a Windows 2003 Server R2 Standard Edition. It is in a domain that has SBS2000 as the domain controller and its role is designated as a "File Server". This Windows 2003 Server has our MRP software installed on it. We are going to setup (10) XP Pro systems on our manufacturing floor (used by more than one user) to access the application on the Windows 2003 Server using the Termianl Services capability of its OS. As we understand the licensing, we just need to purchase (10) TS CALs in per Device mode; however we are confused by the following from Microsoft website: "Windows Server License The Windows Server 2003 R2 licensing model requires a server licens…

New TS on an SBS2003 network, general questions
by Guest Rosewood- 1 reply

I've been working with SBS2003 for a few years now, but I've never had to deploy a Terminal Server. I realize that some of these questions are very basic, but I appreciate the feedback all the same. On the hardware side of things, the white paper seems a bit outdated so it seems like I don't need much hardware for only 9 people connecting in and actively using the system at the same time. On the software side of things, I just need Server 2003 correct? I can purchase this from any vendor (a la Newegg). As for the actual TS licenses, what exactly would I need for 9 people that will be connecting remotely? I've found many great resources for SBS2003…

What would cause an PID to die off
by Guest Gordon- 1 reply

I need to open a fairly large application using TS on NT 2000. When I open my connection, I can see the application starting, but it soon dies. I can open the application using VNC, and when logging on directly to the server. The server is part of our intranet and is not hosted remotley. it seems as if the application is too much for terminal services to handle. Should I upgrade to NT 2003?

Terminal Server Profile
by Guest Rush- 4 replies

I configured a NLB Terminal Server. Users are in AD logging to domain with Local Profile. I configured in user account properties 'Terminal Services Profile' to folder in network for individual user. Each and every time I'm logging to 2 nodes profile is working properly but problem is when I log to other severs (Member) (didn't check in PCs)Terminal servers profile will apply. Such as desktop, shortcuts documents created on desktop etc. We want to isolate terminal server profile and domain user profile. Does some one know what's wrong with above mention issue? Or another method of keep same profile for users even user log to different node?

XP accessing Windows 2000 server
by Guest Darwin- 2 replies

I have 2 laptops both running XP PRO. I have a server running Windows 2000 server. The TS server is running in application mode. One of the laptops can access the server ok, the other had it's temporary license expire. Why was it running with a temporary license? The laptops were purchased at different times has something changed with XP? My understanding was that XP PRO came with a license to access TS under 2000 server without requiring the purchase of additional licenses. Any ideas? Should I run the TS server in administrator mode in order to get both laptops to have valid licenses? Thanks

Monitoring and reporting
by Guest Jonathon Moore- 2 replies

Hi there, One of my clients is a medium sized accountants for who we recently implemented terminal services on a server 2003 machine. Now my client would like a regular report into what the users are doing as it's harder to keep an eye on someone who's not sitting in the same office as you. Just some general security stuff like; who's logging on and off and when, what users are accessing with the TS. What do you think would be a good, cost effective method of doing this for me to look into. Many thanks, Jonathon Moore

general questions on Remote Desktop (XP Pro)
by Guest ginahoy- 9 replies

I will soon upgrade from WinME to XP. I was reviewing list of differences between Home and Pro. One utility that caught my attention was Remote Desktop. When traveling, I sometimes wish I had access to a file on my home system. I have some general questions about Remote Desktop: 1) Let's say I'm using a computer at an Internet Cafe. Does that computer have to have special software or be running XP Pro? 2) Is it necessary to pay my ISP for a static IP? (e.g., how can I locate my computer via the Internet?) 3) Do I have to leave my system running, or can I use a LAN card with wake-on-lan feature? Thanks!

IP Printer goes offline in Terminal Server session
by Guest niles- 5 replies

I have a printer setup with a Linksys print server. If I add this printer as a local printer to my computer, I can print all day with no problems. If I add this printer onto our terminal server so that our offsite users can print to it, it will work for one or two pages, then go into offline mode. If I delete the printer and re-add it, it will work again for one or two pages, then it will go offline. I can continuously ping the print server even when it is showing that it is offline. Any ideas?

Terminal Server License Migration Gotchas?
by Guest Jamestechman- 1 reply
I will be migrating the terminal server license to a new server. From research it appears that I will need to call MS clearing house to transition the license info to the new server. I'm hoping this is basically it. However; wondering if there are any gotchas to look out for or some best practices. Saw a mention about using lsreport to document license info, any other good tips is welcome. Thank you. James Chong (MVP) MCSE | M+, S+, MCTS, Security+ msexchangetips.blogspot.com

Hi I have a windows 2003 environment with an active Group Policy. I changed a few items but when a user starts the windows explorer, the favorites menu item (between view and tools) is missing. As far as I know I did not set this feature in the Group Policy so it has to be controlled by another setting in the GPO, but which one? Any help appreciated Thanks Luit Krol

Lost tscc.msc???
by Guest robert.waters- 1 reply

Somehow, the terminal server config snap-in, on my new-ish Windows 2003 terminal server, is gone. How might I recover this file? And, how might I go about determining if any other system files are gone? I checked the installation disc, but no luck; there *was* a file named TSCC.MS_, but renaming it didn't work. Maybe it was compressed. I would prefer to not have to install this on a spare box (as I don't have one), nor do I have the disk space for a VM. But I guess if push came to shove, I could make it work, though it would certainly be a pain. If only there were some magical resource that could make a snap- in appear from thin air (a call to MS? fairy g…
