deny ts connection based on ip?
by Guest robert.waters- 10 replies

I have been tasked with only allowing a certain user account to connect to the TS from the internal network (that person should not be allowed to log in from their home anymore). Is there any way to accomplish this, besides figuring out that person's home IP address and denying it at the firewall? I am open to anything (shell/vb scripting, whatever). Thanks!

Can't connect to COM1
by Guest Bob- 5 replies

Hi, I've an application that uses the COM1 port on Windows Server 2003. The application connects fine to COM1 when I'm using the console, but when I TS in, it can not connect. Is there something about TS that prevents the user from accessing the COM1 port? p.s. I used remote desktop connecting to the console ID-0 and not connecting to the console ID-x, but it fails either way. Thanks! --- Bob

Moving from Windows 2000 TS Licensing to Windows 2003
by Guest jpifer- 1 reply

There is a similar thread about migrating a licensing server, but it's not specific to their situation other than installing a new server. So I don't want to hijack their thread. We are currently running a Windows 2000 license server with 500 TSCALs. Most of our clients are Windows 2000 Pro, but we are moving to Windows Vista Business in the near future. We are looking at moving to Windows 2003 on our Terminal Servers so I need to upgrade our Terminal Server License Server to Windows 2003 to support BOTH Windows 2000 Terminal Servers and Windows 2003 Terminal Servers. I'm looking for the the proper way to do this upgrade. When I upgrade the Licen…

Access to Scheduled Tasks
by Guest Jon Wood- 0 replies

I am hosting Microsoft Navision on several W2K3 terminal servers and my problem is that within Navision the users have access to Jet Reports. To enable the users to scheduled reports they need access to scheduled task however they always get Access is Denied when they try and open scheduled tasks. If I elevate their rights to administrator this problem goes away but obviously this is not an option for me. I have looked within the GPO section for the task scheduler to see if this will help me but I seem unable to find a setting or settings that work. Has anyone any idea how I go about giving a standard domain user access to task scheduler without giving the…

RDP display gone bad?
by Guest gscanga- 0 replies

This one has me baffled. I began troubleshooting a server and quickly noticed that the system volume (C: drive) only had 3Kb free space. When I tried to remote desktop to the server to navigate around and possibly free up some space, I was greeted with a half-displayed logon window. After blindly logging in, here are some things that I done; I managed to free up over 700Mb on the drive I re-installed the RDP client (v5.1.2600.2180) on the server. I installed the latest RDP client (v6.0) on the server. Still have the same issues - any other RDP session to other servers displays fine for me. Any ideas?

Allowing Access to Approved Apps
by Guest Grant- 3 replies

I am looking for someone to point me in the right direction, please. I understand how you can give a user access to on particular application through Group Policy. What I am wondering is if you can give users access to a group of five applications, which they can choose from. I am hoping to not give them access to the desktop at all, just a menu group of the approved apps. Is that possible? Any tips on that would be very helpful. Thanks, Grant ------------------

Throttling DDE's Thread Count or CPU Utilization
by Guest jwgoerlich@gmail.com- 0 replies

Hello group, I am working on a performance issue. This is on a Windows 2003 Standard server SP1 with Office 2003. The hardware is a 2 dual-core 32- bit system with 4 GB of memory. There are several legacy applications that send data to Excel using DDE (Dynamic Data Exchange). The apps run under terminal services, with multiple users running multiple copies. If two or users pull data into Excel at the same time, it overloads the server. Let us look at a single user. CPU utilization shows at 40-50% for Excel. Context switches are around 5,000 to 6,000 per second. The total system page fault/sec shows around 9,000-10,000. It appears that each data point has …

by Guest Saqib Ali- 4 replies

Hello All, I am working on to deploy Terminal Services for visitors. I need to disable "Explore" in the right-click context menu. I know how to disable the right-click context menu completely, but that is not what I want to. I just want to remove that "Explorer" item or gray it out. (screenshot at http://security-basics.blogspot.com/2007/08/how-to-disable-explore-and-open-folder.html ) And now page 2: I also want to disable the "Open Folder" button when you download and save a file using IE. RDP Connection Error
by Guest Jeff- 1 reply
I have always been able to log into my server as administrator for a while now, but now I get an error that says "Because of an error in data encryption, this session will end. Please try connecting to the remote computer again." then it disconnects. I don't use any data encryption that I know of, especially not since yesterday. Any ideas on what caused this and how to fix it?

If you restrict each login to one session, what happens if a second user connects from another client using the same login? Do they take over the existing session with existing applications and data, do they kill the existing session (with possible loss of data) and start a new one or do they get refused a connection? Is it configurable? TIA

SQL 2005 on a Terminal Server?
by Guest bo_dong@yahoo.com- 6 replies

Can I install SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition with Reporting Services and Analysis Services on a Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition with Terminal Services? I also installed IIS and volume lincensed Office 2007 on the terminal server. Then users can remote into the terminal server and interact with sql data using locally installed Access and consume sql reports using local website. When I turn off remote connection to the sql server, then the data is only accessible and visible to users who are in the remote session. Will this plan work? Anything special during install and setup? Thanks

Terminal services failing to open Actinic v8 on windows 2000
by Guest Gordon- 0 replies
Our company recently upgraded to actinic v8 e-commerce software. I installed the software on our server (logged in as admin), then created a login for my ts connection. It worked fine for about 1 week, but now fails each time I try and load it. It displays the actinic splash page, then drops the ts client with no error message. Its as if the actinic software is already running on the server, but its not. I can access no problem, using vnc, and fine if I log on directly to the server, but not TS. We ran earlier actinic software in the same way, and its fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Server stops responding occasionally
by Guest Ricky- 2 replies

Hello, We are experiencing an odd issue with one of our Windows 2003 servers. This server is running Websense web-filtering for our organization. However, it "crashes" a lot in that the users start complaining about getting filtering errors almost once every week. When I try to Remote Desktop into the server, it prompts for domain credentials. Once I click Log in, it just stops responding at that point. All I see is a gray screen. I have checked with Websense and they have never heard of any such issues caused by their product. I have also checked event logs and can't find anything significant. The server just doesn't come back to life until manually re…

Terminal Server registry
by Guest Jeff- 1 reply

On our stand-alone terminal server users can use one of our applications as normal domain users. The initialization of the app writes registry entries that configure database connections, etc. When I move the user to one of my farms, which is identical on apps, etc as the stand-alone, the user gets an automation error when trying to log into the application. If I make domain users local administrators it works flawlessly. I have even made the app work as local admin for the user, logged out and had it save to the roaming profile, remove the domain users from the local administrators to preserve all the settings. once i do this the user gets the automa…

How to move user profiles from system drive to free up space
by Guest Lajos- 1 reply

On one of our production server (HP ProLiant 380D - 2 HD Raid1, C and D partitions) we are running out of space on the system drive. I was advised to move the user profiles from the 'Documents and Settings' folder on the system drive to the D drive. I have already read the q236621 KB article, but before I try the procedure I would like to see if anyone would have any experience with this procedure, or perhaps could recommend something else. Thanks in advance!
