Terminal server connection temporarily hangs
by Guest steve- 0 replies

Hello We have just deployed an application to our users using Windows 2003 terminal services. As far as I can tell, all of our timeout values for idle/disconnected sessions seem to be working fine. The only problem is that when users work on other applications for a while and leave the terminal app idle (for maybe 30 minutes or more), the terminal app is frozen/hung for 30 seconds or so when they return to it. For instance, they will click a menu in the terminal application and nothing will happen. If they do nothing and wait for 20 seconds or so, all the sudden the menu appears and everything works as it should. No notification from the terminal server a…

Blank Screen after RDP Logon
by Guest jama- 1 reply
After logging in using RDP, I get a blank screen for a while and then disconnect. Once it looked like the desktop would load but only flashed on the screen for a fraction of a second. I think I saw it say something like "hm sync window error" but it was literally a flash on the screen. VNC and LogMeIn both work fine, but I would prefer to use the RDP client only. I have tried disabling the bitmap caching, different resolutions and color depth, removing VNC, tried MTU 1300 and 1500, tried different user accounts, and am out of ideas. Thanks for your help.

In a terminal services session, is the default printer set on a per session basis or per server basis? In other words, if user A sets the default printer on the terminal server and then user B sets the default printer to a different printer, do A and B now have the same default printer? Vincent

TS licences not being issued
by Guest Rob S- 2 replies
Hi, A couple of months ago I installed a Windows 2003 server, with terminal services, and at that time I enabled TS but didn't have any licences installed, so it started issuing temporary ones. In the meantime I purchased and installed a retail pak 10 user licence (per user). It shows up in licencing as Total 10 Available 10. The temporary ones are still being used, and today I got a message saying they would expire in 0 days. Does this mean it will automatically start using the "real" ones, or do I need to do something? thanks in advance -Rob robatwork at mail dot com

Screen Res
by Guest Mike K- 1 reply

Morning all, We have a TS 2003 Farm running very nicely with all thin clients / PCs using RDP to access a standardised desktop. A single application has to be run in 1024x768 120% fonts. The company that support the product tell me that we can make this work but I'm lost on how to do it. All of the users connect using their native screen resolution (1280x1024 for the most part) and simply login using RDP. I must be missing something here but I guess they are potentially talking about publishing the application or something? Can anyone shed some light on this for me please? Many thanks, Mike

KB951748 creates problems with USB printers
by Guest WDS- 0 replies
If a user has KB951748 installed, their USB printers will no longer connect properly to Terminal Services. Usually not even showing up as an available printer on the server. When they log off their PC will hang for several minutes. After logging off their printer will show on the server as still connected. While they are connected the printer does not show up. restarting the print spooler does clear out the old connections. If they untick printers under resources before doing the RDP connection then they logg off normally with no hang. If KB951748 is uninstalled the problem goes away until autoupdate puts it back in. Service Pack 3 appears to h…

Temporary Licenses for Windows 2000 Terminal Services CALS

I have just taken over support of an old W2000 (with SP4) server acting as a terminal server and a license server. Everything has been fine for about 4 or 5 years relating to external clients connecting via terminal services. Recently 1 client got the message "Terminal services temporary license expires in X days". When the X reached to 0 the user stopped being able to connect. If i try and connect i get the error "The remote computer disconnected the session because of an error in the licensing protocol. Please try connecing to the remote computer again or contact your server administrtor." Event ID 1004 "The terminal server cannot issue a client l…

Redirected Printer Disappears

One particular terminal server user on a Windows 2003 Terminal server uses printer redirection to map a local HP 1018 Laser Printer. This has been working for a year or so. Just recently the printer has been disappearing from the users profile. They are able to print to it and then it just suddenly disappears. Server 2008 TS Web Access Remote systems cannot connect from the Internet
by Guest Jon Osborn- 7 replies

Please forgive I am new to TS Web access on 2008. We have installed a test server and installed TS and IIS on it. We are looking to publish programs to TS Web Access, have a hole poked in the fire wall to allow Internet users to access our "site" and use their programs from home. I have TS Web access working great on the internal network but when the same laptop is at home and we connect to our TS Web Access server from outside the network we get an error that states "The Remote Computer could not be found". What could have done wrong? Do we need to open more ports for RDC? I was under the impression we just need port 80 & 443 open. Thanks…

TS deployment & licenses
by Guest Russ Goodwin- 4 replies

My customer currently runs a small office in workgroup mode with 7 PC's. Her 8 employees remotely RDP to each desktop and work from home. (2 are part time and share a PC). We want to colsolidate the desktops by putting a Windows 2003 Terminal Server on the network. Questions: Can the Terminal Server stay as a member server, and use local user accounts for her employees - or does there have to be a true Active Directory domain controller on the network? The Terminal Server server can also be the Terminal Server Licensing Server (i.e. both roles on the same hardware), correct? She needs a Windows Server 2003 CAL and a TS 2003 CAL for each employee…

Gurus, What is your position on remotely installing software via RDP/Terminal Services? In other words, sitting at your desk somewhere, logging into a remote server using the Remote Desktop protocol, and installing software. I believe ""shadow key corruption" could occur in this manner and advise against it. I am looking for other thoughts however. -- Spin

KB/Q Search, no RDP sfter reboot
by Guest STWright- 0 replies

Hi I have found an article in the past that explained the difference between a User initiated shutdown and a System initiated shutdown. Many of the repsonses to similar questions about "no rdp after reboot" mention the use of shutdown.exe, and this is indeed the fix offered by the KB/Q article I am looking for. However, I would like to be able to qoute the article number in some documentation for some procedures I am putting together. I have searched high and low but I am now requesting your help...who ever might come along. 930045 is not what I am after as it suggests a hanging server and that's not what I get. The article I want centered arou…

Currently we've setup our Terminal Server on Windows 2008 server. We have already 5 User CALs which is installed on a existing Terminal Server running on Windows 2003 Server (also the AD domain) My Questions are: How do I transfer the existing CALs to Windows 2008 Terminal Server? Is it possible? or Do I need to setup TS Licensing on Win2008 server and then move the CALs from Win2003 Server? or Do I need purchase fresh CALs for Windows 2008 Server? Any solutions would be appreciated Thanks Prakash
