Licensing
by Guest RandyH- 6 replies

I'm confused... Does the TS licensing server need to be on a domain controller? I have a 2003 TS where I have the licenses installed. Recently we deployed a 2008 TS published apps. my boss told me to move the licenses to that 2008 member server. Since then my 2003 TS cannot see a TS Licensing server and says its under the grace period again, BAH! Do I need a 2008 domain controller to host the TS Licenses? and then the 2003 TS will "see" the licensing server? Any help, thank you so much, RandyH

Missing files/folders
by Guest Grainne- 6 replies
We have a customer that uses terminal services with small business server 2003. Frequently they come to us with a recurring issue wherebey folders/files have disappeared, when they search for them, they are found in a different location. They have asked there users and no-one is admitting to moving them manually. However, one user said when he was working remotely his screen flickered and the folder/files he was looking at had disappeared, we found them the next day in a different location. Normally, we would put this down to user error, however today we logged onto their server remotely to move some folder/files for them that had been moved to a diffe…

Can you do it? My experience is that 2008 retail CALs won't work on a 2003 terminal server, despite several people stating that it will. Can anyone shed some light on this (I get "license code not recognized" trying to enter a valid CAL) thanks -Rob robatwork at mail dot com

Your Remote Desktop session has ended

Hello all -- I have a Windows 2008 Std installation with Terminal Services installed. The server is a member server of an Active Directory domain. I initially installed and used the Terminal Server on the 2008 machine during the trial period. I setup Remote Apps and had copied the .rdp files to my local workstation. Everything was working fine and life was good. I really enjoy the RemoteApp feature. I later activated Windows and soon thereafter ran VMware's CONVERT to P2V the machine to an ESX 3.5 host. No issues here. When I logged into the machine for the first time under ESX, it deteched that the hardware had changed and I needed to re-ac…

icon images on terminal server
by Guest MM- 6 replies

Following a recent reboot all of the PDF and MSOffice document and program icons became plain white rectangles, as if there is no program association. Double clicking on the icon still opens the file so the association is still there - just no icon image. I deleted the icon cache (C:\WINNT\ShellIconCache) AND ran rebuild icons in TWEAK UI AND rebooted - no change. Folder icons and Internet Explorer, Outlook, Recycle Bin, Zip Files, Wordpad, Calculator display properly it is MSOffice and PDF that seem to be the issue. Suggestions?

LifeCam VX-3000 on Windows 2003 Server
by Guest Ken Cobler- 6 replies

I have a LifeCam VX-3000 webcam installed on a Windows 2003 server. I plugged the camera in the usb port on the server, the OS asked for the CD, downloaded drivers, but, would not load the applications that come on the CD. The applications on the CD will only load on Windows XP or Vista. I am not concerned about the applications that came with the LifeCam VX-3000, because I am trying to use the camera with another application that can capture images from a Video For Windows source. The image capture application works perfect capturing images from the LifeCam VX-3000, even on a remote desktop session, as long as I am logged in as an administrator. …

Restrict WAN access
by Guest Rodrigo_live- 6 replies

Hi. In my company there’s a Windows 2003 Terminal Server that users access to work every day. W e need to restrict access to LAN only TS for some users and LAN & WAN access to others. I’ve managed to get TS Console to identify the two NICs in the server (LAN and WAN) by duplicating the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\WinStations\RDP-Tcp Key in the registry (renaming each one of them after). This way I can distinct the LAN and WAN connection and set access port (LAN uses default 3389 and WAN uses another port) and color depth etc etc. On the WAN adapter I’ve set only the group who should get access outside the net…

Single server scenario workable?
by Guest anthonyx26- 6 replies
I have some clients who, for budgetary reasons, only have a single server (WS2008) in their office but would still like to have the benefits and security of using TS for their employees. Is it possible to configure a single server as a locked down TS (using GPOs) for use by multiple remote users? It's currently not configured as a domain controller, but I suppose could be. I realize a single server is not ideal...in fact I always recommend and have always configured scenarios with at least a separate TS and DC and file server. - anthonyx26

Home directiories and folder redirection
by Guest Phil- 6 replies

hope someone can enlighten me here as i'm quite new to Terminal servers Is rootdrv2.cmd still valid in Citrix. If so do you still have to set it on every TS. I thought that TS home drive Group policy setting would now be the preferred opion. Leading on with the next question If users have their home drives mapped in ADUC say to H drive, is there a point in setting up TS home drive as the users would surely have 2 locations to keep their documents in??. My take is if they used pure TS then use the TS home drive If I mixture of 2 then Bothe ADUC home drives and TS Home drives but redirect theTS Home drive to the Users Home Directory Finally AppDa…

no longer able to remote in to server
by Guest duke- 6 replies

Windows Server 2003. Months ago when we got the server new, I was able to remote into it from my office. Cannot remember if I had to enable this on the server. Then I installed terminal server to try it out, and after playing around with it I took it back out because I was afraid it would cut me off from remote access after the trial ended. Now I can no longer remote in "The client could not connect to the remote computer". Is there something I have forgotten to reset?

Terminal server settings...

Hi, I got a few questions regarding TS and how to configure the following; I've configured each of our remote users using the RDP 6 client - it launches our custom datebase application when then login. Anyways, I've configured the group policies to - Keep-Alive the connection -Enabled (no one likes to login in if they are inactive for a while) - Automatic reconnection -Enabled (reconnect if they loose connectivity) - Restrict Terminal server users to a single remote session - Enabled That all works well, the issues I'm facing are people are shutting down the session (using the x in the yellow bar) but the application is still running. When they at…

Outlook profiles and mb mappings
by Guest JayMac- 6 replies

We have users that need to access community (resource) mailboxes on our network. We have 6 Terminal Servers load balanced for our TS users. Each time a User disconnects from a sessions and then logon, they have to remap to the resource mailboxes via Outlook, even if they get re-pointed to the TS server they previoulsy had a session with. q 1.) Is there a way for their MB mappings to remain? q 2.) Does the TS server tear down the mapi profile for each user after the session ends? If not, they why wouldn't it remember the mailbox mappings? Any insight truly appreciated. Thanks in advance. JayMac

Client login on TS triggers msiexec.exe problem
by Guest Kjell- 6 replies
Hi I'm having this wierd problem with my TS Win2003 Std Ed Some but not all clients triggers 1, 2 or 3 processes of msiexec.exe when login in with remote desktop (mstsc.exe). This might be a completely normally behaivour, but the pattern I have makes it a problem, and I've never seen this before. 1. The msiexec.exe locks up 50-70% of the resources, making it into a severe lagging situation for all. 2. It never stops, the same host machine (client) will trigger the same set of msiexec.exe running for identical period of time every *** time it's login in, it doesn't matter if I'm login in using a domain account or a local account, it's the client mac…

Can I force a remote session to logoff?
by Guest Mack Jones- 6 replies
We frequently have users from oversees logging into workstations here in the U.S. using RDP. Sometimes these sessions lock up and the user needs to be force off so they can be reconnected normally. Is there a way for me from a command prompt using admin rights to connect to the workstation and force it to logoff the user. Or is there any other way. I know that I can force the machine to shutdown and reboot but I don't want to do that if it's a workstation that has multiple users connecting to it. Rebooting would kick them all off. I just want to kick off the one. Any advice would be appreciated.
