Win2008 Terminal Services Mandatory Profile Problems
by Guest Kat- 2 replies
My Windows 2008 terminal server is not on a domain. I would like to set mandatory profiles for the users connecting to terminal services. I have followed the instructions in the “Managing Roaming User Data Deployment Guide” but am having problems. I created a folder called Mandatory Profiles in the root of C: and have shared it out giving Everyone Full Permissions. Then I created a folder inside called mandatory.v2 as per the instructions. I set up my user with the settings I wanted and then went to the User Profile dialog box where I Copied the desired profile assigning permissions to Everyone as outlined in the instructions. Then I went to the fol…

application optimization question
by Guest Cool Dude- 1 reply

Hi, I've got 3 machines running on the same network, and the behavior just doesn't make any sense to me. Could anyone explain it? Machine 1: Server 2003, 1gb -- file server storing access databases and excel .xla files Machine 2: Vanilla XP Client, 1 gb ram Machine 3: Server 2003, 1 gb ram -- terminal server All in the same room on the same 100mb switched network, so unlikely that network speed is the deciding factor. If a user logs onto the XP client, opens excel, runs the add-in, which accesses the access databases and writes a report, the process runs SLOWER than that same user logging onto a terminal server session. Screen updates in E…

GPO settings for Intranet security zone ignored
by Guest The Cavalry- 5 replies
When a user logs into a PC on our domain a GP is applied with the relevant Intranet security zone sites. When the same user logs into the Terminal server these settings are ignored even though the relevant GP is applied. I have therefore setup seperate OU and GP for Terminal Server and set the security settings on the machine. I have set GP to force local security settings and not use the user ones but still this does not work. This is very annoying as users are prompted for their username and password everytime they access our Intranet. Any help muach appreciated

Can XP theme be run under W2008 and TS.
by Guest ThomasAJ- 2 replies

I know that a Vista desktop experience can be set up under W2008 (I have added the feature but cannot work out how to use it - maybe because users are still using RDP 5.2 - but that's another question) but I would like to still have our TS users experiencing Windows XP. Is this possible under W2008. -- Regards Tom

by Guest yuvalBD- 0 replies

Hi, I am testing ts 2008 farm env' (include TS gateway, ts servers,ts session broker) using smart card to validate user logon. My problem is that sometimes , about 1 of 5, logon attempts using smart card Is not complete. i mean that instead of complete the logon process, the session is stuck in Logon screen, waiting for the user to enter username/pass. usually after 1/2 attempt the user succeed to complete the logon process. this Behavior is happing exactly in two separate Env' that we have. This is not happing if we using regular username\password method. than'x yuval.

Terminal Server License Questions.
by Guest Steven L Chan- 1 reply

Brief Summary: We had a Windows 2000 DC that was a Terminal Server Licensing box, which distributed CALs to our Windows 2000 Terminal Server users. Recently, we have demoted all Windows 2000 DC and installed 3 new Windows 2003 DC's. Therefore, the Terminal Server Licensing on the former Windows 2000 DC ceased to work. I had to installed a Terminal Server Licensing on one of our Windows 2003 DC this morning, because none of our users were able to connect to our Windows 2000/2003 terminal servers. I was able to obtain new Windows 2003 CALs thru Microsoft and everyting worked out fine. Previously, we've purchased 400 Windows 2000 and 275 Windows 2003, termi…

Local USB peripherals within TS session?
by Guest £Jim- 3 replies

Hi, Is there any way to have a locally attached (USB) device, for example a scale, appear within a terminal server session? Or are we still restricted to local printers and drives only? We are connecting XP clients to a 2003 terminal server. Thanks

adding W2k8 terminal server to sbs2k3 domain
by Guest TomMiami- 5 replies
Current situation: SBS2k3 domain, 5 users inhouse running a server based database. Future situation requires 5 users in-house plus 5-10 users in-field. Please let me know if I am on the right (best and economical) path with this scenario: New Windows Server 2008 5 user (+ 5 later if/when reqd) New Terminal Services Lic 5 user (+ 5 later if/when reqd) Continue to serve db on SBS2k3 to in-house users and in-field users through new TS (W2k8) server to sbs2k3. I believe RemoteApp will be a winner for us. Do we need 5 additional licences for the SBS2k3? Any suggestions would be greatley appreciated!

Thin client support for TS Gateway
by Guest lamaslany- 10 replies
We have been using Terminal Services for our desktop provision to staff for many years now and as a result we have many dozens of HP thin clients out in the field (and by field I mean teleworking locations and in the homes of our staff). 80% of our users are able to work remotely in this fashion and the remaining 20% work on the terminal servers using thin clients on site. We are looking to move to Windows Server 2008 and one of the main features we are looking to implement is the TS Gateway. Unfortunately while users with access to PCs and laptops (~20%) should have no problems I am growing concerned for the thin client users. Is there a list of sup…

Windows TS 2008 + licensserver
by Guest HellslayeR- 13 replies

Hello. I'm experiencing a problem with windows 2008 terminal server and my windows 2008 licens server. The problem is quite simple: The license server dosent give licenses to my 2008 terminal servers but it will however give out licenses to windows 2003 servers. This leads me to belive that there's some setting I've overlooked at my license server or my 2008 terminal servers. My TS can discover the license server and bring up information about how many cals and so forth so they can see and bring up information from the licens server. Using group policy I've specified the license server to be used. On the license server itself I've added the ser…

Windows 2008 TS in Windows 2000 AD
by Guest Ketchup- 10 replies

Hello everyone, I am working with a client to upgrade their Windows 2000 based network to Windows 2008. I am a bit constricted on the number of servers that I can have and had to make certain sacrifices forcing me to run Terminal Services on a Windows 2008 Domain Controller. I realize that's not recommended practice, but it's better then running a DC on a heavily used SQL and Apps server. I ran adprep with /forestprep and /domainprep /gpprep switches on the Windows 2000 AD environment successfully. I was able to add a Windows 2008 DC that will also be the new Terminal Server. The dcpromo process completed successfully. Dcdiag and manual che…

Terminal Server Slow Performance
by Guest JMcNally- 4 replies

I have been having an issue with a Terminal Server in a Small Business Server Standar Edition Environment. I have attached the Terminal Server as instructed to the Domain. First created the Server and then ran the connect computer via IE. It worked fine. Original problem was related to Terminal Server slow performance. We upgraded the Server from 4 GB of RAM to a hefty 12 GB of RAM. I know the limitation of the $ GB in a 32 bit environment but I figured that it would allow a better performance - since it never hurst to have plenty of RAM. The server is a dual Xeon processor and so far I have tried making changes and tweaks to the registry to see i…

Stored Usernames and Passwords
by Guest wmeehan79@gmail.com- 3 replies

We have a Citrix server that until now was not a member of the domain. To overcome this there was a stored password setup under the Admin account, this provided access to the file server on the domain. I've now joined the Citrix server to the domain but i'm having authentication problems. It seems that the Citrix machine is still using the stored login, even tho I did remove that. I've tried disabling the Protected Storage Service, and deleting the reg keys, but that's had no effect. I have no idea where else to look, so any advice would be greatly received. The server is running Windows Server 2003. Thanks Wayne

Curious Problem, Terminal server hangs at random, and then takes d
by Guest Mordekai- 2 replies

Hi All, I run a domain with 3 DC's, 2 TS servers, 2 Exchange servers and a host of DB servers. One site in particular has a reoccurring issue with the Terminal services Server. All will run fine for some time, sometimes a day sometimes a week, then all of a sudden I will get a call from one of the terminal services users mentioning that one program or another that they are using is stalled with an hourglass... I then reattach my own TS session to check the problem (which opens fine so long as I was already logged in), however as soon as I try to open a new application it hangs on load. Not even task manager will display. At this point the only option…

Language icon on taskbar
by Guest Asif Shah- 6 replies

Hello. I am using TS 2000 server. I have setup the regional settings to switch between English and Japanese. However, those settings dont show up for all users. Only I have the language icon on the taskbar. For other users, I have to go and add it manually for each user. I know in XP there is an option to make this change for all users. Does 2000 have the same option somewhere? Thanks.

New to Terminal Services - Where to Begin
by Guest powlaz- 4 replies

I could use a lot of direction with setting up a Windows 2003 Terminal Server. Can anyone point me to an online guide or recommended reading? We are a small company. We have a Windows 2003 domain but we don't use group policy. A lot of the blogs that I've found go into detail about setting up Group Policy after running the Terminal Services setup wizard. Do I need to have this? Is a second NIC required? I thought I read somewhere that one NIC should be connected to the network and the other should be directly connected to the Internet. We don't use roaming profiles. I don't really have a central location to put them. Will this hurt us? I hav…

Installing Print Drivers on TS, continued from 08-13-08
by Guest fox7- 3 replies

Thanks to all who commented on my previous post of 08-13-08. I had already read what Jeff Pitsch had suggested and followed that suggestion. Install the printer on TS and then delete the installed printer. That was a very simple procedure, I wonder why I could not find the install instructions anywhere on the many links I have bookmarked for my Terminal Server project. Jeff, thank you!! I have 3 printers working on the terminal server now. I do have a problem though, and wish for direction or suggestions. The first printer I tried to install was a HP 1300 and I was informed it was install on the client machine that was doing the RDC. When I …

Cannot Remote Desktop to home PC after installing XP SP3
by Guest Evan Kaye- 6 replies

I know Remote Desktop isn't strictly speaking "Terminal Services", but it seemed to be the closest match. After installing Windows XP Service Pack 3 on my home system, I cannot connect to it by Remote Desktop. The client seems to be trying to connect for a moment, and then automatically cancels less than a second later, with no error message (whereas I DO get an error if I try to connect to the wrong machine or port). I have tried connecting from outside my home network, from another PC on my network over the router's WAN interface, from the other PC directly to the local network address, and from the PC in question itself to the WAN interface (it won't l…

I have installed the printer on the TS (Win2k), but when he prints over a TS connection, I get the progress bar, but nothing prints out. Outlook 2003 Memory Usage
by Guest Chuels- 5 replies

Hello Community, this might be a known issue, but I couldn't find a cure for it. We have a so called "Desktop Environment" for a Community which does not run Windows. On of the certified Products is Outlook 2003 SP3 including the actual hotfixes. Monitoring the Servers over a longer period I noticed a very high amout of Memory used by Outlook 2003 which can be up to 150 MB (Private Bytes in ProcExpl). So is there a fix for that Syntom or is it a normal behaviour we will have to work with? (I know the article 827310) Thanks for your help and comments Carsten
