RDP Connections - Freeze or Reconnect
by Guest Sarah Kingswell- 13 replies

I am having a really frustrating issue with RDP connecting to a Windows 2003 SP2 Server. For several years the Terminal Server has been working well but just recently remote users have been complaining that the RDP session frequently lock up or reconnects with a big red x in the top right hand corner of the screen. It is happening so frequently that accessing the terminal server remotely is becoming unusable. I have seen this before and it happens very occassionally. LAN users access the terminal server with RDP without issue. This makes me believe it has something to do with the Router or ADSL Line. I have upgraded the router firmware to the lates…

Profile Issues

I am fairly new to profiles and have been reading a lot of information to educate myself. We run two terminal servers (Citrix Farm) on Windows Server 2003. UPHClean is installed. I've been seeing the following error: Event ID 1525: Windows has detected that Offline Caching is enabled on the Roaming Profile share - to avoid potential profile corruption, Offline Caching must be disabled on shares where roaming user profiles are stored. Our profiles are stored on our Fileserver. Everytime a user logs on, it also creates a local profile, which tends to take up a lot of disk space. In addition to the error 1525, I received the following: Windows w…

RemoteAPP sessions show disconnected on server but don't log off
by Guest Saucer Man- 13 replies

After we close down a RemoteAPP, we see that the user session is disconnected on the server in Terminal Services Manager. These sessions are not logging off on their own. We have to right-click the session and select log-off. How do we get the log-off to happen automatically when the user closes the RemoteAPP? -- Thanks!

I am still in the need for some assistance. I'd like to thank those who replied to my previous entry. Here is what I'm trying to do, what I've done so far, and some things that people have suggested. I am an Americorp Volunteer working on a technology infrastructure update for an Independent Living Center. This is my first experience using Server 2003 and Terminal Server. I have implemented the Terminal Server and all appears to be working as planned with the exception of the following. We have 4 Satellite offices; each one has their own Network Printer. (Same Brand, Brother 2070n) These printers are assigned a static IP address and are plugged directly …

Creating a custom Start Menu on Win2003 TS
by Guest Sandy Wood- 13 replies
I'm working through creating a custom Start Menu for my Win2003 TS users. I copied some shortcuts to a folder on the TS, on D:\custommenu. I'm looking to create a Group Policy to redirect the Start Menu folders. I've experimented with the various options in Folder Redirection and can't settle on what's suitable for my situation. All my TS users will be using local polices, no roaming. I'd like them to see my custom Start Menu and would like the policy not to apply to Domain Admins. I thought I could apply the Deny options for Admins in the Delegation tab of the policy so Admins would see the default menu. Does this look like it will work? -- Sandy Wood …

We are running 2003 server SP 2 with terminal services on a 4 processor server. We recently installed SP2 on a base 2003 standard server via windows update. Since the installation, we receive "warning" event 244 ("Failed to create a desktop due to desktop heap exhaustion") and all subsequent logons of remote desktops fail, with no further error messages. One or possibly two logons work, then the the warning message is issued, and further logons fail until the system is rebooted. Terminal server has 5 CALs, so this is not a licensing issue. I've attempted to install the dheapmon tool but it can't find the correct symbol table, even though I've downl…

All I want to do is set a group policy which allows members of an existing security group to log on via RDP without me having to make them members of the local "remote desktop users" group. The group policy "Allow log on through Terminal Services" " looks like it should do the job, but I have never managed to get it to work. can someone give me some pointers? regards roga

Hi All I'm running a Windows 2000 Server (DC) and a Windows 2003 Server that I installed 3 months ago and have just installed the terminal server on it 3 days ago, means we've never loged into this Terminal Server remotely. However, when we try to connect (local administrator / domain administrator / simple user ) we get the following error : "To log on to this remote computer, you must have Terminal Server User Access permissions on this computer. By default, members of the Remote Desktop Users group have these permissions. If you are no a member of the Remote Desktop Users group or another group that has these permissions, or if the Remote Desktop User group…

Windows TS 2008 + licensserver
by Guest HellslayeR- 13 replies

Hello. I'm experiencing a problem with windows 2008 terminal server and my windows 2008 licens server. The problem is quite simple: The license server dosent give licenses to my 2008 terminal servers but it will however give out licenses to windows 2003 servers. This leads me to belive that there's some setting I've overlooked at my license server or my 2008 terminal servers. My TS can discover the license server and bring up information about how many cals and so forth so they can see and bring up information from the licens server. Using group policy I've specified the license server to be used. On the license server itself I've added the ser…

TS User Profile Folders Not Being Created
by Guest S Sainsbury- 12 replies
I have a windows 2003 SP1 NAS Server. A TSProfile$ share was setup some months ago and permissions were set as per microsofts best practice. This has been working fine until today. Now when I create a new user and set the profile path, no folder is being created within the TSProfile$ share. I have gone over the permissions again and again but can see no issue. The users home drive is located on the same physical volume on a share called Home$ which has identical NTFS & SMB permissions and that works without issue. I have compared both shares again and again and see no differenace between the two. It only appears to be TSProfile that is affec…

Temp Licenses and User CAL Tokens
by Guest foolosofo- 12 replies
Hi! I've installed 10 TS User CAL Tokens in our customer's Windows 2003 Server. The server is using Temporary Licenses yet, and these licenses will espire on 20th of January. The 10 TS User CAL Tokens are installed but not issued, so they're ready to be used. However, they're not issued and I don't know if it will work fine on 20th of January. I want to check if they will work before the expiration date of temporary licenses. The TS Licenses looks like this: SERVER |--- Temp W2003 per device CALS - temp- "-" - 19 issued |--- Exisiting W2000 TS token CALs (per device) - built in - unlimited - 0 issued |--- W2003 - TS per User CAL Token - open - 1…

Single-application mode - Myth or reality?
by Guest dudeDad- 12 replies

I would like to create a GPO that says "TS_User1 will see a desktop icon only for Application X" and "TS_user2" will see a desktop icon for only Application Y" etc. Both users are loggin into the same terminal server. That one server has both applications installed. Is this possible? This MS document refers to "single application mode" (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/186572/ ) but I do not see any other references to it. Thanks Ken I am not talking about Remote App. I want people to access this functionality from RDC 6.0 without having to upgrade to 6.1. Basically I want people to click on a DirectX object on a webpage (using TS We…

Hi, We have a problem that when a user logs out from the terminal server the printers associated to their sessions don't delete. The only way we have discovered to remove the printer is to restart the printer spooler services on the TS. Any suggestions as to what is wrong or what can be done to fix? Thanks, Joe

server requirement
by Guest pete0085- 11 replies

Brief question about server requirement for a single terminal server. There would be a max of 12 users accessing the server at one time. With disk space not being an issue, what would be a recommendation for memory for such a server? Could it be an another application server or does it have to be a deditcated server? Can someone briefly explain why accessing resources through a terminal server doesn't take up as much bandwidth and is faster then accessing it over a Wan link?

I'm trying to connect to a windows 2003 sever which is on the local network, via Vista's remote desktop. I get the error message:- "The client could not connect. You are already connected to the console of this computer. A new console session cannot be established." I have no idea what this message means or how to fix it. A terminal session worked fine from XP before I upgraded to vista. A friend of mine with a very similar set-up, has exactly the same error when he tries to connect to his server also. Can any tell what I'm doing wrong? Chas

Log Off, Disconnect, but no Shutdown
by Guest JBradshaw- 11 replies

A previous admin created a GPO setting that removed the shutdown option from the start menu of machines in various OUs. I am trying to do some testing on a machine using RDP, and for some reason, it, also, does not have a shut down option on the start menu. I need to be able to shutdown via RDP. I have scoured our GPO looking for where I can add this option. I have move the machine to its own OU and verified that User Configuration / Administrative Templates / Start Menu and Taskbar does NOT have the "Remove and Prevent Shut Down" option enabled. I have also used gpedit on the local machine to set this option to Disabled. I have rebooted the machin…

Hi, We have 3 terminal servers running windows 2003 SP2 R2. One is working correctly. When the same user tries to access another server they get this error: "you must be granted the Allow logon through terminal services right. Members of the remote desktop users have this right." I don't know if it makes a difference but the one working server ix x64 and the other 2 aren't. I tried changing the group policy to allow logon through terminal services but this didn't help. Any other suggestions? Thanks
