Users cant access Share
by Guest John F Kappler- 2 replies

I'm not sure if this is a Terminal Server issue or an SBS issue but I'll start here.... We have a Terminal Server (2003) connected on to a Domain controlled by an SBServer 2003 R2. The SBServer has, on its C drive, a folder which is cleared for sharing by "Everyone" with Full Control. Users on their PCs can access this folder, open files, run programs, etc. On the Terminal Server, we can also do all these things if we log in as an Administrator, but if we log in as a Domain user, then we get an error message "Your current security settings do not allow this action" I've checked all the sharing settings on the folder, but given they can get there fro…

Creating a custom Start Menu on Win2003 TS
by Guest Sandy Wood- 13 replies
I'm working through creating a custom Start Menu for my Win2003 TS users. I copied some shortcuts to a folder on the TS, on D:\custommenu. I'm looking to create a Group Policy to redirect the Start Menu folders. I've experimented with the various options in Folder Redirection and can't settle on what's suitable for my situation. All my TS users will be using local polices, no roaming. I'd like them to see my custom Start Menu and would like the policy not to apply to Domain Admins. I thought I could apply the Deny options for Admins in the Delegation tab of the policy so Admins would see the default menu. Does this look like it will work? -- Sandy Wood …

IE7 and UNC Paths from the address bar
by Guest Larryw- 8 replies
I am having issues with several Windows Server 2003 servers running sp2. Currently we have IE7 installed on 3 test servers, and things appear ok when you RDP to the server or the console. The issue arrises when you use an RDP published app, or publish IE7 on citrix. It will launch seamlessly on the users desktop, and they can work like normal, except when they type in a UNC path in the address bar. now this can be, \\server\share or c:\ or d:\ or a mapped drive like n:\ or u:\. when they do this they get an error. Address Bar c:\(or what ever the path is) is currently unavailable. the odd thing is it pops the path you typed in, in a windows explorer win…

SP2 on Windows 2003 Terminal Server getting "Low on Registry Space
by Guest Dennis_S- 17 replies

After installing SP2 on Windows 2003 Terminal Server I came in the next morning and saw on the server "Windows - Low on Registry Space - The system has reached the maximum size allowed for the system part of the registry. Additional storage requests will be ignored." Users logging onto TS get "Windows was unable to load the profile but has logged on with the default profile system. Default - Insufficiant system resources exist to complete the requested service." It appears that up to six-eight users are able to log on before a user gets the Unable to load profile. Log a couple users off and another is able to log on. If reboot the server and it i…

Connecting to users desktop PC without losing IE 6 Trusted Sites
by Guest bstillion- 8 replies
Users logon to their PCs while at the office and their IE6 trusted sites are populated through a WINBATCH script. When the same user logs on from home to the TS/Citrix server and then RDP's to their desktop, all Trusted Sites get deleted. When the user returns to the office the next day, he must log on twice before his trusted sites are restored. Windows Server 2003 AD, no policies are applying any IE settings (confirmed by Microsoft Support.) including no "loopback" policy applied to the terminal servers. One of my steps to resolve was to apply a list of Trusted Sites to the default domain policy. My manager suggested moving it since that is not the b…

I have a terminal server setup and configured, when logged in as the administrator on the domain and trying to install software from a shared drive I get the following error " Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropiate permissions to access the item." Logged in as an administrator on the domain, permissions are perfect.

Remote Desktop vs Terminal Services
by Guest SuperGumby [SBS MVP]- 4 replies

H Guys, brand new install, Server 2003 (x32). SO OK, I put together this nice new Windows Server 2003 (x32), join it to the domain, and enable TS. I then connect to it remotely as Administrator, all's well. So let's take the KB/mouse off and run her headless, move her into the server room. Apps are installed as Admin, all is well. Go for it guys, use it. 'The policy of this system does not allow you to logon interactively', HUH? Even though Terminal Services is installed the server is acting like 'Remote Desktop', 2 sessions and Admins only. I've just been in (remote) and removed the tick from the TS win component, used Petri notes to enable R…

RDP sessions disconnected after server rejoins nlb cluster
by Guest AndiK- 5 replies
Each time a node joins (after reboot or new node) our nlb cluster, some (about 10 or twenty out of 200-300 in total) active rdp sessions to other cluster members are disconnected. The nlb cluster consists of 8 servers serving 300 rdp clients, most of them wyse thin clients. Balanced traffic is only TCP 3389. All servers are Windows Server 2003 Entrise Edition with SP2. Session redirection is achieved via windows session directory. Did anyone else notice this effect or is there a known solution? Best regards Andi

high cpu utilization of IE for one TS user
by Guest om- 2 replies
Hi, One of the terminal users is experiencing slowness with his IE. I ran Process Explorer on the terminal server and noticed that his IE instance did take more CPU resource than other TS users. I checked and they all seem to have the same IE settings. I deleted all IE temp. files as well as reduced the disk space size for the particular user but it didn't help either. Can you some suggest how i can identify the problem? Thanks

TS 2008 How to re-assign user license?
by Guest Ssupertech- 10 replies
I had a user that was connecting to TS 2008 using user mode licensing and now that user is no longer with the company. How do I free up his license for use by a new user? Also, how can I tell what users are taking licenses? The only report I can find shows how many licenses are in use and not who is using them. Thanks in advance, -Nathan

Hi, I'm testing with a ts 2008 server and remote app. A customer uses an online (internet) application (via local pc)in which he can select a ms-word document. If it is selected than the contents of the document must be displayed in the remote app ms-word application. Is this possible? I did read something about making this connection via a msi file but don't know if this is correct. Thx. Ramon

We have a program that uses the FlexLM key locks to prevent more than one person running the program. Even when you try to fire up a second instance of the program you are denied a license. Since only one instance on the computer can run at a time we have had this installed on the Terminal Server and not violated the license agreement because even when 10 people are using the TS for whatever, only one can use the program using the FlexLM key lock. I baggered out of a developer that they put in the restriction on the program (no details on how) but Sales and Management of the software company deny it is there because they know we and other customers will…

Terminal server 2000 and XP client licensing
by Guest takman_777- 7 replies

I have just taken over a 25 node network that is set up with Windows 2000 SBS, and Windows 2000 Terminal Server on 2 boxes. the main server runs the applications needed for the local group, and the Terminal server facilitates remote users who access the same program and data structure set up as a terminal service via vpn connections. they have a firewall set to administer dhcp address to the remote hosts. my question is this, i have noticed that the Terminal Server is set to run in Remote Administration mode, yet it was set up in Application Server mode almost 2 years ago when it was set up. my understanding is this... in RA mode, the server should not …

Is there a way to make the user's desktop read-only upon login? Is this even a good idea? I just hate when users start saving all their docs to the desktop...so I figure if they can't save to the desktop this will force them save to their my docs or public folder. - anthonyx26

virtual channel implementation
by Guest v.mont- 2 replies

I'm trying to implement a pair of components to handle communication over a virtual channel. I believe I have the client component done okay, and it sends a string on the virtual channel. On the server side, the second component is waiting for the read. But it never receives anything. All calls on both sides (open/write on client, and open on server side pass ok... ) So I have a few general questions, hopefully someone can help: 1. Is it okay to activate the server component manually (for test purposes)? It is currently implemented as a console app. 2. the client sends data right after VirtualChannelOpen returns okay. I do see the event coming back a…

Lexmark X5270 on 2003 TS
by Guest Gregg Hill- 7 replies
Hello! I called Lexmark and asked if the X5270 had terminal server compatible drivers for Windows Server 2003. I got a tech who seemed confused when I mentioned terminal server, but he did find a 2003 driver. When pressed to tell me if it was TS-compatible, he hesitated, asked someone else, and then said it was compatible. Due to the nature of the conversation and the hesitancy in his voice, I decided to ask here for real-world experience. So, does anyone know if the drivers for the Lexmark X5270 are really compatible with TS 2003, or perhaps which printer map I can use safely? Some Google searches have said to try an HP LaserJet 4 driver, but this …

What is locking ntuser.dat
by Guest HDI- 7 replies

Hi, Sometimes this file is used (locked) by an another process so when you log on you will get a temporary profile. On each instance where a temporary profile has been used, there are four successive USERENV errors: 1508 "Windows was unable to load the registry..." 1502 "Windows cannot load the locally stored profile..." 1515 "Windows has backed up the user's profile...." 1511 "Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile...." When I reboot the problem is solved but I hope there is another solution. Anyone? What is locking this file? When I see in open files under shared folders there is nothing. Can I look some…

Configure Clients
by Guest Jeff Pitsch- 1 reply

You need to make sure that the print drivers are fully tested and then installed on the terminal server. You can also use the GPO for enabling fallback drivers. The key is to make sure you have tested your print drivers because many (most) 3rd party print drivers are not compatible with terminal services. They will cause all sorts of issues from crashing the print spooler to bluescreening the server itself. Other than that, printing is enabled by default on the client and server. running programs on network drives
by Guest Rich Wethington- 11 replies

I recently replaced the server we use for terminal services. I have installed all of the programs that were on the old server on the new one. My problem is that any program that is actually on a network drive will not work. I get the following error. Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item. The programs work fine when run from the console, but not over terminal services. This server also has ISA 2000 running on it. The old one did also. Thanks, Rich Wethington
