Dear Newsgroup I cannot establish a remote desktop connection on my Windows XP Pro base unit (10.0.1.241) from my Windows XP laptop (10.0.1.242). Connection is an internal one only on 10.0.1.x subnet via router. Windows Firewall has been switched off, checked that port 3389 is listening with netstat -a, RD is swithced on, check that relevant services are running, even moved the RDP port from 3389 to 4489. Ran wireshark to monitor network activity and have noticed lots of TCP checksum error, first 4 packets are good, then errors as below Source Destination Proto Info 10.0.1.242 10.0.1.241 TCP warmspotMgmt > 4…

I am trying to lock down specific users (laptops) on TS 2003. 1. I am using GPM to do this, here is the setup: 2. Created an OU called School Laptops 3. Logged onto Terminal Server as Buster, but I could access the Control Panel. 8. Added Authen…

Print Spooler error
by Guest jcpierce- 4 replies
I am running Windows Server 2003 SP1. Once a week, the print spool stops working. If I restart it, the remote users get locked out of the system and they cannot log back in. My only option is to reboot the server. When I reboot the server service hungs on starting. I have tried all the options I could find in google (modifying the registry) and that still did not work. I usually have to stop and start the print spooler and the server server and reboot 2 -3 times before the server comes back online so users can log in. What else can I do? Has anyone else experienced this type of problem?

Session Timeout
by Guest JohnB- 3 replies

I think it's called "session timeout". It's where I get a login screen if the TS session isn't used for a certain amount of time. How do I control that? I've increased the time in the user's profile. I increased it in RDP properties in TS Configuration. The computers in this company are not joined to the domain, so I can't set it in a GPO. I've set it to 1 hour in the RDP properties. And it still goes back to the login screen after a couple minutes of idle. What am I doing wrong? TIA

Moving TS to new domain
by Guest Joe- 2 replies

I have a small Win2k3 TS server setup as a member of a Win2k3 domain. The existing domain controller will be decommissioned and a new DC, with a new domain name, will be installed. What is the best way to handle the migration of the TS to the new domain? Just removing it from the first domain and adding it to the new domain seems to simple. I'm worried about user profiles, etc. Can anyone advise on best practices? Thanks, Joe

I have installed QuickTime 7.4.5 on Terminal Server 2003. Ran it in install mode, chose not to auto update. However, as tested by a user, when they went to Apple.com they were presented with the decision to update. I'm looking for a way to avoid a user being able to select "update". Any advice is appreciated. Thank you. -- rmth

session id detection
by Guest Jim Reisz- 1 reply

I have a windows service that binds to a port on the server and I have several applications that will send messages for the service to process. Is there a way that the service can detect the terminal service session that is making the request without having to pass the session id in the request? I will need to modify the service to work in terminal services, but would like to avoid modifying 5 applications to pass the ts session id to the service. The reason that I need the session id of the caller is so the service may launch a process within their session. TIA

ts2003, users hung at black screen
by Guest anthony- 5 replies

i have a clean build 2003 standard server, with TS installed in application mode. Users have been complaining of getting logged or bumped off after 15 min or so. Some of them just have their screen go black and lose the entire desktop. If they close their remote window and re login the get back to the desktop their session is still alive with the applications running. It's like a screen saver kicks in and locks the TS session and the ony resoluton is to close the session window and reconnect every few minutes. They are very frustrated. They are all running windows xp pro through our sonicwall VPN tunnels. Ping statistics through the tunnel to the TS serve…
