TS NLB Port Rules
by Guest rmth- 2 replies
The recommendation for NLB port rules for TS is to delete the default and set the port range from 3389 to 3389 and specify TCP as the protocol. It states that this will only load balance connections made by RDP. Does the NLB port setting rules effect other port and protocol connections, such as external automated backup solutions? -- rmth

Add to Remote Desktop History count
by Guest Venger- 2 replies
Hello - Just a question someone may have the answer to. Is it possible to increase the connection history stored by the RDP client? I find with my usage that 10 is far too few, and I was hoping there was a DWORD entry that could be added to the registry to increase the MRU count. Of course, this is pretty esoteric, so not alot of info around on it, I've looked. Any insider info? Typing mail.clientslongassdomain.com takes just a few seconds, but if I can save that every time, maybe over my lifetime I will have saved enough of my time to cure childhood cancer or something. So please, think of the children... Venger

Can I force a remote session to logoff?
by Guest Mack Jones- 6 replies
We frequently have users from oversees logging into workstations here in the U.S. using RDP. Sometimes these sessions lock up and the user needs to be force off so they can be reconnected normally. Is there a way for me from a command prompt using admin rights to connect to the workstation and force it to logoff the user. Or is there any other way. I know that I can force the machine to shutdown and reboot but I don't want to do that if it's a workstation that has multiple users connecting to it. Rebooting would kick them all off. I just want to kick off the one. Any advice would be appreciated.

Release of old licenses in TS
by Guest Enfield- 3 replies
It looks like that there are several devices which show as expired with the old date and a new license has been re-issued to the same device, but the old one has not been refreshed or released for others to use. I checked couple of settings on License Manager to release it but was unsuccessful as there is no option to either right click on that device and say release or disconnect. Any ideas guys! Thanks in advance!

Server 2008 Terminal Services Logon options Help!
by Guest Larry- 2 replies
I have a web that directs users to a Windows Server 2008 Terminal Server. This web app supplies the login name. In Server 2003 there is no problem. But, now with Server 2008 when the Terminal Server Login dialog comes up I get a button for the user the web page has provided, a button for Other User and a Cancel button. How do I change this logon to display the Server 2003 type of dialog with user name, password and Ok and Cancel?

I am running a Terminal Services environment with a single server running Windows Server 2003 R2 When a user logs off from their terminal services session I see the same three warnings in the system tab of the event viewer for each printer they had in their terminal services session – a sample follows with the user’s name xxx’d out Event code 8 - Printer Samsung ML-2510 Series (from xxx) in session 1 was purged. Event code 4 - Printer Samsung ML-2510 Series (from xxx) in session 1 is pending deletion. Event code 3 - Printer Samsung ML-2510 Series (from xx) in session 1 was deleted. Install but not use TS License Server?
by Guest Hank Arnold (MVP)- 4 replies

I'm in the process of planning for a new Citrix PS 4.5 farm. New hardware and OS. Current farm is W2K TS. License server is one of the W2K DCs (domain is all W2K until next year). I want to set up the new license server on a W2003 R2 server I have running. However, I only have 50 TSCALs. Ultimately, there will be up to 100-125 workstations logging into the new farm. Can I set up the new license server without impacting the current setup? I can't have the workstations checking into the new server until I get the additional TSCALs.... -- Regards, Hank Arnold Microsoft MVP Windows Server - Directory Services

W2K3 R2, IE6SP2 - article 840378 describes the issue perfectly, except for the file dates & versions are newer than those listed for the hotfix. Basically, using roaming mandatory profiles with GPO to set the proxy settings and homepage URL - user logs off and three folders remian behind contaiing an index.dat file. Every time the user logs on a new profile folder is created - username.domainname.XXX. thanks.

Hi, I'm looking to set up terminal services for users and want to provide an automatic connection to the RDC desktop (after they have signed onto a thin client) with a selection of office apps (dependant upon which department they work on) and remove the shut down option. Does anyone know of a techincal document that describes this? Thanks Apollo

Hello All i am trying to set up a system for my terminal server, that would copy a file from a specific location as the user logs in, and then starts that file as the only application the user is allowed to run. here is the situation... i have an access application that we are running on a terminal server using a thin client setup. currently all users use the same access frontend located in a specific folder. this works, but makes updating that frontend a pain. i have to kick everyone out to do it. this application frontend should be copied to thier user account into thier terminal service profile. however with the amount of users doing this manuall…

Hello, I'm testing out windows server 2008. In 2003 - I get two remote sessions in addition to the user at the console/physical keyboard and video session. So I could effectively have 3 people all using the server simultaneously. With 2008, I seem to be able to have only 2 people on as administrator - one of them at the physical server keyboard and one remote or two remotes but no physical access. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks

[2003] Locking down desktop?
by Guest nospam@nospam.com- 4 replies
Hello I'm no Windows Server expect, and need to lock down the TS desktop users see when connecting. This is actually a server that prospects use to evaluate our application, and all users will use the same login/password. Basically, I'd like to only have a single icon on the desktop to launch our app, and a single item in the Start menu that says "Disconnect", to make sure users really close the session so that the next user doesn't see a running session. In addition, I'd like to run a batch file after a user has logged out, so as to put pristine data back, in case the previous user has left some identifying information. According to Google, it looks …

I am very new to terminal server. Is it possible to set up a Windows 2003 server with terminal services so that different users get different desktops / programs available? For instance, I'd like to set it up so that my accounting staff members can access our accounting software, and that my hr staff members can access our hr software, but accounting staff can't get hr software, etc. Thanks.

But I can find no similar documentation for how Resource Authorization Policies. Is it even possible to reference RAPs on the NPS? Are there best practices regarding maintaining TS Gateway configurations? --Geoff

Renew or Extend TS Trial
by Guest shepcon- 1 reply
I'm running terminal services in application mode using the 90-day trial license. The server is a Dell server and the Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard x64 Edition did come pre-installed, so it is licensed. I setup TS licensing on this server and simply used the 90-day trial, which expires in 2 days. I recall reading that it's possible to extend the 90-day trial with Microsoft, but I cannot seem to locate any information on the procedure. We're debating going to the 2008 versions, so I'd prefer to not purchase the TS CALs until we've decided for sure. Thanks for any suggestions. Ken

Outlook 2000 hanging on closing within Terminal Services
by Guest Gerald Oakham- 1 reply

HI, I'm new to Terminal Services on a Windows 2003, so please bear with me. I have users that save emails as .MSG files so they can attach them to customer program package. Clicking on the Link opens up Outlook 2000, eventually, but when the message has been read, we get the "Please wait while Outlook exits" message.....and it hangs there. Terminal services can still be used, but Outlook perminatly tries to shutdown, and the only way to kill it off is to log out of TS ( as Task manager has been disabled for all users except Administrators ). Perfoming that task while logged in as an administrator causes no problems, so I belive it might be a permission…

Using credentials for rdp connection with XP Embedded
by Guest Brad- 1 reply
Hopefully this is an easy question. We have new thin clients with XP Embedded. We have one rdp connection for the users on the desktop. Everytime they click on this, it prompts for credentials for the server that the rdp is connecting to. I know with our older thin clients (CE), there was a connection manager to mange these connections and credentials. With the RDP options, I do not see this now. Thanks for the information.
