Windows 2003 Terminal Server printing question...

Hi, I'm having difficulty with an HP Laserjet 2300 that is set up on a remote network. I've got the rdp client to redirect printer output to their local printer. I've also created the printer locally on the terminal server (and used lpt1). (Can't print to it like this). My understanding was that the local default printer would show up and automatically be created for the terminal server session. I've got it working for other HP printers on our sub-networks, but can't figure out what i'm doing wrong now. Any suggestions? Thanks, JG

Multiple User Sessions
by Guest rmth- 8 replies

Does anyone have experience with opening several dozen sessions under the same user account? I do not have a test network, for use, to observe if there will be any sort of degradation, or other problem. I work in an educational environment. Each classroom has one user login name. There will be approximately 30 terminals in a classroom. Thanks. -- rmth

Using the Clipboard with RDP sessions
by Guest compsosinc@gmail.com- 3 replies

We connect to a Windows 2003 Terminal Server with XP Pro clients using Remote Desktop 6.0. We would like to capture a screen on the client when it is in a session and either save it as a .bmp file or paste it into a Word document. So, when we hit "Print Screen" whil in a session, where does that information go? We thought it went to the clipboard on the TS, but if it is supposed to, how do we Paste it from the clipboard? Note that our TS users have been restricted to not using any standard Windows programs on the TS, so we cannot open PAINT or WORDPAD on the TS from a client session. Thanks!

Lock down & selcting printers
by Guest Park2- 1 reply

I need to know how to create a user group that would only allow the client to do the following: 1. Lockdown applications only run Outlook prog1.exe prog2.exe Firefox.exe 2. Mycomputer ( only view a certain mapped drive / folder eg P:\data) 3. We also have several printers shared on SRV1. Is there a batch utlity that would automatically add three of the printers to that group. This is so we do not have to setup printers everytime we add a new user. CHeers Stevew

TS Temporary Licenses
by Guest Mark- 1 reply
I have a Windows Server 2003 Terminal Server with 20 per-user terminal server client licenses. When someone creates a terminal server session they are getting issued a "Temporary" license, now one of the 20 purchased licenses. We are getting to the point where their temp licenses are going to expire. How do I resolve this so they get issued a per-user CAL? Thanks.

W2008 Final: Is per user CAL allocation enforced or not?
by Guest Gross, Michael- 1 reply

Hi, as to the article http://www.msterminalservices.org/articles/Changes-Windows-Server-2008-Terminal-Server-Licensing-Part1.html Windows 2008 RC0 still didn't enforce per user CAL allocation. However, it's not clear whether or not it's enforced in the final version. Does anybody know what the final does and probably bring a little light into the darkness? Thanks, Michael

32 vs 64
by Guest John Holt- 1 reply

Hello all, Quick question. Just currious at this point. We publics a desktop with 2 32bit apps only. With Windows Server 2003 Standard 32bit and 4gb or ram we can usually get 40-50 users at a time with no problem. Would there be any problems doing the same thing with Windows Server 2003 Standard 64bit??? Does each TS session run with it's own block of memory so the 32bit apps don't lose track of their own data once the user load goes beyond the 4gb??? Would be nice to eliminate a TS server or 2. :) Thoughts? John

We have Office 2003 Standard (SP3) locally installed on our Windows Server 2003 Terminal Servers (SP2). When configuring sound notification in Outlook 2003 and via control panel/sounds, it doesn't work, when a new mail arrives. If i use Outlook express with the same settings in control panel/sounds, the configured soundfile (notification.wav) is played when a new mail arrives. Any hints for me? Regards Andi

Idle Question

Hi all If you set and Idle limit for a user and then tell it to "End Session" will it send WM_CLOSE messages to the open apps or does it just 'kill' them ? ie if a user started an intensive process and then walked away for a coffee would it get killed with the timeout was reached or would it close graciously ? Thanks Andrew

Terminal Services Server - send/receive Msgs...
by Guest Callileah- 4 replies

June 18, 2008 Hi everyone, I'm running Terminal Services on a Win Server 2003 box. I know as the Admin that I can use the "Terminal Services Manager" console to send messages to any active User who is logged on. I had thought, when I initially tested this functionality, that the User(s) would be able to respond to the messages I sent them. However, they can not. I did check in the "Help Topics/Index" in Terminal Services and it does say that Users, not to be confused with Admins, can in fact send/receive messages to/from other Users. But it does NOT say HOW. Does anyone know how my TS Users can do messaging?? -- Thanks, Ca…

TS 2003 Loosing Connections
by Guest Brian McGrew- 3 replies

OK, I'll be the first to admit I'm not sure this is the right group to put this in and I'm not the worlds foremost Windows expert! I've got a Win2K3 Enterprise (32-Bit) running on a Dell 1400SC server that is a terminal server with 10 licenses in it. Installed is MS Office, FileMaker Pro and a few other very lightweight applications. On another machine I have Win2K3 Enterprise (32-Bit) running a Dell 850 that services RRAS. I just migrated all the RRAS services to this machine about 3 weeks ago because my previous RRAS/VPN server blew up. My clients are loosing connections to the terminal server at random intervals. AFAIK only the RRAS/VPN settings have …

will 2003 TS Servers work with 2008 CALs?
by Guest uber- 1 reply
I just upgraded my TS Lic server to 2008, and have 150x 2003 TS CALs installed on it and issuing the 2003 CALs to my existing TS Farm (all 2003R2). I have a new 2008 TS Server online that sees the server but does not see any 2008 CALs, because they are only 2003. I do have SA so I should be able to upgrade the CALs to 2008, correct? But, I will need to keep my 2003R2 TS servers for some time, so will the 2008 CALs work for the 2003 farm? Thanks

logonserver in profile path
by Guest John Holt- 2 replies

I have 2 Windows Server 2008 DCs. I have always had %logonserver%\sysvol\profiles\<companyname>\<usersname> for profile path in the Terminal Server tab of the user properties. One DC dies, users can still logon with their profile. With my old Windows 2003 servers this has worked well for years. BUT! With the Windows 2008 servers, it just doesn't seem to like the %logonserver% variable. I have tried every variation I can think of but it always comes up with Profile not loaded and logs on with the temp profile. If I replace %logonserver% with either of my DC names (\\<servername>), everything works great. Even tried setting up a c…

Multiple session for same user/printer
by Guest Marko- 4 replies

Hello Recently a lot of problems occured at our customer. They have Windows Server 2003 SP2. Clients connects to server through terminal sevices(about 10 users) from different locations. All the users have different printers. Everything work fine for last two years. Now problem appears. If the client loggs of from terminal server, the printer session for this user is still "opened". Next time the same user log on to server, the server creates new session but printing does not work anymore because the previous session is still opened. So the same user can have more printer sessions for same printer. How can I fix this problem? Marko Brancelj

by Guest JohnHenrysHammer- 0 replies

Hi there Have deployed Windows Server 2008 Terminal Services on a test server, wanted to look at TS RemoteApps and TS Web Access. Installed these server roles, and also TS Gateway, and what fantastic products they are. However, cannot get TS Gateway to accept a SSL certificate, even a self-signed one created from within the TS Gateway management console itself. What happens then is from an external location with no connection at all to the internal LAN, I can enter https://TSapps.domain.com/ts into IE (XP SP3), I am then prompted to enter my domain credentials, then I am granted access to the TS Web Access page, where I have published various basic MS apps…
