How to restart terminal services on 2003 sp2 server?
by Guest Rocko Saw- 2 replies
after one of the MS security patchs cycles, the ability to stop or restart the terminal servcies has been 'blocked' or prevented. we tired using, pstools, hyena, net stop, mmc /a, etc and even logged on as local admin but the only way now to restart that service is to reboot the whole server. I'm guessing its got to do with some registery entry the prevents manual restart of the termservices service. I also been looking in GPO but can't find any entries that locks these services down. this is the RDP admin console using termservices. any ideas on how to un-lock this setting to allow remote restart of these services?

Removing Outlook Express from Start Menu
by Guest Chris- 7 replies

I am trying to configure my Terminal Server so that Outlook Express does not appear on the start menu for any new user profiles. I have read and tried several things and have not been successful (logged in with a user after each step, verified the OE icons are sill present, deleted the profile, then tried again after another change): I removed the stubpath entry from HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}. I restored the above key and changed it to be HideStubPath. I tried removing the hide flag for OE in the sysoc.inf file and removing Outlook Express (from start menu) through add/remove wind…

TS clients not showing in LS list
by Guest Apollo- 1 reply

HI, I have 2 terminal servers both pointing to an application server holding the Terminal Licencing role. When both T1 & T2 were originally set up they were both pointed to the appliaction server to seek licences. However, I notice when I look at the application server | Terminal Licencing, that none of the clients have 'grabbed' a licence (per user user licencing mode is active) despite approx 5 users (phased deployment of TS to client, so early days at the moment) having successfully RDP to the server and subsequently logged off. What is going on? Should I be worried that 120 days later everything will stop? Thanks Apollo

Default permissions on auto-created printers
by Guest ks3- 1 reply

On one of our terminal servers, the default permissions on auto-created printers seem off. There is an unknown account in the list. Also, we need to grant the user full control of their printers (some of them need deleted from the TS via a logon script). Where can these permissions be changed?

I have a TS that users access to run two applications. I force-run these at TS logon, which means that each user actually has two separate ID's (please don't get distracted from answering my question by telling me I should just let them run one desktop without force-running the apps - we have our reasons). This means that the users need to store two separate sets of TS/RDP credentials - one for each user; one with each RDP session. (Also, please do not get distracted from my question by telling me not to store credentials. Suffice it to say that I have my reasons, and the stations where the credentials are saved are secure to my satisfaction.) However, …

by Guest NET_ADMIN_IT_GURU- 5 replies

We have clients who have connected via dial up from offsite fine to a Win2K server running Terminal Services, then thru VPN to our network. We now have installed a Win2003 Server running Terminal Services with 4 CALs for clients to connect, set up as per Session - not per Device. When the client dials into the Win2003 server it connects dial up fine. When it tries to connect then thru VPN, it recieves "Network Protocol Connections Error 736 TCP/IP CP error". The clients were able to connect fine before on the Win2K Server, and now they are having problems connecting on Win2003 Server. I have checked every settting that I know and am stumped! AN…

Strange JavaScript error on Terminal server
by Guest Roget Luo- 3 replies
We have 3 Windows 2003 Std terminal servers and for whatever reason, one of them is getting a javascript error pop up whenever users go to a website. The error is very non-descriptive, all it would say is: Java Script error Description: unspecified error Source: http://www.websitename.com line 2 And it would only give an OK button, however, when user clicks on it, it just returns back to the error pop up. Only way to get out of it is Task manager and end task. Looked in Event view, couldn't find anything, uninstall Java and reinstall, program still persists. The site works just fine on the other 2 Terminal servers we have in our network so I woul…

RDP Connection Color Depth
by Guest Christian- 1 reply
I am trying to connect to several clients in diferent environement with a resolution of 2560 * 1600 and a color depth of 16 bit. For the almost all servers everything works fine but there are a some server that will not allow a higher color depth then 8 bit which is giving me some problems with the software I am using remotely. The servers have no special setup but they are all in the same environment. The Graphic Card should be able to do it. There is no Terminal Server Config that limits the color depth. If I connect with a smaller resolution the connection uses 16 bit color depth. Is there a kind of check up on the line speed while connecting rdp…

There is no "Deny Log on through Terminal services" policy
by Guest Steve- 1 reply

I have a Windows 2000 server with Service Pack 4 that does not have the "Deny Log on through Terminal services" policy within gpedit. I need to add a user to this policy to deny RDP access. I have tried to use Active Directory to enable this policy, but it isn't working. I am assuming it is because the server doesnt have the option itself. Any ideas?

WTS Multiple Sessions Created
by Guest Jay Fink- 1 reply

Hey folks... I have a Windows 2003 terminal server w/ service pack 1. Users will connect to the server and later disconnect. When they attempt to reconnect later, a new session is created for that user. It becomes an issue over time as dozens of sessions (and all their processes) will exist for each user of the system. Yes, terminal services is configured to 'Restrict each user to one session'. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thx for your time.

Hello i have a question about how terminal server works in regards to a situation that we are currently using here in my work place. we have an access database system with a data backend, i will call it service db from now on, and a frontend file, called client db, on the terminal server. we use hamachi to create networks for each representative we have in other countries. then the reps use remote desktop over those hamachi networks. this system works really well. further, each user is limited to using only the frontend file to connect to the service db and view and enter data. the question is this, does each user need thier own front end file? …

TS Client ramping CPU and leaking memory badly
by Guest Dan Forest- 2 replies

I recently started having a problem with mstsc.exe taking the CPU up to 60-70% and leaking steadily (watched it go to 500 MB+ before stopping). This is with a single remote desktop session active. Initially all looks OK, but after some time the leak begins and doesn't stop. Closing the remote session does not kill the app or release any memory. I recently installed some MS security updates and that seems to coincide with the problem, however I haven't been able to find anything on the web linking the updates to this problem. The updates applied were: KB945553 KB941693 KB948590 KB948881 In addition, I tried uprading to terminal services client v6, b…

I have Outlook 2007 and IE7 running on a W2K3 terminal server (in execute mode). Here is the specific problem I have: there is a link to a website that requires a login in the e-mail. I click on the link in the e-mail and I am taken to the correct site and prompted for log in. After logging in, I am redirected to the content referenced from the link in the e-mail. In the same message, I click on another link that should take me to different content on the same site, opened in a new tab. However, a new iexplore process is started and I am once again prompted to log in. After logging in again I am redirected to the correct content. How can I keep fro…

Wallpaper Group Policy not being applied on Windows 2003 x64 TS
by Guest Richmond- 0 replies

We have several terminal servers all in the same domain and OU. We use the group policy setting "User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Desktop > Active Desktop > Active Desktop Wallpaper" to set the wallpaper (company logo) for all users. This works fine on all our terminal servers except one which is a Windows 2003 R2 SP2 x64 St (our only 64 bit terminal server). Has anyone seen this problem on 64-bit terminal servers or is there a particular setting that needs to be applied to x64 Windows servers?
