GPO Question about Disconnects
by Guest Jason- 1 reply

Hello, I am having an issue with old profiles being left on the Terminal Servers. I have enabled, "Delete cached copies of roaming profiles" on all servers. This policy works great except for when users disconnect from there sessions. As a result, I have a ton of profiles that I have to run utilities to cleanup. Current Sessions Policies enabled: Set Time Limit for disconnected sessions Sets a time limit for active but idle Terminal Services sessions I wanted to know if anyone ever used the policy, "Terminate sessions when the time limits are reached". This policy will log users off gracefully instead of hard resets. The only thing that concerns …

Default printer in term session keeps changing
by Guest pearce- 1 reply

I'm working with users who login to a 2003 TS and connect their local printers and see printers from the server. When they login their local default is mapped as default in their session. When another user logs in at a different office the default printer for the first user will change. They are in the habit of resetting their default over and over again, but I'm hoping we can do better than that. I'm told this is a known issue, but I'm looking for a straightforward way around this. -- Pearce Owen Remote Support Engineer Innovation Networks http://www.innovationnetworks.com

Update on serial port redirection and advice needed
by Guest Brad- 7 replies

About a month ago, I posted about having serial port redirection issues. Vera directed me to a KB article where I had to get Microsoft support to provide a hotfix on the Terminal Server. This was done and this is where the project stands: The program does work on a thin client that has Windows XP Embedded, however it still does not work on another thin client that has Windows CE 4.2. The case with Microsoft has not been closed yet and still is a open issue (the Microsoft support is well worth the cost). They have referred me to KB #887695 where I contacted HP and they walked me through the steps of upgrading to the current CE version. So I know t…

Office 2003 on Windows 2003 Terminal Server
by Guest JF- 0 replies

Hello- I installed MS Office 2003 on 4 term. servers as directed by documentation found on MS's web site. 3 of the installations are correct, in that they do not display the full color splash screen when launching an office application. However, one server shows the full color splash screen. I believe this somehow came back when using the Save My Settings wizard to restore our company customizations for Office. Is this a problem to have the full color splash screen, and if so, is there a way to revert it back to the way it should display in TS? Thanks, Joel

logon window - domain field showing local machine
by Guest Jammer- 2 replies

hey everyone, ok so i have a farm of multiple terminal servers (runinng citrix ps4.5 as well) it seems that one of the servers and only the one - whenever you get the logon screen to that server, instead of displaying the domain name for our organization it shows the local machine, the username and password are blank as they should be, but the domain field keeps defaulting to the local machine, and im pulling what is my quickly dissapearing hair out. there arent any issues, you can hit the drop down and choose the domain, and off you go without issue, but this is just more of an annoyance than anything else thanks guys!

Any advice for using XML FORMAT for this? Rgds, HuaMin

Netgear ADSL router causing TS problem
by Guest Bobby- 2 replies

Hi, We use TS with Windows 2003. I've had problems over the past few weeks with TS connections from home being dropped, and no more than 1 person being allowed on at any one time. Yesterday everything was fine, but then we had a problem and nobody could get on. Today I simply reset our Netgear ADSL router, and TS worked again fine. I've suspected that the problem might be this router for some time. Can anybody give me any clues as to why this might be? Could there be a setting on the router which only allows one user onto TS at any one time. Thanks for any help Colin

Why can we only ever get one user logged on via TS
by Guest Bobby- 3 replies
Hi We have four servers running Windows 2003, with about 50 user licenses. One of the servers is exclusively a TS server. We do not use TS through VPN (yet!). We use a Sonicwall TZ190 firewall. Can anybody explain to me why we can never get more than one, possibly two users logged on remotely at the same time with TS? I thought we should be able to get all 50 users on if necessary, though in reality we only need about 10. It's so frustrating - it's always our MD who can't get on due to some sales guy being on all evening. Is it just a setting on the firewall, or is it a TS setting? Thanks for any help Colin

session printers
by Guest yair- 5 replies

Hi, I've recently managed to finally update my 2K3 server from SP1 to SP2. Ever since, the server, which functions as a terminal server doesn't allow users to print to a mapped printer, and registers an error (event ID 6161 - Win32 error code returned by the print processor: 3. The system cannot find the path specified). The server prints to all other printers, both local and remote (as long as they are not in a specific session) Naturally, I went through all possible posts but none seem to address this specific problem. Tried cleanspl.exe and all other remedies including checking the registry, backing up the other server's spooler and restoring it t…

Recommendations for TS help
by Guest Bobby- 3 replies
Hi, I'm having big difficulties with Terminal services. I'm not really sure who to turn to at the moment. Most of my problems are probably very basic, but I have very limited knowledge of TS. Can anybody recommend a good place to talk to about this? Is there a contact at Microsoft, or is there anybody else? The trouble is, our TS server was installed by an external company who are no longer with us, so I can't speak to them. I'm really at the limit of my knowledge with TS. It's so intermitant , sometimes people can get on, sometimes they can't. We can never get more than one person on at a time. Is it to do with licensing, or do we have a problem with the…

2003 Enterprise R2 SP2 so slow that it is unusable.
by Guest Dan- 3 replies

I have installed 2003 Ent R2 SP2 on one of our BL460c with dual quads and 16GB of RAM. It takes for ever for a user to log in and then when they do get it the system is so slow it is unusable and this is with only one user on it. We have a farm with 4 other terminal servers and they are all fine. Only difference with this one is the others where installed using SP1 media the SP2 installed after and the other are running off of DL380 servers. I have also reinstalled the OS and every app to be the exact same as the other servers and no difference. I am our of ideas. Seems to me to be something with maybe roaming profiles or folder redirection that we u…

Same problem..
by Guest Evan .- 1 reply

Same problem over this way. Windows 2k3 Enterprise SP2. Random "grey screening"... have done more logging/troubleshooting than I care to recount... userenv.dll logging, you name it. Monitoring after the server starts "grey screening" new sessions shows that the logon process "completes" and the applications (explorer, iexplore, "published/startup" apps, etc.) startup, but the session won't show it until 15-30 minutes later, and even then, performance is sub-par. This has left me scratching my head for months... as it happens on both physical and virtual terminal servers we have, we've built new ones from scratch and it happens on those too...

Disable Multiple Remote Desktop Sessions
by Guest Frequency1- 1 reply
I want to know how to go in the registry or terminal services management on my Windows 2003 server machine and disable multiple remote desktop sessions. I hate remoting in from one place and not getting my locally logged in desktop session, it generates a new session and lets you have multiple simultaneous different remote sessions open. I know this is a "feature" for some but it annoys me because I leave applications running locally and then remote in and cannot get to the already open documents etc. Any help would be appreciated, thanks! 2008TS in 2003 Domain - Licensing Question
by Guest Stephen Russell- 1 reply
Hi All, I have searched through recent post here but still unclear in my position of what to do. I have a Win2k3 domain which has a win2k3 member server that is our TS. The licenses are stored on another server (our DC). I am playing with Win2008 and have added this server to our domain (as a member server). I wanted to test out the nifty features of the new TS stuff in 2008 but it is not letting me use the licenses from our licensing server. From what I have read this natural as it needs to have 2008 CAL's. BUT, is there anyway I can test out TS2008 with out having to upgrade the licenses? This is only a test server and I don't want to stuff u…

W2008 Published apps
by Guest LucianG- 2 replies

I am evaluating W2k8 TS and I have 2 questions: 1. In a W2k8 TS with published applications (no RDP visible) is there a way to deny users to use RDC (mstsc.exe) to connect to a desktop session but allow them to use published applications? 2. Are W2008 TS per user licenses unmanaged as it is in W2003? Thank you

2k8 folder redirection w/ read only profile not following new chan
by Guest Gabrielm- 0 replies

Currently, I have a group of 2k3 TS servers loading locked down, read only desktops via folder redirection of the desktop and start menu via GPOs. In the process of testing a 2k8 TS, I have stumbled onto an issue where after the user initially logs into the 2k8 TS and successfully gets their respective restricted desktop, any changes to the folder redirection locations in the GPO will fail with the following error. “The following error occurred: Folder cannot move because there is non redirectable folder at the same path. Error details: Access is denied.” And the user will retain the original folder redirection setting in the old GPO. The same user on the…
