What about X509 certificate logon to TS
by Guest Rich Raffenetti- 2 replies
It would be really great if a holder of an X509 certificate could use it to login to a terminal server instead of typing username/password credentials. Does anyone foresee that happening? The X509 certificate on a smart card may be used - so basically the system already understands certs.

MS Access multiuser database
by Guest Brent- 1 reply

Is it necessary for each TS user to have their own copy of the front end of a split, multiuser database? Currently each TS user has a short cut the same front end .mde and each opens their own 'instance' of that file when they log into Access. For the most part it works well for users and I like the convenience of just having to replace one file when updates are rolled out. The reason I ask is that occasionally an on-open update procedure fails with error 3009 - a certain table can't be locked because it is already open or in use. Users should not be opening this table directly but lots of forms and queries use it. Thanks for your thoughts. B…

Performance degredation following Office 2007 SP1 install on 2003
by Guest lamaslany- 0 replies

When SP1 for Office 2007 was released we installed it on our Windows Server 2003 x64 terminal servers in the hope it would fix some of the issues we'd been experiencing with Office Communicator 2007. Unfortunately this rendered our terminal servers unusable and we had to nuke and rebuild to get going again. The problem seemed to affect Outlook users with the performance degrading to a point where it would take a user more than five minutes to open an email. Annoyingly though this did not seem to affect the first dozen or so users that connected to the servers - only those that connected past that (approximate) limit. The more users that connected the…

Windows 2008 - remap system drive letter
by Guest lamaslany- 0 replies
We have a third-party LOB application that needs each user to have their own C: drive. Personally I think this is rather poor and have repeatedly requested that they sort their code out but it is falling on deaf ears. With Windows Server 2003 remapping the system drive from C: to D: was easily achieved - a registry tweak and a reboot. Unfortunately this no longer works for Windows Server 2008. The server will boot but I am unable to log on as a user. Does anyone know how I can install to a drive letter other than C: or change the drive letter once the installation is complete? Windows Server 2008 offers too many benefits to ignore but if it doesn…

Hi Support I am running a TS Web Access with TS Gateway as a front-end for my back-end Windows Server 2008 terminal servers. It works fine from the TS servers itself but when i make a connection to the webinterface from a XP SP2 client or a Vista RTM i get the following error: ActiveX control not installed or not enabled The Terminal Services ActiveX Client control is not available. Before you can access remote programs and connect to remote desktops through TS Web Access, you must install and enable this ActiveX control. The ActiveX popups and i install the component but stille get this error. The site is trusted in IE. I cannot use a solution w…

Hi, On of our TS2003 Terminal Servers shows the following issues once every 10-15 days or so: - Some users cannot login as soon as they enter their credentials - Some users who manage to login cannot use their Startmenu which is empty. The Startmenu is redirected from a network share. - Currently logged in users cannot access network shares on other servers. - Mapped drives are disconnected. - Outlook connections to Exchange servers are disconnected. Our only solution sofar has been to reboot the server. The eventlog shows the following events: ----------------------- Event Type: Error Event Source: Userenv Event ID: 1055 User: <username>…

Client printing problems
by Guest Brad- 3 replies

I have started a new job in an industrial plant that uses many thin clients throughout the plant. I am failry new to Terminal Services and thin cliens. These thin clients have an auto logon and run a certain program depending on what line the client is installed. One of the lines is required to print a label along with a barcode. There are two lines like this, each with their own terminal thin client. The one that I am having a problem with displays a Printer 482 error. In doing some research, this means that it cannot find a printer installed. We are using Zebra label printers that are not network printers, but installed directly on the LPT1 port…

Remote desktop

Just a quick question about remote desktop. I am setting up some machines for remote desktop use and they are appearing in the list in remote web workplace. I am also able to succesfully connect to the machines. So far so good. When I am connected using a login 'user1' I can work on the machine without a problem. However, if another user tries and connects to the machine as well while user 1 is still connected user2 get a warning saying that user1 is still connected do I wish to log them off and any unsaved work will be lost. This is fine, however I was wondering if there was a switch or a setting somewhere where I can set it so that it is impossible …

Cannot anymore connect on TS 2003 from remote office
by Guest OxygeN- 0 replies

Hello there. It'll be a slightly long description, but it is a complicated issue and I don't know how to solve it. Let's start... Got a Windows 2003 Server (SP2 and almost the latest updates installed) which is being used as a Terminal Server. I got a bunch of 20 clients in LAN connecting without any troubles (Win95 clients). Same sort of clients (Win95 with RDP client) are being used in a remote office on a different subnet (Class C). All has been working fine since someday in the morning the users started their clients and got no connection to the Terminal Server. I checked today with some GUI netstat and I could see that the connection *is being c…

by Guest Yuri GMT+1- 1 reply

Hi, I have a terminal server (w2k3) and exchange server 2003. I want to use outlook 2003 to connect to the exchange server. When I try to make a new e-mail account via the Outlook client on the Terminal Server the system tells that I have to create new MS Echange-accounts via E-mail in control panel. This works for me since Iām an administrator. How can I do this for my users? (my users do not have access to control panel). Thanks in advance, Yuri

KB944984 Hotfix -- any experiences????
by Guest Eric32- 0 replies

We're having an issue with one of our terminal servers where some users are having problems logging in -- the infamous profile problem. I rec'd the hotfix described in KB944984 from Microsoft but before applying it I was hoping to get some feedback from anyone that may have applied this hotfix before? Unfortunately we don't have a test server setup to try this out on. I just hate reading the warning that the hotfix hasn't been thoroughly tested. Thanks!

Hello All . I have been troubleshooting a very wierd and troublesome problem for a client. We are running 2003 std server with terminal services - all updates run. We have on top Office 2003 which is shared between all the TS clients. We have many network based printer, connecting different ways, but over the past 3 months a wierd problem has come up. when any user tried to print from word (as in file print) the print dialogue box can take up to 5 mins to come up. If they just click print (to default printer) its ok. The same happens in Powerpoint, but not as long. Excel does not show this problem at all - the print dialogue box comes up straight away…

Low on system resource in terminal session
by Guest Wim van de Kruijs- 2 replies

We have a Windows 2003 Terminal server (attached to SBS2003 server). On it there are 15 to 20 clients. The server was initially installed with Server 2003 standard and Office 2000. The server has Dual Xeon 2,8 Ghz, 4 Gbyte ram and 72 Gbyte HD Raid-1. All the users are working on this terminal server, they have Windows 98 clients and there are 4 laptops with Windows XP. Everything worked fine until I updated the server to SP2 and all the security updates. I also upgraded Office 2000 to Office 2007 Standard. Also Office 2007 is updated with the available updates from about 3 weeks ago. The problem is now that some terminal sessions 'crashes'. Sometimes the u…

RDP sessions unresponsive and Task manager "hangs"
by Guest AndiK- 1 reply

We have 5 Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition Terminal Servers in a wlbs cluster with clustered session directory serving about 250 users, most of them with thin clients. Starting about 3 weeks ago, our users experience sporadicly unresponsive sessions. These states can last up to 5 or 6 minutes. If users disconnect and then reconnect to their session, the problem doesn't remain. In addition, we can see that on the servers (in console and TS sessions) taskmanager misbehaves like that: It takes up to 10 or 15 seconds to show up and lot of more seconds to show anything more than a grey screen. Servers are not "overloaded", processor and ram usage…

We recently upgraded to Terminal Services 2008 (from TS 2003) and have a Win 2003 Active Directory Server. We noticed that the users of our application now have the ability to browse our network (sound the alarm!!). The group policy for our TS users restricted the users from browsing the network (through an application common Dialog) in TS 2003 but this setting does not seem to be recognized by our Win 2008 TS servers. Is this a bug or have a overlooked a new setting required for TS 2008?

Outlook & RPC over HTTP within TS
by Guest Lanwench [MVP - Exchange]- 4 replies

Hi, everybody..... I know you can't use Outlook in cached mode on TS, but I've got a client whose Exchange server is hosted by their parent company (accessible via RPC/HTTP and OWA only, and I'm installing W2003 TS for their remote/branch office users. Within the TS session the users will definitely need mail access for integration with their document management s/w, but if I'm not mistaken, there's nothing besides OWA they can use, right? Just hoping (rather vainly) that someone's figured out a fancy way to make RPC over HTTP/Outlook Anywhere an option via TS. (& no, IMAP/POP3/whatnot are not options...even if the parent company opened this …

W2003 TS via SonicWALL SSL VPN - third party "printer redirection helper" options? Hi - I've got a SonicWALL SSLVPN 2000 appliance configured at a client site, set up to allow RD access to a W2003 Terminal Services box on the domain. Haven't deployed it yet as I'm still testing. I have done the usual lockdown stuff, and have ensured that printer redirection is enabled on the server & works, but I'm always nervous about this. There will be a variety of users connecting from a variety of different clients/networks, and although we'll do our best to issue edicts about what kinds of printers will be allowed, I know we'll run into some that simply won't…

Cannot RDP to Win2003 Server after 1st reboot
by Guest eric.dunkelberger@gmail.com- 1 reply

We can RDP to a server, reboot, and after the reboot we can access all network services (NetBIOS views, printing, etc.) except we cannot RDP to the server. Terminal Services are running and no errors list in any of the event logs, but RDP still fails even after letting a server run for several hours. The only way we've been able to get RDP to connect is to reboot the sever a second time, then we can RDP no problem. But if we reboot from RDP again, the process repeats itself. Anyone else experiencing a similar problem with RDP not connecting after a Win2003 reboot? Eric

I'm trying to follow Microsoft article 895433. When I get to the point where I click on Properties of the RDP connection in terminal services, General tab, when I click the edit button to select my certificate, the list is empty. I have installed a requested certificate from my internal CA authority. I have set the pupose of the ceritificate to Server Authentication. The cert. is saved in the computers perona store, I can see it there when I view Certificates in the MMC snap-in. I don't know why my list is empty. PLEASE HELP! I need to have this in place by 3-31-2008. Thanks in advance.

GPO to restrict users from launching updates icon

Hello, Is there a security policy to restrict users from launching the Updates alert icon, or even better prevent them from seeing the icon on the terminal server? A few user are members of the administrator group and sometimes mistake the terminal server Updates alert icon with their client icon. Thanks.
