Change Terminal Server licensing CALs
by Guest Thorny- 1 reply

Hi Guys, I have a customer who has an existing 2000 TS licensed with per device CALs. They have recently purchased a 2003 TS and would like to use per user CALs. The 2003 TS is setup for per user CALs, but I accidently activated and installed 2003 per device CALs. I then rang up again and activated and installed per user CALs, but the per user CALs are showing up as 'not applicable'. Can anyone tell me if there is a way to remove the per Device CALs, as they only want to use 2003 per user CALs. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

OT: UPS WorldShip on 2000 TS?
by Guest Gregg Hill- 1 reply

Hello! If UPS WorldShip is installed as a "LAN Administrative Workstation" on XP Pro and has "Remote Workstations" enabled, then other XP workstations installed as "LAN Remote Workstations" can access the LAN Admin station's UPS database. What I want to do is have the 2000 TS be one of the LAN Remote stations. While UPS claims installing it as a LAN Remote station on a terminal server is officially unsupported and has no documents on it, they told me that some people have successfully installed it as a client on a terminal server. So, is anyone out there knowledgeable about how to have the 2000 TS be one of the LAN Remote stations, and especially, …

Automate Login to TS from RDP
by Guest ponga- 3 replies

Hey gang, I just got tasked to login to 100+ XP boxes via RDP - so I am searching for a way to ease the pain, so far no luck. At first I was looking for a way to make a connectoid that stores the un/pass (they are all the same) - but the XP boxes are set to disallow such a thing in GP. So, my next though was just to find a way that I can Ctrl- V the password in so I don't have to type it everytime, but simply cannot find a way to do it. I've tried so-called keystroke emulators, etc - but nothing works. Any tips would be much appreciated here, Thanks!! -ponga

User Profile hangs
by Guest td- 7 replies

I have a user that when he logs onto our TS 2003 box it hangs at loading your personal settings. He did not have any issues in the past. This has just started happening. I was going to rename his current profile and let him log on and then I would just copy over what he needed from his old profile to the new one but.....when I try to rename the old profile it says Access is denied. Make sure disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not in use. I am assuming that there is a file within this profile that is locked or hung by the system. Is there anyway to unlock it without restarting the server? IS there anyway to see what file is locked in t…

Access Denied (policy_denied): when trying to access the Internetthru IE on Win2k3 TerminalServer? Hello, I administrate various Terminal Servers. On one Server I would need to call on support from the company responsible for a special application. Now it seems that it is impossible to get into the Internet. Instead of getting the proxy authentification dialog window I get a window with the following message: Access Denied (policy_denied) Your system policy has denied access to the requested URL. For assistance, contact your network support team. Is it possible to get around this? Or is it a domain policy where I cannot to anything about it? Or is it st…

We have a Domain controller at a Corporate office that is Windows 2008. In satellite offices we have Windows 2003 TS's the aren't on the domain but part of a workgroup. We need the ability to connect up to 5 users to each satellite TS at a time. We bought 40 WIndows 2008 TS CALS, and are now thinking that we should have bought 8 five packs of Windows 2003 TS Cals instead. Is there any way to effectively and legally use the WIndows 2008 TS Cals for these 8 Windwos 2003 TS's that are remote on their own Workgroups? Can the 2008 DC handle licensing for these satellite workgroups? Is it a license vioation to use the 2008 TS Cals on 2003 TS servers?

Hello, a few days ago, a strange printing issue occured at our site. We have an employee, who works on a WinXP Pro SP2 Workstation with a HP Color LaserJet 2550 attached via USB. She is connected to a Windows Server 2003 via mstsc 6.0.6000. Until the error occured, she could print. But since a few days ago, it is impossible to print from within the terminal session. We reinstalled the drivers, and the printer appears in the session, but it ist even impossible to print a testing site from the printer dialog. The dialog only says, that it is impossible to print. We also tested the registry hack, described in KB302361. Who could help me? Thanks, Andreas

We have our windows 2003 server with just the regular remote administration so administrators can log on and check out the server etc. Every once in a while RDP to this particular server just stops working. when you go into the server there are no obvious errors but the following is true: 1. Terminal Services is started but the option to stop or restart is grayed out 2. RPC service as well is the same issue 3. If you go into the Terminal Service manager and try to reset the RDP-TCP listener you get the following error Session ID (65536) reset Failed Error 5 - Access is denied and yes I am logged on as the domain admin in this case:) This doesnt …

I have been trying to figure this one out for months. I have read an article or two indicating that updating your terminal service to SP2 resets all permissions and file security settings to the default settings. Nonetheless I have given domain users, everyone, remote desktop users all local admin rights on the terminal server as well as full control of the c: drive. I am only able to create shortcuts in users' 'My Document' folder, which users also have full control over, although their 'My Documents' folder location points to their home directory on a different server. Anyway, I have my terminal server users full control on the terminal server but they a…

Event 4105 on licence server
by Guest Sven Vollmann- 2 replies

hello, we use a windows 2008 licence server that is not installed on a dc and use "per user" cals for our 2008 ts farm. on our licence server we see in the eventlog the warning 4105 that means that the licence server cannot update the ad user properties when he delivers the cals. we have discovered that the terminalserver-licenceserver group is under the security properties of the user listed but has no rights. by new created users the rights "terminalserver-licenceserver read" and "terminalserver-licenceserver write" are automatically set for this group. if we set this rights manual the warning disappears in the eventlog. my question now is: how can we…

Outlook 2007 Performance
by Guest Jeff G- 0 replies

All - I have a Terminal Server Cluster that has been built. In my testing, I placed a user that has a large (2.5 GB) Exchange mailbox. When he launches Outlook 2007, it comes up, but he gets an hourglass for about 5 minutes. During that time, he can go on do other things, but when he comes back to Outlook, he gets the "Not Responding" or the white screen. Eventually, it comes back around and he's able to use it. He's not running in cache mode, because of running on TS. All patches have been applied to the servers in the cluster. I've disabled the add-ins that would allow me to. I know that the account size is an issue, but he didn't have the pr…

Hi I am trying to achieve something very specific using RDP. I have 2 windows XP systems. System 1 is currently in a session and System 2 RDPs into System1. This is the simple part. Can I detect from a running application on System 1 that I am about to be logged off because System 2 is requesting a connection. I need to detect it before the session is closed and moved to system 2. I tried all the WTS_SESSION_CHANGE messages and its already too late the system has already been locked or logged off. Thanks for any ideas, Marc -- ....

Start Menu Folder Redirection working - almost
by Guest Sandy Wood- 2 replies

With the great help from these Technet forums, I've gotten my TS folder redirection working to point my users to a cust Start Menu. My only issue now is finding a way to get rid of the Startup folder that gets created when I login with a normal user account. It also adds the test user's account to the ACL list permanently too. Is this expected behaviour? -- Sandy Wood Orange County District Attorney

Hello, Following situation: We have installed a terminal server farm with two terminal servers and a session broker. The problem: We cant open a connection with the RemoteDesktopClient from computers to the farm, which are in the same domain as the farm. The following error occurs: An authentification error occured (Code: 0x80090327) RDC runs normally from computers which are not in the same domain as the farm... We did the following until now: we created a certificate request for our two terminal servers, with the name of the serverfarm: farm1. Our Certification Authority signed it. Creating a custom Start Menu on Win2003 TS
by Guest Sandy Wood- 13 replies

I'm working through creating a custom Start Menu for my Win2003 TS users. I copied some shortcuts to a folder on the TS, on D:\custommenu. I'm looking to create a Group Policy to redirect the Start Menu folders. I've experimented with the various options in Folder Redirection and can't settle on what's suitable for my situation. All my TS users will be using local polices, no roaming. I'd like them to see my custom Start Menu and would like the policy not to apply to Domain Admins. I thought I could apply the Deny options for Admins in the Delegation tab of the policy so Admins would see the default menu. Does this look like it will work? -- Sandy Wood …

Server 2008 TS RemoteApp Maximum Number of Users
by Guest Andy DeAngelis- 2 replies

Good morning. I am currently in the process of developing an infrastructure solution to publish Internet Explorer via RemoteApp to over 600 different locations, averaging around 5 end users per location (for a grand total of 3000 end users). The reason I am doing this is that my client uses a web application that is critical for their day to day business, but only has on average a 128kb frame connection (some connections as low as 56kb dial up!) from the remote locations to the datacenter, with 64kb dedicated to VoIP. This frame connection also is used for email, internet, etc. My thought process is to publish Internet Explorer through TS RemoteApp. …

Folder Redirection of Start Menu on Win 2003 not happening

I've put together a new Win 2003 TS and have just configured Folder Redirection for a Start Menu. On my TS, I created a folder on the D: drive called TSmenu and copied the shortcuts for Word 2007 and Outlook 2007 from the All Users profile. I configured the Start Menu setting as "Basic - Redirect everyone's folder to the same location". The Target folder location is set to "Redirect to the following location" and the Root Path is \\myserver\TSmenu, which is shared with the share defaults. When I login with a test user account, nothing changes, when I click Programs is still see IE, Outlook Express, Remote Assistance, Accessories and Startup. No trace o…

Restrict WAN access

Hi. In my company there’s a Windows 2003 Terminal Server that users access to work every day. W e need to restrict access to LAN only TS for some users and LAN & WAN access to others. I’ve managed to get TS Console to identify the two NICs in the server (LAN and WAN) by duplicating the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\WinStations\RDP-Tcp Key in the registry (renaming each one of them after). This way I can distinct the LAN and WAN connection and set access port (LAN uses default 3389 and WAN uses another port) and color depth etc etc. On the WAN adapter I’ve set only the group who should get access outside the net…

Terminal server Profile folders

When a new user is created we add under terminla server profile in AD the path to the location we store all are users profiles. \\Servername\profiles\username what is happening, when the folder for the user is created it is not inherating permisions from the parent folder. This is not a problem for the domain admins, but we have Help Desk Techs who are a member of a Group and we have added them to the profiles folder with modify permisions, since the folders do not inherat the perminsion we need to go in manually and check this option. I have two questions. 1) is this because the System Account is creating the folder and by design does not check the opti…
